Vivek Pathak, an MBBS program student in the batch of 2024 from Goa Medical College (GMC), posted his experience in a review on March 9, 2025. He liked the wide campus, highly learned faculty, and well-maintained lab facilities where practical sessions are held from time to time.

GMC Goa

However, he also highlighted several disadvantages, including the exorbitant fee structure compared to other government colleges, the absence of a playground, and the low quality of food in the mess, which comes with high charges. Vivek appreciated the robust emphasis on clinical training in the curriculum, as well as the application of Small Group Discussions (SGDs) and Self-Directed Learning (SDLs). He proposed more use of animated video lectures to enhance the interest in theoretical material.

GMC Goa FAQs

Ques. Does GMC Goa have any coaching or preparation assistance for NEET-PG or other competitive exams?

Ans. Though GMC Goa does not organize official coaching classes for NEET-PG, INI-CET, or foreign medical licensing examinations (USMLE, PLAB), it provides a good clinical background and academic environment that allows students to prepare in parallel with their academics. Senior students also organize peer-led study groups, and a few faculty members also provide informal coaching to students who are appearing for postgrad entrance exams. Students also utilize the well-stocked central library as well as e-learning platforms to facilitate their preparation. GMC Goa's academic environment promotes ongoing learning, and hence it is a supportive environment for competitive exam preparation.

Ques. What sort of co-curricular or extracurricular activities are conducted at GMC Goa?

Ans. GMC Goa organizes a number of yearly events such as Synapse (college fest), quiz, sports meet, debate, and cultural activities. The Student Union and interest-based clubs (music, drama, photography, etc.) operate all year around. GMC Goa also supports medical humanities, awareness drives, blood donation camps, and NSS activities. They provide the opportunity for students to relax and develop non-medical skills in addition to their medical education.

Ques. What are the mental health support systems and student well-being at GMC Goa?

Ans. GMC Goa acknowledges the significance of mental well-being, particularly with academic stress in medical school. The Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behavior (IPHB) on the GMC campus is a special mental health hospital. Students are able to avail counseling services confidentially either via IPHB or GMC medical officers. GMC Goa has also initiated stress management, peer support, and mentor-mentee programs as part of student welfare. In addition, year-round events, sports, and cultural activities keep emotional health and community cohesion intact.

Exploring the only medical college in goa

Student view on course curriculum and exams

The curriculum is very vast and sometimes not really reciprocating the future career point of view. More focus on the indian context rather then the Western is needed. Curriculum should be more focused on what the scope of the course is rather then focusing on the wider aspects. And the teaching methods need a lot of improvements, such as the students should be given the top priority and not the syllabus. Giving incomprehensible assignment won't help much rather having interactive sessions and faculties actually taking efforts and making the presentations rather then putting it on the students will really help a lot. Exams are very distored one semester sometimes take more then 6 months and sometimes the semester is rushed within just a month or so. Students have no idea when the college will place their next exams. No regular updates are provided regarding the facilities provided in the college.

Internship opportunity provided by the college and stipend

Internship is provided by the college itself which is within the campus. Students are posted in various department wards and OPDs monthly for a total period of six months. The total stipend is 7,000 rupees. The stipend is very less as compared to other course. It needs significant improvement. I haven't yet done my internship but been hearing experiences from my seniors. It is a bit stressful but a good practical experience is achieved. Simultaneously they also need to work on their thesis.

Total course fees and provided scholarship

There are total 8 semester covering the 4 academic year. For a general category student the total fee per semester rounds up to not more then 20000 rs. So the total cost of the course comes upto 100000 rs. The examination fees per exam costs around not more then 10 thousand rupees. If your are answering supplementary double the amount of the first attempt. If you are applying for challenge evaluation of the results it costs 5,000 rupees per paer which is very costly. Scholarships are available as per cast categories but as mentioned earlier the regular updates are not sent on time. As of not I haven't undertaken any campus employment but after my final year I will be doing my internship which given stipend of 7000 per month which is practically speaking very low as compared to the work done as well as what other courses in the same college receive.

College fests and various activities

I was also a part of the college council and the head of my department. We conducted many events such as hostel opening party in the month of may. Freshers is conducted annually in the month of April Or may. Medicall ball is also a annual tradition which we did in October. We also had the biggest intercollegiate fest of the state named PLEXUS in March. I was also a part of the organizing committee of the GARD -MSN marathon conducted for spreading awareness regarding diabetic foot prevention. Various awareness programs are conducted in the college on a large scale. Speaking about the accessibility of books, the general medical books are available but there is need of increasing the number of books available that are specialised for occupational therapy students. The student run groups such the the college council that is the goa medical college students association and the IMA -MSN college plays a crucial part in engaging students in fun and other academic activities.

Student views on the faculty

The faculties have decent qualifications but apart from few exceptional ones most of them take least efforts to focus on students. More concerned about the academic performance through passive learning rather then students welfare and focusing on active and interesting learning. I feel the faculties are competent enough just need to adopt a different point of view.

Admission process and eligibility criteria

Rhe admission process is through answering NEET UG. Once results are out one needs to apply online to the DTE GOA website and wait for the eligibility list once the eligibility list is out offline rounds are conducted which are notified on the DTE GOA website. Seats are allocated during the offline rounds. A total of 3-4 offline rounds are conducted. Once the seats are allocated the student's need to visit the college and complete the admission process along with the medical fitness test. Reservation of caste categories as well EWS for general category is available. The only scope of improvement in the admission process is the cast reservation as the seats are very less there is no point in having further reservation through cast. The eligible ones if they are competent enough should get the seat easily.

The first college I had applied for is Armed forces medical College(AFMC) but I was declared physically unfit there after that as of my rank I look up upon various parameters of the colleges and finally applied for it. The parameters were - the college should be old (goa medical College is oldest medical College of Asia) - college should be reputed - Academics and facilities should be better etc

I choose this college over other colleges beacause its year of establishment is 1852, but i found that year of establishment doesn't matter in MBBS as much we think. Admission process is too easy. You have to get good score in NEET and from counseling you if you get this college then go to academic section and they will guide you properly.

I wanted to try for armed forced medical college as I wanted to serve the army along with the medicine and other requirements but was not possible as I couldn't score much in neet and I had to settle for whatever I was getting and I was happy with it. If I had studied a boy more I would have been able to get into my dream college Me choosing smgnc was completely my choice as it was nearby and I could travel and be home on time and also manage my other activities and studies as well without loosing on the time I get to enjoy. Our course requires the NEET entrance exam to be cleared and the admission is started once the results are out by filling the form for admission and the rounds are started

Faculty is also very well qualified. To get admission one must clear NEET UG and get a sufficient rank. Admission process is same as any other medical college.
