Concerns and Needs in Diverse Contexts Class 11 Notes
Concerns and Needs in Diverse Contexts shows that family well-being is shaped by many linked needs. A person needs nutritious food, health care, clean surroundings, planned time, useful space and suitable clothing. Home Science studies these needs together rather than as isolated topics.
The chapter has three broad parts. Section A explains nutrition, health, hygiene and sanitation. Section B explains availability and management of resources such as time, work energy and space. Section C introduces textile traditions in India through cotton, silk, wool, dyeing, printing and embroidery.

Nutrition Health and Hygiene in Diverse Contexts
Health means physical, mental and social well-being. Primary health care gives first-level support such as immunisation, basic treatment and health education. Secondary and tertiary care provide specialised treatment. Health indicators such as infant mortality, life expectancy, nutrition status and access to sanitation help compare community health.
Nutrition is the process by which the body takes and uses food for growth, energy, repair and protection. Good nutritional status depends on food security, care, health services and a safe environment. Poor nutrition and infection can form a cycle because infection reduces appetite and absorption while undernutrition lowers resistance.
Hygiene includes personal cleanliness, food hygiene and environmental hygiene. Safe water, clean utensils, hand washing, proper cooking, covered storage and clean surroundings reduce food-borne illness. Sanitation is wider than toilet use because it also includes drainage, waste disposal and public cleanliness.
Resource Availability and Management Notes
Time management starts with prompt work, routine, priorities, to-do lists, daily or weekly planners and long-term planners. A peak load period occurs when many duties have to be completed together, such as the morning rush before school. Rest periods must be planned carefully because very long breaks waste time while very short breaks do not reduce fatigue.
Work simplification means completing work with less waste of time and energy while keeping the desired result. It may involve changing body motions, improving the sequence of work, using better tools, keeping items near the place of use, improving posture or changing the end product when possible.
Space management includes planning, organising, implementation and evaluation. Important principles are aspect, prospect, privacy, grouping, roominess, furniture requirements, sanitation, circulation, practical considerations and elegance. A good home plan is useful, clean, comfortable and pleasing to look at.

Textile Traditions in India for Home Science
Textile traditions are part of Indian history and culture. The chapter explains cotton, silk and wool traditions along with dyeing, printing and embroidery. Cotton examples include fine muslin, jamdani and chintz. Silk examples include Varanasi brocade, Baluchar, Ashavali, Kanchipuram and Paithani. Wool examples include pashmina, Jamawar and Kullu shawls.
Resist dyeing is a major Indian textile technique. Tie and dye protects selected parts of fabric before dyeing. Ikat resist dyes the yarn before weaving. Patola, Bandha and Telia Rumals are important examples. Embroidery traditions include Phulkari, Kasuti, Kantha, Kashida, Chikankari, mirror work, applique and Chamba rumals. NCERT treats Saurashtra and Kutch beadwork as a related textile craft, not embroidery.
How to Revise Concerns and Needs in Diverse Contexts
For Section A, revise dimensions of health, levels of care, indicators, nutrients, nutritional problems and hygiene practices. For Section B, revise time planning, peak load, work curve, work simplification and space planning principles. For Section C, revise fibres, regions, techniques and embroidery names with examples.
A strong long answer should include meaning, need, main points, examples and result. Do not write only lists of terms. Add a family or community example wherever possible.
