All figures below reflect verified out-of-state rates and English-taught programmes.

The Top 10 postgraduate options for Indian applicants sit inside the William Howard Dean Graduate School. Each MBA concentration runs 36 credit hours and can be completed in as few as 12 months.

University of North Carolina at Pembroke Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

UNC Pembroke admission requirements for Indian students centre on transcript translation, NACES credential evaluation and English proficiency proof.

Postgraduate (Masters) Requirements:

  • Academic: Bachelor’s degree with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 for MBA (recommended); 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 for MAEd and MAT (recommended)
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 or IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band or Duolingo 105
  • Credential verification: Course-by-course evaluation from a NACES-member service such as WES or ECE
  • GRE or GMAT: Required for MBA and MPA unless undergraduate GPA is above 2.5 on the 4.0 scale

Undergraduate Requirements:

  • Academic: Class 12 with 65% to 70% overall (recommended); nursing and computer science favour the higher band
  • English proficiency: TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, SAT or ACT scores accepted; applicants below UNCP’s cutoff route through the English Language Institute (ELI)
  • Transcripts: English-language translation of official Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets

Key insight: UNCP does not publish a rigid English test cutoff for undergraduates, so borderline scores can still lead to a conditional offer with ELI pre-sessional English. This route is quietly one of the friendliest in the UNC system for Indian applicants below IELTS 6.0.

University of North Carolina at Pembroke Acceptance Rate 2027

UNC Pembroke acceptance rate sits at 89% (estimated) based on latest CollegeData and Niche extracts of federal IPEDS admissions data, placing it among the most accessible public universities in North Carolina. UNCP does not publish an official annual acceptance rate on its admissions page.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
2026 intake cycle89% (estimated)Steady; UNCP applies holistic review
2025 intake cycle92% (estimated)Slight tightening year-on-year

Half of admitted undergraduates who submitted test scores had SAT between 975 and 1180 or ACT between 18 and 22. GPA and Class 12 performance carry the highest weight in UNCP’s holistic review.

Reality check: A high acceptance rate does not remove the need for strong applications. Indian applicants should still target 70% or better in Class 12, since border SAT or ACT scores tilt the file toward conditional English Language Institute placement rather than direct admission.

University of North Carolina at Pembroke Campus, Facilities and Student Life

UNCP occupies a 281-acre campus in Pembroke, a small college town roughly 90 minutes south of Raleigh and 90 minutes east of Charlotte.

  • Location: Rural southeastern North Carolina; nearest airports are Fayetteville (40 minutes) and Charlotte Douglas (100 minutes)
  • Housing: On-campus dorm rate around USD 650 per month; UNCP houses over 3,300 students on or near campus with international priority in placement
  • Facilities: James B Chavis University Center, English Language Institute, Optometric Medicine simulation labs and NCAA Division II athletics across 16 varsity sports
  • Indian community: Small but growing Indian and South Asian student circle, mostly clustered in MBA, Nursing and Computer Science cohorts

What Indian students say: Faculty office hours are easy to book because class sizes stay small under the 18:1 student-faculty ratio. The town itself is quiet, so most social life happens on campus or via short weekend trips to Charlotte and Raleigh for cultural events.

University of North Carolina at Pembroke Scholarships 2027

UNC Pembroke channels most institutional funding through the Brave ASSIST scholarship portal, which requires prior admission and a completed FAFSA. A small number of named awards are open to international students, though most named awards target North Carolina residents.

University of North Carolina at Pembroke Rankings 2027

UNC Pembroke’s strongest ranking sits inside US News, where it holds #18 for social mobility and #33 among Regional Universities South in the 2025-2026 edition. US News groups mid-sized universities offering strong bachelor’s and some master’s programmes by region rather than nationally. UNCP is not currently ranked in global tables such as QS or THE.

UNCP also holds a US News subject rank of #25 in Public Policy (USA) and #24 in Social Work (USA) as per the 2025 subject edition, giving Indian applicants in those tracks a defensible academic signal.

Key insight: UNCP’s absence from global rankings does not affect F-1 visa outcomes or US employer recognition, since the university is a fully accredited UNC system campus. For US-based jobs, employers weigh accreditation and internship record over global ranking.

University of North Carolina at Pembroke Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

UNC Pembroke does not publish a central placement report, but career outcomes cluster around education, healthcare, business services and public administration within North Carolina and the broader south-eastern USA.

  • Employment outlook: UNCP nursing graduates typically place in regional hospital networks including Cape Fear Valley Health and UNC Health; MBA graduates route into finance, healthcare administration and supply chain roles
  • Median starting salary: Not officially disclosed by UNCP; US Bureau of Labor Statistics places entry-level MBA salaries in the North Carolina market at USD 62,000 to USD 78,000 (INR 58.8 to 74.0 lakh) as market median
  • Career support: The Career Center at UNCP runs employer fairs, F-1 STEM OPT workshops and resume clinics through the academic year
  • Post-study work visa: All degrees qualify for 12 months of Optional Practical Training; STEM-designated majors including Computer Science, Biology and Business Analytics qualify for an additional 24 months, taking total OPT to 36 months
  • Alumni signal: Notable alumni include Kelvin Sampson (Houston Cougars head basketball coach) and MLB pitchers River Ryan and Ben Callahan

Insider note: Indian graduates from UNCP most often accept first roles in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park or Charlotte metro rather than relocating. Local networking during the second semester of the master’s programme is the strongest predictor of an OPT-year job offer.

