LTMMC DNB Gastroenterology FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between DNB Gastroenterology and DM Gastroenterology at LTMMC?
Ans. LTMMC offers both DM (Doctorate of Medicine) in Gastroenterology (a university degree awarded by MUHS, Nashik) and DNB (Diplomate National Board) in Gastroenterology (awarded by NBEMS). Both are 3-year super-specialty programmes with equivalent clinical training and the same department. The DM is filled through NEET SS via state quota counselling, while the DNB is filled through MCC NEET SS counselling. Both degrees are recognised by NMC and are equivalent for clinical and academic purposes.
Ques. How many DNB Gastroenterology seats are available at LTMMC?
Ans. LTMMC has a limited number of DNB/DrNB Gastroenterology seats accredited by NBEMS. The exact number of seats may vary each year based on NBEMS accreditation. Candidates should check the official NBEMS accreditation portal (accr.natboard.edu.in) and the MCC NEET SS seat matrix for the current year's seat availability.
Ques. What is the procedural training like for DNB Gastroenterology trainees at LTMMC?
Ans. The Department of Gastroenterology at LTMMC performs over 5,500 endoscopies annually. Trainees get hands-on exposure to diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopies (variceal band ligation, sclerotherapy, achalasia dilatation, stent placement), colonoscopies, therapeutic ERCPs (sphincterotomy, CBD stone extraction, stenting), EUS-guided procedures (pseudocyst drainage, FNA, CBD puncture), capsule endoscopy, Fibroscan, and 24-hour pH monitoring. This volume and variety of procedures is among the best available in any government training centre in Mumbai.
Ques. Do DNB Gastroenterology trainees at LTMMC receive a stipend?
Ans. Yes. All DNB/DrNB super-specialty trainees at LTMMC receive a monthly stipend as per BMC/Maharashtra government norms. The stipend is approximately Rs. 67,000 per month in Year 1, Rs. 67,564 in Year 2, and Rs. 71,247 in Year 3 (as per 2024-25 norms, subject to revision). No tuition fee is charged.
Ques. Is the DNB Gastroenterology degree from LTMMC recognised for academic positions?
Ans. Yes. The DNB (Diplomate National Board) degree awarded by NBEMS is recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC) as equivalent to MD/MS/DM degrees awarded by universities. DNB Gastroenterology holders are eligible for faculty positions, senior residency, and clinical positions across India. NBEMS has also been working towards full equivalence of DNB with university degrees for all purposes.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing DNB Gastroenterology from LTMMC?
Ans. DNB Gastroenterology graduates from LTMMC have excellent career prospects given the department's strong reputation and procedural training. Graduates can work as consultant gastroenterologists in government and private hospitals, pursue academic/faculty positions, or set up independent gastroenterology practices. The demand for trained gastroenterologists in India is high, particularly for those with advanced endoscopy skills (ERCP, EUS). Starting salaries for consultant gastroenterologists in private hospitals in Mumbai range from Rs. 15-30 lakh per annum, with higher earnings in established practices.
