Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

  • When I was looking at all the possible colleges I could get into, the University of Houston was always among the top for me because of its strong electrical engineering program and also the oil and gas industry in Houston. Due to this, there are a lot of job opportunities over here in Houston, mainly for electrical engineers.

Colleges Where I Was Rejected

Reason for Rejection

  • When I was applying, I tried to aim high and applied to these universities. Even though it was disappointing not to get into these universities, it also helped me see where I stood and what I needed to improve.

Tips to enhance your application

  • My advice would be to prepare a strong CV, LOR and SOP. Also make sure to take the GRE exam even though it's not a necessity. It might give you an edge among the similar profiles. So highly recommend taking the GRE exam. Even I did.

Admission Experience

  • When deciding where to pursue a master's, I decided on the USA because of its infrastructure, industry connections and global recognition in engineering and technology. Among the universities, the University of Houston stood out for many reasons, such as its good electrical engineering program and the location of the university.
  • Even though I couldn't get into universities like Purdue and Texas A&M, which are some of the best in the country, UH was a good place to pursue my master's for great exposure to the industry and a network of professionals.

Class Schedule

9

  • I used to have classes 2 days a week. Where each day I used to have 2 classes of about 1.5 hours each. The timing of the class depends upon the professor. But normally the same timings will be followed for the whole semester. The average strength of my class used to be around 20-25, which is on the lower side compared to other departments. There used to be a good number of Indian master's students.

Faculty

9

  • We totally have 5-6 faculties in our department (mainly who take the courses for us). Even approachability was good, as they would have designated office hours, which used to remain the same throughout the semester.
  • The best professor that I had was Professor Harish. He took the Power Electronics course. Even though the course was tough, he made sure that we learnt stuff that was relevant to today's industry needs. They do help in getting part-time opportunities on campus, like assistantships. Some professors do help in getting full-time roles.

Campus Life

9

  • Our college has 4 campuses. I can't comment on all of them since I have only been to one. We have a medical center that gives us free body checks since we are already enrolled in one of their recommended health insurance plans.
  • We have a recreation center with volleyball, basketball, and badminton courts along with a gym.

Part Time Jobs

  • Most students try and get assistantships from their professors, which actually pay you well compared to the other on-campus jobs with the ability to work upto 40 hours a week in summer. The difficulty of it depends on their department. While some departments take a lot of RAs, others might not even have a lab to work in.
  • Getting assistantships (TA/RA/GA) depends upon the connection you can build with the professor. Some students get it in the first semester by mailing the professor beforehand, while others get it after taking their subject. Typical pay is about $14/hour, where you can work a maximum of 20 hours a week.
  • Other on-campus jobs will be available in CASA, gyms, libraries, and on-campus dining.

Placement

9

  • As I mentioned earlier, Houston is a good place for electrical engineers to find a job. The oil and gas industry here provides a lot of job openings. Generally, everyone who graduated from electrical engineering here secures a job. The average salary is around $60,000. The most common way that people apply for jobs is through job portals.
  • But nowadays, getting referrals has become very common. The amount of salary offered depends on our experience level. Highest to lowest might vary from $90000 to $50000.

Accommodation

Off Campus
9

  • There are many WhatsApp groups for master's students where people post the availability of accommodation. Even I got one through such a WhatsApp group. There are many challenges faced. The most common one is the roommates that you get. You have to be very careful since you have to live with them every day; make sure you do proper research. My recommendation would be to learn cooking before you come here since food is a very big part of life here and outside food is very expensive.