University of North Carolina at Pembroke vs Peer Universities

UNCP is best compared with fellow NC Promise campuses, since the plan caps out-of-state tuition at a flat USD 3,500 per semester and defines a distinct affordable-public tier inside the UNC system.

[Source: UNC System NC Promise page]

UNCP stands out from peer NC Promise campuses on two counts: it is the only one with a US News social mobility ranking inside the top 20 for the Southern region, and it houses the state’s optometric medicine college, an option no other NC Promise sister offers.

UNC Pembroke fits Indian students who want a low-cost US bachelor’s or MBA and value small class sizes over urban placement pipelines. Total four-year investment lands near USD 95,252 (INR 90.4 lakh) all-in, against a market-median MBA salary of USD 62,000 (INR 58.8 lakh), giving one of the strongest ROI ratios in any UNC campus. F-1 students also benefit from the 36-month OPT extension for STEM concentrations inside the MBA.

UNCP is not the right fit for Indian applicants set on top-100 global brand recognition or urban internship density. Those goals point instead to UNC Chapel Hill or NC State, both larger public research universities in the same UNC system with stronger global ranking presence.

University of North Carolina at Pembroke FAQs

Ques. Can international students access the NC Promise tuition rate at UNC Pembroke?

Ans. Yes, international students on F-1 visas qualify for the NC Promise out-of-state tuition rate of USD 3,500 per semester at UNC Pembroke. The plan applies uniformly to all out-of-state undergraduates regardless of nationality. Graduate programmes are not covered by NC Promise, so masters students pay the standard out-of-state per-credit rate, though these still rank among the lowest in the UNC system.

Ques. How long does STEM OPT last after graduation from UNC Pembroke?

Ans. All UNCP graduates qualify for 12 months of standard Optional Practical Training under F-1 rules. Students in STEM-designated majors such as Computer Science, Biology and MBA in Business Analytics qualify for an additional 24-month STEM OPT extension, taking total post-study work eligibility to 36 months. The extension requires E-Verify employer sponsorship and I-983 training plan approval.

Ques. Is a GRE or GMAT required for the MBA at UNC Pembroke?

Ans. The MBA at UNC Pembroke waives the GRE or GMAT requirement if the applicant’s undergraduate GPA sits above 2.5 on the 4.0 scale, which maps to roughly 55% or CGPA 5.5 out of 10 for Indian degrees. Applicants below that threshold must submit valid GRE or GMAT scores taken within the past five years. The MPA programme follows a similar waiver rule at the 3.0 GPA level.

Ques. What financial documentation must Indian applicants submit for an F-1 visa at UNCP?

Ans. UNCP requires a completed Certificate of Financial Responsibility form plus bank statements showing at least USD 25,000 to USD 30,000 in liquid funds to cover the first year of study. Documents must be dated within six months of the visa interview. Sponsor letters, education loan sanction letters and fixed deposit certificates are all accepted, and the I-20 is issued only after cleared documentation.

Ques. Which credential evaluation services does UNC Pembroke accept for Indian transcripts?

Ans. UNC Pembroke accepts course-by-course credential evaluations from any NACES-member service. The most widely used services for Indian applicants are World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) and Educational Perspectives. Applicants should order the evaluation at least 8 to 10 weeks before the application deadline, since Indian transcript verification with the issuing university can add processing time.

Ques. Can Indian F-1 students work part-time on campus at UNCP?

Ans. Yes, F-1 students may work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during term time and full-time during official breaks. On-campus jobs at UNCP include library assistant, dining services, research assistantships and ELI tutoring. Off-campus work is not permitted in the first academic year unless the student qualifies for economic hardship authorisation or Curricular Practical Training tied to a specific course.

Ques. Does UNC Pembroke offer conditional admission through its English Language Institute?

Ans. Yes, UNCP offers conditional admission through the English Language Institute (ELI) for applicants who do not meet the direct English proficiency cutoff. Students take intensive English coursework at ELI, then matriculate to academic classes upon successful programme completion. This pathway benefits Indian applicants sitting at IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 65 who still meet the academic bar for their target degree.

Ques. What is the application fee for international applicants at UNC Pembroke?

Ans. UNC Pembroke charges a non-refundable application fee that applies to all applicants including international students. The fee is paid online through the MyUNCP application portal by credit card. Fee waivers are limited and applicants should confirm the current amount and any waiver eligibility directly with the Office of Global Engagement before submitting the online application.

Overview

UNCP is a school that is close to home which is great because I didn't want to be far. As as far as costs go it is an affordable college to go to especially with the $500 tuition they have. Also, I am the fourth generation in my family to go to UNCP. It started with my great grandmother, then my grandma, my father, and now me. I am happy to continue that tradition at UNCP.

Fees

UNCP has a charge for insurance which can be waived if you have your own/ on the family insurance plan. In the first semester, there are lectures from the history of UNCP to sexual assault and consent which they will charge for.
