Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

  • I found out that UH has more reputation and value than UNT. International admissions at UNT are quite higher than UH.
  • Also, it's a lot tougher to get admission in the Computer Science department at UH.
  • Also, the opportunities for assistantships are quite higher at UH compared to UNT.

Colleges Where I Was Rejected

Reason for Rejection

  • I had the most probability of getting into this college. I don't know what went wrong with my application.
  • But I had a good GPA, GRE score and IELTS score.
  • There could be a problem with my SOP. Maybe I couldn't define my goals clearly.

Tips to enhance your application

  • Having just a good GPA and grades wouldn't guarantee admission to the UH CS course.
  • But rather, having an additional extra-curricular activity will boost the profile a lot. Include all your non-academic achievements in the documents to enhance the application.

Admission Experience

  • USA has good academics where I could learn practical skills. This university has a better reputation than other colleges. And CS courses have some good standards.
  • Houston's temperature is ideal for Indian temperatures. Careers are highly pursued in CM, MIS and IE courses in Houston.
  • Extracurricular activities like football and rec activities are conducted some or the other time.

Class Schedule

8

  • There are at least 3 hours of classes for each course a week.
  • Usually, for most CS courses, there'd be 2 classes lasting 1.5 hours each. Usually, they are scheduled for every alternate day.
  • There are, on average, 30-60 students in each class. There are people from different cultures attending classes, not many Indians.
  • Usually, I'd study mostly before assignment deadlines, so I used to spend atleast 3-4 hrs for each assignment.

Faculty

10

  • They are friendly, quite helpful, and not the dominating kind. I think I like those professors who don't give assignments like homework that were given when we were kids.
  • Although starting from scratch is a good idea, giving more time to basics takes away a lot of important time.
  • Yes, definitely; if it is within their help, they'll be able to refer.

Campus Life

10

  • The University of Houston has three campuses: the University of Houston Main Campus, the University of Houston Downtown and the University of Houston Sugar Land.
  • Most of my classes are scheduled at the University of Houston Main Campus.
  • There is a stadium and rec in the university that usually hosts one or the other event. There are games that are usually conducted at least once a month.

Part Time Jobs

  • On average, dining and other front desk jobs usually start at $12 per hour and can go up to $16 for tutoring jobs.
  • Usually, you have to apply online through Cougar Pathways. But most of the positions get filled through referrals and through networking.
  • Specifically, one has to work out with people who graduate that semester because their jobs can be filled through referral.
  • Almost every student will be able to find a part-time job on campus at the university.
  • Students can find assistantships through emailing professors. The monthly base pay is $1200 a month.
  • If not assistantships, there are jobs available at the front desk and dining too, which can be applied for through Cougar Pathways.
  • It's not easy, but with consistent efforts, one will be able to land a part-time job through networking and stuff. Max of 20 hours allowed on campus to work.

Placement

5

  • I'm not sure of full-time jobs after the course because I didn't graduate yet. Students usually find jobs by applying through LinkedIn or through referrals.
  • Sometimes, career fairs also work out. I saw some of my friends getting internship calls through career fairs.
  • Also, some bagged full-time roles through that. After all, I could say skills and luck have equal weightage.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • Through WhatsApp groups, I found people posting that they're looking for some more people so that they could sign a lease on.
  • And the lease agreement was signed online. The process went easily as some of my roommates are already living here.
  • But otherwise, you'll definitely need someone to lead you through all of the steps.
