Colorado School of Mines Scholarships for UG Students
Mines runs two central undergraduate merit awards for international applicants plus departmental awards through individual programmes. No need-based financial aid is offered to international students at the UG level.
| Scholarship | Value | Eligibility | Deadline | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| International First-Year Admissions Merit Award | Up to $8,000 (INR 7.56 Lakhs) per year, renewable up to 4 years | Incoming international first-year applicant, competitive academic record on the Mines admission review | Priority: November 1, 2026 for Fall 2027 entry; Regular: January 15, 2027 | Automatic on admission review |
| International Student Merit Scholarship | $3,000 to $15,000 (INR 2.84 to 14.18 Lakhs) per year | Continuing international undergraduate with strong academic performance at Mines | Considered annually at end of academic year | Automatic on continuing enrolment review |
| Departmental Merit Awards | Varies by programme, typically $1,000 to $5,000 (INR 0.95 to 4.73 Lakhs) per year | Enrolled UG in Petroleum, Mining, Chemical, Electrical or Computer Science tracks | Rolling; departmental review after first academic year | Nomination by department after coursework completion |
The First-Year Merit Award applies to year one and renews for the following three years subject to Mines GPA thresholds. An Indian UG applicant on a four-year BSc saves roughly $32,000 (INR 30.24 Lakhs) across the degree if the renewal continues at maximum value.
Best-fit UG programmes for the auto-award include BSc Petroleum Engineering, BSc Mining Engineering, BSc Computer Science and BSc Chemical Engineering. All figures are anchored to the 2026-27 non-resident tuition rate of $44,790 (INR 42.33 Lakhs) plus $3,206 (INR 3.03 Lakhs) in mandatory fees.
Applicants targeting the priority deadline of November 1, 2026 sit in the strongest band for the top merit tier. Regular-round admits still qualify but see lower average award values from the Mines admission committee.
For programme-level fee breakdowns and the current UG intake calendar, check the Colorado School of Mines overview before the November priority date.
Colorado School of Mines Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students
Postgraduate funding at Mines runs primarily through assistantships tied to research groups. Master’s students in thesis-track programmes are the strongest candidates for tuition-plus-stipend packages.
| Scholarship | Value | Eligibility | Deadline | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) | Full tuition waiver plus $22,000 to $28,000 (INR 20.79 to 26.46 Lakhs) annual stipend | Admitted PG applicant in thesis-track master’s, strong UG record, faculty sponsor | Tentative March 1, 2027 for Fall 2027 intake (aligned with admission deadline) | Departmental nomination after PG admission |
| Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) | Full tuition waiver plus $24,000 to $32,000 (INR 22.68 to 30.24 Lakhs) annual stipend | Admitted PG applicant matched to a funded research project, strong technical background | Tentative March 1, 2027 for Fall 2027 intake | Direct outreach to potential faculty supervisor before admission |
| Departmental Fellowships | Up to $10,000 (INR 9.45 Lakhs) per year, non-service award | Top-ranked PG admits in Mining, Petroleum, Geophysics, Applied Mathematics or Materials Science | Tentative February 15, 2027 for Fall 2027 intake | Automatic on admission for shortlisted candidates |
Standard non-resident PG tuition sits near $42,840 (INR 40.48 Lakhs) per year. A funded GRA covers that tuition in full and pays a stipend on top.
Net cash cost for an Indian master’s admit then drops to living expenses and mandatory fees. Golden area living costs work out to roughly $23,450 (INR 22.16 Lakhs) for the 9-month academic year.
Priority PG programmes for assistantship funding include:
- MS Petroleum Engineering (thesis track) with strong industry sponsor pipeline
- MS Mining Engineering (thesis track) tied to Mines QS Rank 1 subject strength
- MS Computer Science with faculty-linked research groups
- MS Materials Science, Geophysics and Applied Mathematics for research fellowships
Reddit Insight: Indian applicants report GRA offers land after emailing 8 to 12 potential advisors with a project fit pitch. This usually happens 6 to 8 weeks before the March 1 deadline, and cold portal submissions without a supervisor conversation rarely convert.
For assistantship-linked admission dates and TOEFL score thresholds, review the Colorado School of Mines admissions page.
