University of Nebraska - Kearney Acceptance Rate 2027
UNK is a moderately open-admission public university with an official acceptance rate of 88% in Fall 2023, the most recent full-cohort figure US News reports. Recent Common Data Set entries have held in the same band, and Indian applicants who clear grade and language thresholds see decisions inside three to four weeks of a completed file.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| Fall 2023 | 88% | Stable |
| Fall 2022 | 88% | Stable |
The high acceptance rate reflects UNK’s regional access mission, not a lower entry bar; applicants still meet the published academic and English minimums.
Reality check: The 88% acceptance rate makes UNK a strong safety option for Indian applicants targeting the US Midwest, but visa officers still assess academic fit and financial readiness on the same F-1 rubric used at more selective schools.

University of Nebraska - Kearney Campus, Facilities and Student Life
UNK sits on a 235-acre residential campus in Kearney, a small central Nebraska city on Interstate 80, roughly three hours west of Omaha by road.
- Location and transport: Kearney Regional Airport connects to Denver daily, with Omaha’s Eppley Airfield serving as the main international gateway
- Housing: On-campus residence halls guaranteed for first-year international students at USD 12,294 (INR 11.62 lakh) per year including meal plan
- Facilities: Frank House Museum, Health and Sports Center, Nebraskan Student Union, and a 24-hour academic support hub in the Calvin T Ryan Library
- International community: 300+ international students from 50 countries, with the International Friendship Program pairing new arrivals with local host families
What Indian students say: Kearney’s low-cost living and tight-knit academic support get flagged repeatedly, alongside the small class sizes that make faculty office hours easy to book. The main trade-off cited is limited public transport, so a shared car or a bike is the standard workaround.
University of Nebraska - Kearney Scholarships 2027
UNK offers three confirmed scholarships for international undergraduates, led by an automatic tuition waiver applied to every eligible Indian applicant.
| Scholarship | Type | Award Value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| International Loper Tuition Waiver | Tuition waiver | USD 4,797/year (INR 4.53 lakh) | First-time freshmen, transfer, and re-enrolling international UG; 2.5 GPA renewal | Automatic at admission |
| Kearney Noon Rotary International Scholarship | Merit | Varies | Current or incoming international UG; preference for humanitarian careers | Verify at official page |
| Helen and Barney Wood Nepalese Scholarship | Country-specific | Varies | Nepalese citizens, full-time UG, minimum 3.0 GPA | 1 December to 1 February (Nepalese applicants) |
[Source: UNK Global International Scholarships page, 2026]
Planning note: The International Loper Tuition Waiver applies automatically on admission, so Indian applicants do not fill a separate form. The 2.5 GPA renewal condition is generous by US public university standards, and 80% of UNK undergraduates receive some form of scholarship or aid.

UNK does not appear in the QS World, THE World, or ARWU global tables, which weigh research output that UNK does not chase as a teaching-focused regional university. The upward US News trajectory (#33 in 2024 to #24 in 2026) reflects gains on retention, graduation, and social mobility measures.
Key insight: For Indian applicants, the US News regional rank matters less than F-1 visa eligibility, and every US News-ranked accredited public university clears the SEVP bar. UNK’s #6 Best Value position is the more actionable signal for a cost-conscious Indian family.

