What Students Say
Likes
- The professors are very good here, they are very passionate about their subjects and they are ready to help us with anything we want. They engage the class so well that we will be pulled into the class, and we will be curious to learn.
- There are tons of events going on always every week I can see that there are atleast 5 events going on where I can even get free food.
- There are lots of clubs where you can explore your interests, starting from the painting club to the space club. There are as many clubs as you want. You can have any hobby, there will be a club at NYU.
Dislikes
- We don't have a campus here. The campus is very small, and we have buildings with the flag of NYU all around New York, which is when we understand ohhh!!! this is also NYU, it's plain buildings, we won't get the experience of college vibes with big campuses. It feels like just going to college and coming back to the room.
- The fee here is very expensive. Its very huge amount which takes up most of the money we spend here.
- Living expenses is also very expensive compared to other colleges, the rent is very high in NYC and also other expenses.
Course Curriculum
- - In my 1st sem, I have taken easy courses to get used to this environment; overall course difficulty is not that high. The classes here are more emphasised on practical knowledge than theory.
- - Positive aspect of our course is that it is at the forefront of the development of technology, and the pay is great in CS allied fields. From my college point of view, i can say that the professors are great; they have done lots of work in the field and have a great reputation. I get to learn from industry leaders in a hands-on way.
- One negative thing is that the course is heavily crowded, attracting many students to study and it will be more competitive when compared to other fields.
- We will have only 3 classes per week, according to what subjects we choose; each class will span 2.30 hrs, and timing is very flexible.
- The average number of students in our class is 30. Out of 100 students, there will be around 50 Indian students. Around 50% of students are Indian.
Admission Experience
-
I applied for the following universities:
- New York University Tandon - Admit
- Arizona State University - Admit
- University of Colorado Boulder - Reject
- University of Massachusetts Amherst - Reject
- Pennsylvania State University - Admit
- Michigan State University - Reject
- Case Western Reserve University - Admit
- The University of Arizona - Admit
- University of Pittsburgh - Admit
- University of Florida, Gainesville - Admit
- All colleges for MSCS
- University of Colorado Boulder, University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Michigan State University – in all these 3 colleges, I was rejected. The reason may be that these colleges are cheaper and also provide better education, so most Indians prefer these colleges; maybe that is the reason this becomes competitive.
- NYU is ranked 45th in the world ranking, which was in my ambitious category. and one more factor is that it is in New York City. The alumni network here is very strong, so it would be beneficial for the students.
- We had to fill out the online application form, which had all the personnel's basic details, and we had to submit a statement of purpose, which had to be exactly 2 pages with specified font and line spacing so this would fit fewer words. And I had to submit 3 Letters of Recommendation from my professors. This was the process for the application; it was pretty smooth compared to other applications. Once I got accepted, I had to pay $500 to confirm the admission and proceed. I had to request an I-20 form from the college for Visa purposes. Once they issue the I-20, we can apply for the visa.
- They accept the GRE exam. The GRE is optional; it is better to write the GRE and get more than 310 out of 340.
- The only challenge I had was the time I had to apply early to be considered 1st. Other than that, I didn't face any issues.
- I applied for the Fall 2025 intake. Generally, for most of the fall intake, it is the main admission time, so all admissions for all the courses will be open. This is also the time when most of the big companies start recruiting, so we will have better opportunities. one more factor is whether it will be warm in September; it will be very difficult if we come in January, which is a peak winter time in some parts of usa.
- December 1st was the deadline for the application to be given high priority. I started the application on November 15th 2024, and I submitted it on November 28th 2024. I got the result on March 5th, 2025.
Faculty
- In my Courses average faculty-to-student ratio is 30; this is not a huge number, and we can talk to professors without any issues. This small number of students in class helps us to get involved and interact in class.
- They involve us in everything they teach; they will pull you in and make you curious. They are passionate about their subjects and also about teaching. We have very experienced lecturers, and they also have industry experience. They teach the content which is required by the industry.
- They will assist in finding full-time roles from their networks. I admire Daniel Katz; he makes a very boring subject called Programming Languages very interesting. He is very passionate about teaching.
