Montclair State University Eligibility for Indian Students
Eligibility at Montclair State runs on two tracks: academic thresholds and English proficiency. The academic bar is set by the credential — Class XII for freshman and a completed Bachelor’s for graduate — while English scores are set separately per level. Montclair accepts Indian applicants from 3-year Bachelor’s programs for many master’s tracks but expects an accredited course-by-course evaluation to confirm equivalence.
- UG general entry: Completed Class XII from a recognised Indian board with a solid academic record; SAT or ACT is optional.
- PG general entry: A completed Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, or final-semester enrollment at the time of applying.
- MS Computer Science: Minimum 3.0 GPA (roughly 60 percent in Indian marks) and prerequisite coursework in programming, data structures, and discrete math.
- MS Data Science: 15 undergraduate credits in Computer Science including programming, data structures, computer organization, and discrete math.
- MBA: Bachelor’s in any discipline. GMAT or GRE is not required; both are waived by default for candidates with a 3.0 GPA and two years of relevant work experience.

Montclair State IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
Montclair State does not accept a plain Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from an Indian university as a standalone English waiver. However, the waiver applies in three specific situations that Indian applicants may qualify for: completion of one academic year (two semesters or three quarters) of full-time enrollment at a US-accredited institution, prior study in a country on Montclair’s approved English-speaking list, or completion of 24+ college credits in the US or an exempt country. IB Diploma and Cambridge A-Level graduates at the UG level are also considered exempt.
Insider note: Indian applicants whose Bachelor’s was taught in English but who did not complete a full year of study abroad should plan to take IELTS or Duolingo. Duolingo is the cheapest route at roughly USD 65 (around INR 6,218) with results in two days and is accepted at both UG (95) and PG (105) levels.
Montclair State PG Programs and English Scores

Montclair State MBA Admissions at Feliciano School
The Feliciano School of Business runs the Montclair State MBA in three delivery formats — full-time, hybrid weeknight, and fully online — allowing Indian applicants to pick a track that fits their work status and F-1 requirements. The core degree is 36 credits and can be completed in as few as 21 months. Concentrations include Finance, Marketing, Accounting, International Business, and General Management.
Feliciano MBA GMAT Waiver Policy
The GMAT and GRE are not required for MBA admission. Both are waived by default for applicants who hold a 3.0 undergraduate GPA and at least two years of full-time work experience. Applicants who fall short of either can still request a waiver by submitting the standardized test waiver form with supporting evidence (CFA, CA, senior work role, quantitative degree).
Feliciano MBA Format and Interview Stage
The full-time MBA is open to fresh graduates and career switchers on F-1 visas. The hybrid weeknight and online tracks are used mostly by working professionals in the New York metro area and are not F-1 eligible for Indian students studying from India. Feliciano may invite shortlisted candidates for a brief admissions interview by video, focused on career goals and fit — this is not a case-based assessment.
Reality check: The full-time Feliciano MBA is the only format that supports an F-1 study visa. If you are applying from India, target the full-time track and confirm your I-20 timeline with the Office of Global Engagement.
Montclair State University Doctoral Admissions
Montclair State offers PhD and EdD programs through the College of Education and Human Services, College of Science and Mathematics, and School of Communication and Media. The doctoral tuition and fees estimate for 2026-27 international students is USD 15,750 per year (around INR 15.07 Lakhs), significantly lower than master’s level because full-time doctoral students typically enroll in fewer credits per term.
MSU PhD Application Requirements
Applicants need a completed Master’s degree from an accredited institution, a research statement aligned with a Montclair faculty member’s ongoing work, two to three academic letters of recommendation, and a strong academic transcript. GRE requirements vary by program — some accept a waiver, others require it. English minimums match the graduate floor (IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 83).
Montclair Doctoral Funding for Indian Students
Doctoral applicants are eligible for graduate assistantships that combine a stipend with tuition remission. Amounts, terms, and coverage vary by department and academic year — the 2026-27 stipend levels are published on each department’s funding page. See the university’s ranking band for research strengths to help identify well-funded departments.
Montclair State University Application Process Step by Step
The application process differs by level. Freshman applicants have two portal choices; graduate applicants use one. All Indian applicants must complete a credit evaluation before or shortly after applying.
- Choose your portal. UG freshmen can use the Common Application (which opened on 31 July 2026 for the 2026-27 cycle) or Montclair’s own apply.montclair.edu portal. Graduate applicants must use graduate.montclair.edu/apply. Transfer UG applicants use apply.montclair.edu only.
- Pay the application fee of USD 65 for UG (around INR 6,218) or USD 60 for PG (around INR 5,740) on the same portal. This is a non-refundable application fee.
- Order a WES or ECE course-by-course evaluation of your Indian transcripts. This takes 20 to 30 business days and costs around USD 205 (around INR 19,610).
- Upload the English test score (IELTS, TOEFL iBT, Duolingo, PTE, or iTEP) directly from the testing agency to Montclair’s institution code.
- Submit supporting documents — SOP, LORs, resume, financial documentation showing at least USD 47,298 for master’s applicants (around INR 45.24 Lakhs) or USD 56,392 for UG (around INR 53.94 Lakhs) — see the Documents section.
- Track your status on the applicant portal after submission. Freshman decisions issue within 3 to 6 weeks; graduate decisions vary by program.
- Accept your offer and file for the I-20 before 15 June 2027 for Fall 2027 entry, so the Office of Global Engagement can issue your F-1 documents in time for the visa interview.

