What Students Say
Likes
- Top College in US and is in NYC
- Provides a lot of facilities such as wellness things, student support, gaming utilities etc.
- Faculty is really good and knowledgeable.
Dislikes
- Expensive. Tuition fee is extravagant.
- Less student aid offered. It should offer more student aid to make life easier.
- Have to pay for credits used for internship.
Course Curriculum
- The difficulty of course curriculum depends on the subjects we take. The subjects I took, I would rate it as moderate. It had both theoretical and practical knowledge involved.
- Some courses had very positive aspects such as exams and projects that pushed me to perform better. Some had negative aspects such as no exams, no projects which required merely less efforts.
- There are typically 1 class per day max 3 classes per week. Timings are usually evening from 6pm to 8:30 pm. Approximately, 45% of total admissions were Indian students.
Admission Experience
- 1. Arizona State University (Admitted)
2. New York University (Admitted)
3. University of Texas Dallas (Admitted)
4. Northeastern University (Admitted)
5. Carnegie Mellon (Rejected. I got rejected because I feel I didn't have good GRE score to get into this college as it is one of the best colleges in the world and highly competitive. Also I felt like I should have some achievements to get into such competitive colleges.) - I chose NYU over others because my friends were in NY and that college is situated in the Big Apple where plenty of opportunities are available be it startups or big tech companies. The admission process consisted of applying and waiting for result. Eligibility criteria was GRE and TOEFL. I guess min score was 115 in GRE. The overall admission experience as moderate.
- I applied to Fall 2023 and the factors that influenced my decision was a companies usually hire during the Fall season just after we graduate in May. The admission process took 3 months. I applied somewhere in August 2022 as soon as the applications opened and got accepted in month of January 2023. The application took approximately less than 10 minutes to complete.
Faculty
- Faculty to student ratio is somewhere around 1:60. I don't think it influences the quality of education. Teaching methodology of professors is really good.
- They have different ways of explaining things. Yes, the teaching approach is sufficient to secure a job in the market. Some professors have partnerships with companies or some professors are associate professors who work in the industry and are willing to refer students in their company. The faculty I admire the most are Torsten Suel, Frieda Fund and Kamen Yotov.
Campus Life
- My college have a lot of campuses. They have quite a lot in New York, Washington DC, Shanghai, Abu Dhabi. All of the facilities are available in most of the campuses such as student lounge, basket ball court, swimming pool, library, medical center, gym etc.
- Major campus festivals are NYU All Campus Tournaments in which various departments across NYU compete in various games to win prizes. There are a lot of clubs for extra curricular activities such as painting club, singing club and many more.
Part Time Jobs
- There are plenty of on campus positions available but compared to the number of students, the competition is really high. Pay range is $19/ hour for undergraduate students and $29/hour for graduate students. Other on campus jobs are GA or graduate Assistants. The hourly wage is $29/hour. Maximum hours allowed per week is 20 hours. No student is allowed to work more than 20 hours/week. It would very difficult to get on Campus.
- Students are not allowed to work off campus. But if they work on campus for 20 hours, they earn about $500 per week. Part time employment is really difficult. For part time jobs NYU provides a portal called handshake. You have to apply there by uploading your resume. A better way is to directly reach out to the professor or do cold emails. Also, many jobs are not posted on handshake so follow Courant list.
Placement
- Approx 60% people after graduating are able to secure jobs within 6 months of graduation. Average salary in NYU is $50-$100 / hour. Students apply handshake, LinkedIn, GitHub simplify list and by attending career fairs. Also, reach out to recruiters.
- I interviewed for Amazon and there were 4 rounds. 1st round was OA and other 3 involved technical + behavioral questions. Major companies that hire Are Amazon, Meta, Intuit, Apple and Tesla.
Accommodation
- I opted for off campus accommodation in the Bed Stuyvesant area. One of my friends found and invited me to join the lease. Monthly rent is around $800 including all utilities(hot water, gar, electricity) for private bedroom.
- The only challenge we encountered was to find the guarantors. Guarantors charge a lot of money approx. $1000 to guarantee that you would be able to pay the rent. My accommodation is approx. 20 mins from college. Most of the Indian students stay in Bayridge or journal square.
Exams
- Exams required for admission are GRE and TOEFL/IELTS.
- Documents required are passport, undergraduate transcript, GRE and TOEFL score reports and undergraduate degree, statement of purpose and recommendation letters either from professors or company employees in which you worked. There was no interview involved in the application process. Just an online application.
Fees
- The fee structure is around $70000. There are 4 semesters each consisting of 9 credits. Remaining 3 credits can be divided into 1.5 each which allows you to do summer and spring internships.
- Cost of per credit was around $2305. Insurance cost is separate which is around $3k. The fees are charged semester-wise and have to before every semester begins. I pay $800 for a private bedroom including all utilities and $200 for food and $70 for transportation.
Scholarship
- I did not receive any scholarship but my friends have. The scholarship amount varies from $5000 - $7000 for the entire course. I don't know the exact number of people who received it but many of my friends got it.
- I think to be eligible for scholarships you should have good GRE and TOEFL scores. Maybe 120+ in GRE and 115+ in TOEFL. The name of scholarship awarded to students is called merit scholarship.
