Canada has introduced a major update to its immigration portal that will let applicants for Permanent Residence (PR) and citizenship track their files in real time — showing how many people are ahead of them and how long they might have to wait. The new feature from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) gives users personalized processing time estimates based on when they applied, not just generic averages like before.

What’s New in the IRCC Tool?
The upgraded IRCC tracker now asks two questions:
- Have you already applied?
- When did you apply?
Based on those inputs, it shows:
- The estimated time remaining for a decision
- The number of applicants ahead in the queue
- The total number of people waiting
For new applicants, it also displays average processing times and the size of the current backlog — a big step toward transparency.

Who Can Use the New Feature?
The update applies to most economic immigration and family sponsorship programs, including:
- Express Entry & Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
- Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) & Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)
- Start-up Visa, Quebec Business Class, and Self-Employed programs
- Spousal sponsorship (inside & outside Canada)
- Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)
- Citizenship grants & certificates
However, it doesn’t yet cover temporary visas, dependent child sponsorships, refugee, or humanitarian applications.
Sample Estimates
As of October 2025:
CEC (Canadian Experience Class) applicant who applied in Jan 2025:
→ Approx. 3,000 people ahead; 17,900 waiting total.
Atlantic Immigration Program:
→ 17 months estimated time left; 6,100 ahead; 13,100 total waiting.
→ New applicants in 2025 may wait about 37 months.
Why It Matters for Indian Applicants?
India remains Canada’s top source of PR applicants, with over 150,000 Indians gaining permanent residency between 2021–2024.
This new tracker will:
- Help Indian families plan better for travel, work, and study timelines
- Offer real-time transparency in processing delays
- Reduce confusion over fluctuating average times shown earlier
Key Takeaways
| Feature | Old System | New System |
|---|---|---|
| Type of info | Average time only | Personalized based on your submission date |
| Queue visibility | None | Shows how many are ahead of you |
| Applicable programs | Limited | Most PR & citizenship streams |
| Transparency | Low | High |
For thousands of Indians waiting on their PR or citizenship decisions, this IRCC upgrade means fewer guesses and more clarity.
While processing times remain long for some streams, the new “personalized tracker” helps applicants know exactly where they stand in line.