Campus Life
- We have 2 campuses, one in Manhattan and another in Brooklyn. Most of our classes will be in NYU Tandon, which is located in Brooklyn. We have free shuttle services to travel between these campuses.
- We have multiple libraries; one of them is the Dibner Library in the Tandon campus, and there are more in the Manhattan campus. We can also access public libraries using our NYU ID. We can access our college gym with ID for free and also the swimming pool and all sports facilities. We can take medical insurance from NYU which is expensive.
- The major events are the NYU entrepreneurial festival, and we will be celebrating all Hindu festivals in the Hindu Student Union. We have an Entrepreneurial club which is in the top 8 in the US.
- We have a very good club for Hindu students and also other religions. They will celebrate their festivals, and they will have weekly events. For example, in the Hindu student union we have weekly Darshanas where we will be performing poojas. And we will celebrate all festivals like Dussehra, Diwali, and Ganesh Chaturti. We have basketball, and one drawback is that we don't have any open stadium or court. SO it is difficult for those who want to play outdoor games.
Part Time Jobs
- In the 1st year, it's very difficult to secure a part-time job; only 5% get an on-campus job. In the second year 95% will get a job.
- They will pay anywhere between 20 and 30 max.
- Master's students can only work as TAs, GAs or any desk jobs. They cannot work in any other jobs.
- We can work a maximum of 20 hours per week. It's very difficult in 1st year and will be easy in 2nd year.
- Indian students work as an RA, GA, or TA. Typically in the current there the pay will be less and they will pay around $20. -- In the 1st year, it's very difficult to secure a part-time job; only 5% get an on-campus job. In the second year 95% will get a job.
- We have a website called handshake where we will have job postings so we can apply there . another option is cold mailing the professors; we have to mail as many professors as possible, requesting any openings. After any of these steps, you will be called for an interview; they will call you for an interview if selected in screening.
Placement
- Almost all will get a job finally through the network of NYU.
- Average salary range is 90k
- They find it through LinkedIn referrals or through job portals and/or in career fairs. Networking is very important.
- Our seniors found it difficult at the beginning to find an internship; eventually, everyone got one, a paid one or an unpaid one. Still, they are looking for full-time jobs; some are facing difficulty in it, but still they are optimistic about it.
- Facebook, microsoft, and amazon.
Accommodation
- I found it through a broker.
- I pay rent of $860, including all the furniture and utilities, that is water, electricity and gas.
- It was very difficult to find an accommodation; we had to go through many websites and had to call landlords late at night.
- I don't have any leads for accommodation. Start to look for accommodation early and contact any seniors who are passing out, that would be an easy option. We have to travel 30 minutes by train.
Exams
- We had to have an English proficiency exam to be taken TOEFL or IELTS. For TOEFL, we should have a score greater than 90 for 120. And GRE is optional, but it is recommended to take GRE Anything above 310 is a good score on the GRE.
- We have to write 2 2-page statements of purpose where you have to highlight your past achievements and degree and also what your ambition is. We need 3 letters of recommendation from your professors. And you should submit your resume. And some important documents like Mark's card, degree certificate, and passport.
Fees
- The tuition fee comes to around $23000 per semester, so we will have 4 semesters in 2 years. Finally, we will be paying $92000 as the tuition fee. In addition to this, we have to take health insurance, which will cost us 960 per semester for NYU health insurance.
- The fee should be paid semester-wise, or there is another option to pay in instalments, for which they will charge an extra few dollars.
- I am paying a total rent of 860 for a private room, including all utilities. The cost for utilities would be around $60. Other than that, for food, travel and other things we will be spending around $300. Totally, we need 1200 minimum per month for living expenses with a private room.
Scholarship
- I got a scholarship from NYU that is $4000 per year. Generally, most of those who get admitted to NYU get this scholarship.
- One of my friends got full funding from the Karnataka state government, where they will cover his whole tuition fee and also his living expenses. It is called Dr Ambedkar Overseas Scholarship.
- Eligibility for this is that the student should have an income below 12 L and he should belong to the SC/ST category. The same scheme is there in the Central government as well, but it is more competitive when compared to the state scholarship.