India-Specific Scholarships at Colorado School of Mines
Mines does not run an India-only tuition waiver. Indian applicants layer external India-linked scholarships on top of a Mines merit award or an assistantship offer.
| Scholarship | Value | Eligibility | Deadline | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inlaks Shivdasani Scholarship | Up to $100,000 (INR 94.50 Lakhs) across tuition, living, one-way airfare and health cover | Indian citizen under 30, first-class UG from a top-30 Indian institution, offer from top-ranked overseas programme | Tentative March 15, 2027 for 2027 entry | Inlaks Foundation online form plus written study proposal |
| JN Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship | Up to INR 10 Lakhs interest-free loan plus a gift award of INR 75,000 to 1 Lakh | Indian citizen with confirmed offer from an overseas PG programme, family income under INR 25 Lakhs | Tentative March 22, 2027 for 2027 entry | JN Tata Trust online portal with academic transcripts |
| KC Mahindra Scholarship for PG Studies Abroad | Up to INR 10 Lakhs (grant portion) with additional interest-free loan option | Indian citizen with confirmed overseas PG offer and demonstrable financial need | Tentative March 31, 2027 for 2027 entry | KC Mahindra Education Trust online application |
Mines admits typically pair Inlaks or JN Tata with a Graduate Research Assistantship. The GRA covers tuition, and Inlaks or JN Tata cover living costs, health cover and airfare for Fall 2027 arrivals.
Priority courses for Indian Inlaks applicants include MS Petroleum Engineering, MS Geophysics and MS Mining Engineering. Mines holds QS Rank 1 for Mineral and Mining Engineering in 2026, which strengthens the university-choice essay for external funders.
Applicants outside the first-class band should redirect effort to Mines merit awards, JN Tata or KC Mahindra rather than compete for Inlaks.
Colorado School of Mines PhD Scholarships
Mines funds nearly every admitted PhD student with a tuition waiver plus stipend. Indian applicants entering the PhD pipeline start with full internal funding for the standard 4 to 5 year duration.
| Scholarship | Value | Eligibility | Deadline | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PhD Research Assistantship | Full tuition plus $28,000 to $36,000 (INR 26.46 to 34.02 Lakhs) annual stipend for 4 to 5 years | Admitted PhD applicant matched to a funded research group at Mines | December 15, 2026 (priority) for Fall 2027; March 1, 2027 (regular) | Direct faculty outreach before admission submission |
| PhD Fellowship (Mines Fellows Program) | Full tuition plus $32,000 (INR 30.24 Lakhs) annual stipend, no teaching load in year 1 | Top-ranked PhD admit across all engineering and applied science tracks | Tentative January 15, 2027 for Fall 2027 nomination | Automatic nomination by admission committee |
| Schlumberger Faculty for the Future Fellowship | Up to $50,000 (INR 47.25 Lakhs) per year covering tuition, living and travel | Indian woman pursuing a STEM PhD, commitment to teach or research in India after completion | Tentative November 15, 2026 for 2027 cohort | Separate application through Schlumberger Foundation portal |
PhD funding at Mines runs unusually steady across departments. Petroleum, Mining, Geophysics and Materials Science offer year-round funding through the National Renewable Energy Laboratory partnership and industry sponsors located near the Golden campus.
Indian PhD candidates in Mineral and Mining Engineering benefit from Mines holding QS Rank 1 in the subject for 2026. That ranking anchors the choice-of-institution justification for external nominators like Fulbright-Nehru or Schlumberger.
The Schlumberger fellowship pays higher than a standard PhD RA and covers travel plus health. It stacks with a Mines RA only in part, since both cover tuition, but recipients keep the higher living stipend.
