Sam Houston State University admission requirements for Indian applicants center on academic transcripts, English proficiency and credential verification.

- Standardised tests: GRE required for MS Statistics and MS Computer Science; GMAT waived for MBA case-by-case
Undergraduate Requirements

- SAT or ACT: Optional but recommended for competitive admission; middle 50% SAT band is 960 to 1140

Sam Houston State University Acceptance Rate 2027
Sam Houston State University has an overall acceptance rate of 85% (estimated), placing it in the accessible tier for international applicants. Reported figures range from 79% to 90% across published sources, and the university does not publish a separate India-specific admit rate.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 85% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2025 | 85% (estimated) | Stable |
The rate applies to freshman undergraduate applicants. Graduate admission is programme-specific, with competitive tracks like MS Statistics and MBA using academic credentials, GRE or GMAT scores, and statements of purpose.
Reality check: A high headline acceptance rate does not guarantee a graduate seat. Indian applicants for MS in Computer Science, Statistics or Digital Forensics still face programme-level scrutiny on GPA, GRE and prior research or work experience.

- Career support: On-campus career fairs each semester; STEM MS graduates get 24-month OPT extensions; compare Texas outcomes with peer MBA universities in USA
Insider note: SHSU’s Criminal Justice graduates have a strong federal and state pipeline, but placement outside criminal justice or education relies heavily on independent applications through Houston-based recruiter networks.
Sam Houston State University vs Peer Universities
The peer set below groups Texas public regional universities that Indian applicants often shortlist alongside SHSU on cost and admission accessibility.
| University | QS World Rank 2027 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD) | Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sam Houston State University | Not ranked | 21,474 | 20.51 lakh | Nationally recognised Criminal Justice programmes |

| Stephen F. Austin State University | Not ranked | 19,000 (estimated) | 18.15 lakh (estimated) | Lower tuition; forestry and agriculture strength |
| Lamar University | Not ranked | 20,000 (estimated) | 19.10 lakh (estimated) | Engineering focus; larger online catalogue |
SHSU stands out on Criminal Justice, MBA affordability and its 3-intake calendar. Applicants seeking a QS-ranked Texas public should also consider the University of North Texas.
Sam Houston State University suits Indian students who want an affordable, English-taught US master’s, with a total investment of INR 44.23 to 57.15 lakh over 2 years against a Texas median starting salary of USD 55,000. The strongest India-specific advantage is the 3-intake calendar paired with STEM-eligible MS tracks that unlock a 24-month OPT extension via the F-1 student visa route.
SHSU is not the fit for applicants who need a top-500 global brand for recruiter recognition or scholarship funding closer to a full ride. Those students should benchmark against the University of North Texas, which sits inside the QS World rankings with a similar Texas tuition profile.
Sam Houston State University FAQs
Ques. Can Indian applicants apply to SHSU without a GRE or GMAT score?
Ans. Yes, several Sam Houston State University master’s programmes waive GRE or GMAT case-by-case. The MBA routinely waives GMAT for applicants with strong undergraduate GPAs (above 3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or three or more years of managerial work experience. MS Statistics and MS Computer Science still typically require GRE. Always check the programme page before assuming a waiver, and be prepared to submit supplementary materials.
Ques. What English proficiency waivers does Sam Houston State University accept?
Ans. SHSU waives TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo requirements for Indian applicants who completed their bachelor’s degree entirely in English. Submit an official letter from the previous institution on university letterhead, signed by the registrar, confirming English as the medium of instruction across all years. Class 12 English-medium alone does not qualify. Some programmes still request test scores despite the waiver, so verify with the graduate coordinator.
Ques. How much is the SHSU international application fee and can it be waived?
Ans. The application fee is USD 90 for both undergraduate and graduate international applicants at Sam Houston State University. Fee waivers are rare and generally offered only through recruitment fairs or partner-university MOUs. Indian applicants attending EducationUSA fairs or advised through official channels can occasionally request a waiver code. Otherwise, the fee is payable via credit card during online submission.
Ques. Does Sam Houston State University allow international students to work part-time on campus?
Ans. Yes, F-1 visa holders at SHSU can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic year and full-time during official breaks. Common roles include library assistants, dining services, teaching assistantships and research assistantships. Off-campus work requires either Curricular Practical Training (CPT) tied to coursework or Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation. Both require Designated School Official (DSO) authorisation before starting.
Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for SHSU admissions?
Ans. Sam Houston State University is recognised by major Indian public and private banks for education loans. State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and IDBI Bank sanction loans up to INR 60 lakh for SHSU with collateral, and up to INR 40 lakh without collateral for eligible programmes. NBFCs like Avanse and Auxilo also lend for SHSU. Present the I-20, admission letter and cost breakdown when applying.
Ques. How long does OPT last at Sam Houston State University for STEM master’s programmes?
Ans. STEM-designated master’s programmes at SHSU (including MS Digital Forensics, MS Computer Science, MS Data Analytics and MS Statistics) qualify for the 24-month OPT STEM extension on top of the standard 12-month OPT. Total post-study work authorisation reaches 36 months. The extension requires E-Verify employer sponsorship and continued programme relevance. Non-STEM master’s (MBA, MEd) get the standard 12-month OPT only.
Ques. What documents are required for WES credential evaluation for Sam Houston State University?
Ans. Indian applicants must submit official transcripts and degree certificates directly from their previous institution to WES Canada or WES USA. SHSU accepts the WES ICAP (course-by-course with GPA calculation) evaluation, which is the most detailed option. Processing takes 7 to 20 business days after WES receives all documents. Start the WES process at least 8 weeks before the SHSU application deadline to avoid last-minute delays.
Ques. What is the SHSU refund policy for students who withdraw before term start?
Ans. Sam Houston State University refunds 100% of tuition and mandatory fees if a student withdraws before the official first day of classes. Refunds drop to 80% during the first five class days, 70% during days six to ten, and 50% during days eleven to fifteen. No refund is issued after the 15th class day. Housing and meal plans follow separate proration schedules; contact Student Account Services within the withdrawal window.

