LTMMC DNB Neurology FAQs
Ques. Has the DNB Neurology programme at LTMMC started, and are seats available?
Ans. As per the official LTMMC website, the Department of Neurology is in the process of starting the super-specialty DNB Neurology programme. Candidates are strongly advised to verify the current accreditation status and seat availability on the official NBEMS accreditation portal (accr.natboard.edu.in) and the MCC NEET SS seat matrix before applying. The programme may have limited or no seats in the current cycle.
Ques. What is the difference between DNB Neurology and DM Neurology?
Ans. DM (Doctorate of Medicine) in Neurology is a university degree awarded by MUHS (Maharashtra University of Health Sciences) or other universities, while DNB (Diplomate National Board) in Neurology is awarded by NBEMS. Both are 3-year super-specialty programmes with equivalent clinical training. Both degrees are recognised by NMC and are equivalent for clinical and academic purposes. The DM is filled through NEET SS via state quota counselling, while the DNB is filled through MCC NEET SS counselling.
Ques. What neurology services and facilities are available at LTMMC for trainees?
Ans. The Department of Neurology at LTMMC provides comprehensive neurology OPD, IPD, and referral services at LTMGH, a 1,400+ bed tertiary care hospital. Services include stroke thrombolysis, Botulinum toxin therapy, and electrophysiology. The department has an electrophysiology laboratory with EEG equipment (24-channel portable and 2-channel systems). The hospital's large patient volume ensures exposure to a wide range of neurological conditions including stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, neuromuscular diseases, and demyelinating disorders.
Ques. Do DNB Neurology trainees at LTMMC receive a stipend?
Ans. Yes. All DNB/DrNB super-specialty trainees at LTMMC receive a monthly stipend as per BMC/Maharashtra government norms. The stipend is approximately Rs. 67,000 per month in Year 1, Rs. 67,564 in Year 2, and Rs. 71,247 in Year 3 (as per 2024-25 norms, subject to revision). No tuition fee is charged.
Ques. Is the DNB Neurology degree from LTMMC recognised for academic positions?
Ans. Yes. The DNB (Diplomate National Board) degree awarded by NBEMS is recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC) as equivalent to MD/MS/DM degrees awarded by universities. DNB Neurology holders are eligible for faculty positions, senior residency, and clinical positions across India.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing DNB Neurology from LTMMC?
Ans. DNB Neurology graduates from LTMMC can work as consultant neurologists in government and private hospitals, pursue academic/faculty positions, or set up independent neurology practices. The demand for trained neurologists in India is very high, with a significant shortage of neurologists relative to the population. Starting salaries for consultant neurologists in private hospitals in Mumbai range from Rs. 20-40 lakh per annum, with higher earnings in established practices. Graduates may also pursue fellowship programmes in sub-specialties such as epilepsy, movement disorders, or neurointerventional procedures.