University of Nebraska - Kearney Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
UNK bachelor’s graduates report solid early-career earnings for a low-cost Midwest public, with the College of Business and Technology and the College of Education driving the strongest hiring outcomes.
- Bachelor’s median early-career salary: USD 45,000 (INR 42.5 lakh), rising to USD 52,000 (INR 49.1 lakh) at ten years
- Top-paying undergraduate major: Business Administration and Management at USD 44,100 (INR 41.7 lakh) starting
- Master’s in Education median starting salary: USD 55,000 (INR 51.98 lakh); Educational Administration graduates lead at USD 57,300 (INR 54.15 lakh)
- Employer sectors: Regional healthcare systems, K-12 school districts, agribusiness firms, and financial services across Nebraska and the wider Midwest
- Post-study work: F-1 visa holders access 12 months of Optional Practical Training, extended by 24 months for eligible STEM majors under US ICE rules
Insider note: UNK’s placements skew regional, and Indian graduates targeting metropolitan tech markets typically transfer to larger firms after a first US job. The MBA cohort reports 70% of students already employed at enrolment, so the ROI conversation is about wage growth, not first placement.
University of Nebraska - Kearney vs Peer Universities
The peer set below reflects other US Midwest regional universities Indian students weigh alongside UNK on cost, admit rate, and Business or Education programmes.
| University | US News Regional Midwest 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD) | Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Nebraska - Kearney | #24 overall, #8 public | 16,000 to 20,000 | 15.12 to 18.90 lakh | Lowest cost, automatic Loper waiver |
| University of Missouri, Kansas City | National tier (unranked regional) | 26,000 to 28,000 | 24.57 to 26.46 lakh | Health sciences and Bloch MBA depth |
| Northwest Missouri State University | #71 overall | 13,000 to 15,000 | 12.29 to 14.18 lakh | Textbook rental included in tuition |
| Western Illinois University | #95 overall | 15,000 to 17,000 | 14.18 to 16.07 lakh | Actuarial science strength |
| Saint Cloud State University | #69 overall | 17,000 to 19,000 | 16.07 to 17.96 lakh | Aviation and CS breadth |
UNK stands out on total cost of attendance, the automatic International Loper Waiver, and its stable top-ten public regional placement. The trade-off is a smaller international cohort and a rural setting that suits students who value low expenses and small class sizes over metro exposure.
University of Nebraska - Kearney fits Indian applicants seeking an affordable US public with strong Education, Business, and Biology programmes. Total four-year investment lands near INR 1.15 crore before the Loper waiver, matched against a bachelor’s early-career median of INR 42.5 lakh and STEM OPT of up to 36 months for eligible majors under the US visa framework.
UNK is not the pick for applicants set on Ivy-tier brand equity, large metropolitan recruiting, or heavy research output. Those applicants should consider USA universities like Purdue University or Ohio State University, which trade UNK’s cost advantage for scale and QS-ranked visibility.
University of Nebraska - Kearney FAQs
Ques. What is the acceptance rate at University of Nebraska - Kearney?
Ans. UNK reports an official acceptance rate of 88% for Fall 2023 in the US News Common Data Set. The rate reflects the university’s regional access mission and has held stable across recent cycles. Indian applicants who meet the published academic minimums (Class 12 at 65% or bachelor’s at 55%) plus the English proficiency thresholds routinely secure decisions inside three to four weeks of a completed application.
Ques. Does UNK require GRE or GMAT scores for Indian applicants?
Ans. UNK does not require GRE or GMAT scores for most graduate programmes, including the MBA and the MEd tracks. Indian applicants submit a bachelor’s degree with a course-by-course WES or ECE evaluation, a TOEFL iBT 79 or IELTS 6.5, and a financial affidavit. Some department-specific programmes may still request test scores, so applicants verify at the graduate programme page they target.
Ques. How much is the UNK application fee for Indian students?
Ans. The UNK undergraduate and transfer application fee is USD 45 (INR 4,253) for international students, paid online at submission. The English Language Institute (ELI) route carries a separate USD 50 placement fee. Application-fee waivers are not commonly issued to Indian applicants, and the fee is non-refundable regardless of admission outcome.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time at University of Nebraska - Kearney?
Ans. Yes, F-1 visa holders at UNK can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during the academic year and full-time during breaks. On-campus roles include library assistant, dining services, and departmental research jobs. Off-campus employment is restricted and requires Curricular Practical Training (CPT) authorisation tied to an academic programme requirement.
Ques. What is the STEM OPT extension for UNK graduates?
Ans. UNK graduates from qualifying STEM programmes (Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, and select Business Analytics tracks) qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension on top of the standard 12-month OPT. This gives up to 36 months of post-study work in the USA. Non-STEM graduates from MBA or MEd programmes get the standard 12-month OPT window only.
Ques. Are Indian education loans accepted for University of Nebraska - Kearney?
Ans. Yes, UNK is recognised by major Indian education loan providers including HDFC Credila, Avanse, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, and Bank of Baroda. Ques. Does UNK offer online masters programmes accessible from India?
Ans. UNK offers online graduate tracks in Education, Business, and Speech-Language Pathology at a discounted non-resident rate of USD 591 per credit hour. However, 100% online programmes do not satisfy F-1 visa requirements, so Indian students studying fully online do so from India without a US immigration status. Hybrid formats are the option for applicants who want the campus experience and OPT eligibility.
Ques. How long does the UNK admission decision take for Indian applicants?
Ans. UNK typically issues admission decisions within three to four weeks of receiving a completed application, transcripts, English test scores, and financial affidavit. Fast tracks depend on document completeness. The I-20 issue follows within seven to ten business days of confirmed admission and receipt of the financial affidavit, giving Indian applicants sufficient time for the F-1 visa interview at their nearest US Consulate.

Overview
Firstly, I transferred to this because I had my friends there and also had the major I was wanting to study. I saw that I had a chance to build my resume and make myself a better person in this college which is the reason I chose this one. Besides, all of these reasons the whole college community and faculty members are very helpful and want to see you moving forward. The international student department here is a gem, they have to help me in every single step since I came to UNK. Most importantly, I got attracted to this college due to its opportunities for on-campus jobs and involvement in various organizations for students of any kind.
Fees
The international students get an international student scholarship which increases each year by about 500 dollars of you keep maintaining your GPA to 3 each semester. Besides that, we get a chance to apply for other outer scholarships according to our majors. Also each year continuing student scholarship is awarded to a lot of students. Sometimes you also get a scholarship from your workplace. The primary thing to do to get a scholarship is to maintain your GPA to 3.0 or more.
Overview
UNK is affordable and with the scholarship, I was awarded it seemed like the obvious choice. It is close to my hometown and the environment is very welcoming. There are many resources on and off-campus to make sure students can succeed.
Fees
The scholarship I was given covers all fees that most students have to pay, however, I looked at the fees that all students pay and not only are they affordable but they are also easy to understand.
Overview
It is close to my home town so when I want to go home it only takes me two hours. They have a good exercise science program. The faculty to student ratio is small so you get a lot of personal attention.
Fees
There are several fees that must be paid in your tuition. Stuff like campus rev, technology, library, tutoring, etc. and they are paid with your semester tuition bill.
Overview
I chose it because it wasn't too far away from my home town. I also liked that it was a fairly small college with big opportunities. Kearney is a great community because it's safe and clean. I also chose UNK because they have a really good program for nursing. I received a lot of scholarships, so going to UNK basically is free for me. I love the campus and feel so connected.
Fees
The structure of the feed was set up on an online website. It listed them all out clearly and was easy to pay. Charges include tuition, room and board, lab fees, gym fees, library fees, parking fees, and book fees.