External Government Scholarships at Colorado School of Mines
External government routes stack cleanly with Mines internal funding for Indian applicants. Five options carry the strongest fit for Colorado School of Mines master’s and PhD admits from India.
| Scholarship | Value | Eligibility | Deadline | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship | Full tuition, monthly stipend, health insurance, one round-trip airfare | Indian citizen, minimum 3 years professional work experience, bachelor’s with strong record | Tentative May 15, 2026 for 2027-28 entry | USIEF online application plus references and study objective |
| Inlaks Shivdasani Scholarship | Up to $100,000 (INR 94.50 Lakhs) covering tuition, living, airfare and health cover | Indian citizen under 30, first-class UG, offer from top-ranked overseas programme | Tentative March 15, 2027 for 2027 entry | Inlaks Foundation online form with study proposal |
| National Overseas Scholarship (Government of India) | Full tuition plus $15,400 (INR 14.55 Lakhs) annual maintenance plus airfare plus contingency grant | SC, ST, denotified nomadic, artisan or landless labour category with family income under INR 8 Lakhs | Tentative March 31, 2027 for 2027 cohort | Ministry of Social Justice online portal |
| KC Mahindra Scholarship for PG Studies Abroad | Up to INR 10 Lakhs (grant) with additional interest-free loan option | Indian citizen with confirmed overseas PG offer and demonstrable financial need | Tentative March 31, 2027 for 2027 entry | KC Mahindra Education Trust online application |
| JN Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship | Up to INR 10 Lakhs interest-free loan plus gift award of INR 75,000 to 1 Lakh | Indian citizen with confirmed overseas PG offer, family income under INR 25 Lakhs | Tentative March 22, 2027 for 2027 entry | JN Tata Trust online portal with transcripts |
Reddit Insight: Fulbright-Nehru candidates targeting Mines say the Petroleum Engineering and Geological Engineering essays land stronger, because Mines holds QS Rank 1 in Mineral and Mining. Applicants without 3 years of professional experience redirect to Inlaks or JN Tata instead.
Fulbright-Nehru does not stack with a Mines Graduate Research Assistantship, since Fulbright pays tuition directly. Applicants holding an Inlaks award typically use a Mines GRA for tuition and Inlaks for living plus travel, splitting the cost stack.

Colorado School of Mines Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is the maximum scholarship stack an Indian student can secure at Colorado School of Mines?
Ans. A funded PhD Research Assistantship covers full tuition worth around $42,840 (INR 40.48 Lakhs) plus a stipend of up to $36,000 (INR 34.02 Lakhs) per year. Stack that with a Schlumberger Faculty for the Future Fellowship or an Inlaks award to reach nearly INR 80 Lakhs annually across tuition, living and travel.
Ques. When should Indian applicants apply for Colorado School of Mines scholarships?
Ans. Submit the UG application by November 1, 2026 for Fall 2027 priority review and the International First-Year Merit Award. Submit PG applications by March 1, 2027 for Fall 2027 assistantship consideration. Contact potential PhD advisors 6 to 8 weeks before the December 15, 2026 priority date.
Ques. Do Indian students need a separate application for Mines scholarships?
Ans. The International First-Year Merit Award, International Student Merit Scholarship and departmental merit awards run automatically through the admission review with no extra form. Graduate assistantships require faculty outreach before or during the admission cycle. External awards like Fulbright-Nehru, Inlaks and JN Tata run through their own portals separately.
Ques. What UG marks do Colorado School of Mines scholarships require for Indian applicants?
Ans. The International First-Year Merit Award targets applicants with 85% or higher in CBSE, ICSE or equivalent state boards. The International Student Merit Scholarship requires a Mines GPA of 3.0 or higher after year one. GRA and PhD assistantships expect a strong UG record from a recognised Indian engineering institution.
Ques. Does the Mines scholarship cover living costs in Golden, Colorado?
Ans. Mines merit awards apply to tuition only. Budget INR 22 Lakhs per year for accommodation, food and transport in the Golden area, based on the 2026-27 cost of attendance of $23,450. PhD assistantships pay a stipend of $28,000 to $36,000 (INR 26.46 to 34.02 Lakhs) that covers living costs after tax.
Ques. How competitive is the International First-Year Merit Award at Colorado School of Mines?
Ans. The award is based on academic strength shown in the Mines application. Indian applicants with 90% or higher board marks, SAT above 1450 or ACT above 32, plus strong STEM electives, sit in the target band. Renewal requires a Mines GPA of 3.0 or higher each academic year.

I have federal financial aid through FAFSA.
I was living in Florida and got a mailer from school. My family was in the process of moving to Colorado so I looked at Mines and the other large Colorado schools and really fell in love with the small size and feel of the campus. Everyone is friendly, and the coursework is rigorous. Many companies know Mines by name and seek out interns that are from our school which has been awesome in finding job opportunities!