- I love that they have various daily events for students to stay engaged. I know for some it’s hard, the transition from high school or transition into a new state/country. Many students feel alone so it’s nice to be included in things that are free even if you don’t have any friends yet.
Dislikes
- The only thing I dislike about the campus is that there are some hills and a few tutors who aren’t helpful (very few) but you can always go to a different tutor if you don’t like the one you met with.
Overview
I chose this university as it is close enough to home where I can still visit and I received a full ride (Smith-Hutson). It is a small town but not empty. The campus is outside the suburbs with so much nature. I had no idea what to expect. Being here has shown me my potential in the world and taught me what I do matters. There are so many students and different people you can interact with and meet. Every day is a new opportunity to network in your future career and to learn about yourself/studies. I am so excited to start my second year and see what these semesters have in store with me. I can’t wait to make more friends and dive deeper into my programs.
Campus Life
There is always something every day to do on campus. They are welcome events for the first month. Many many events in our plaza throughout the year (especially regarding abroad students and cultural events). We have a ton of sports (intramural and club). Our programs also have their own clubs. A recreational centre with a nice pool. The library is insane! It’s huge and has four floors. A great place to get your work done, get tutoring assistance (I go frequently), or grab a cup of coffee as there is a Starbucks inside. The Lowman Student Center, we call it the LSC, is where you can grab CFA, Subway, Panda Express, and so many more food spots. They also have a game room called the Kat klub where you can bowl, play video games, and come to the watch parties for our football games.
Overview
I decided to go to Sam Houston State University for various reasons. One reason was cost because the tuition price is fairly low. Another reason was the location. The school is located in Texas and I am from Texas, so it made sense to go there.
Fees
The fee structure is itemized clearly in the student account. It is broken down from tuition, room and board, meal plans, and various other student costs. There are health services and rec costs, but they are fairly low for the services you receive in return.