Montclair State University Acceptance Rate
Montclair State is one of the more accessible public research universities in the New York metro area. Its institutional acceptance rate sits at around 87%, meaning most applicants who meet the stated academic and English thresholds are admitted.
Why the Rate is High
Montclair State is a public university with a mission to serve New Jersey residents and offer a broad transfer pathway. High acceptance does not mean low quality — the university is ranked #1 public institution in New Jersey for social mobility and #158 nationally per US News 2026. It means the admissions floor is enforceable rather than competitive: hit the threshold and you are in.
Where Selectivity Rises
Nursing, Musical Theatre, Dance, and select MFA tracks are competitive with fixed cohort caps. The Feliciano MBA and MS Computer Science are less selective by rate but do enforce the GPA and prerequisite floors — a 55 percent Bachelor’s average is unlikely to clear the 3.0 GPA equivalent. See student experience insights from Indian students already at Montclair for real-world admissions patterns.
Insider note: An 87 percent acceptance rate does not mean guaranteed admission — Montclair rejects incomplete files by default. Missing an evaluation, missing an English score, or an SOP that ignores the program’s stated goals will land you in the reject pile even with strong academics.
USA Student Visa Process for Montclair State University
Indian students admitted to Montclair State apply for the F-1 student visa, the standard US route for degree-seeking international students. The process starts after your I-20 arrives from the Office of Global Engagement.
Pay the USD 350 SEVIS I-901 fee (around INR 33,481) at fmjfee.com, then pay the USD 185 visa application fee (around INR 17,697) and book an appointment at the US Embassy in New Delhi or a Consulate in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, or Kolkata. Complete Form DS-160 online, print the confirmation page, and attend the visa interview with your I-20, financial documents (bank statements, sponsor affidavit, loan letters), academic transcripts, and admission letter. Interview officers ask about your choice of Montclair, funding, and post-degree intent.
2026 update: Visa slot availability in India can tighten between April and July. Book your F-1 slot within a week of receiving your I-20 to avoid missing the primary intake in Fall 2027.
Tips and Application Checklist for Montclair State University
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Montclair State and the university’s own applicant handbook.
- Apply early in the rolling cycle: Files completed between August and December get faster decisions and first pick on assistantships and merit scholarships.
- Order your WES evaluation 8 weeks before your target deadline: Evaluations take 20 to 30 business days, and Montclair does not review incomplete files.
- Take Duolingo if you are time-pressed: Results in two days at USD 65 (around INR 6,218) and accepted at both UG (95) and PG (105) levels.
- Write program-specific SOPs: A generic statement fails at MS Computer Science, MBA, and Clinical Psychology tracks — name a faculty member or course.
- Prepare financial proof in the exact format Montclair specifies: Bank statement dated within 3 months, matching the USD 47,298 master’s or USD 56,392 UG floor.
- Book your F-1 visa slot the day your I-20 arrives: Delhi and Mumbai fill fast between April and July.
- Complete SEVIS I-901 payment before the interview: USD 350 (around INR 33,481) via fmjfee.com; carry the receipt.
- Confirm English waiver eligibility with Global Engagement in writing: A verbal or emailed "you probably qualify" is not enforceable at the visa stage.

- Montclair and the surrounding area is on the pricey end of New Jersey and commuting from other places like Jersey city or Edison cost a bit, and the accomodation provided is good, but it is also costly

Overview
My girlfriend recommended it to me for their psychology program. And since it's a state college, the tuition was not as expensive compared to out of state colleges. The distance also played a role, it is not far from my home. There is even a bus that goes there from port authority in New York. Being a commuter, this played a big role into choosing this college.
Scholarship
Yes, I have received financial aid. It's pretty simple all a student would have to do is fill out the FAFSA form and send that to the university.
