Likes
- Career Fairs - My University helped me to connect with professional people and expanded my network with UH alumni.
- Infrastructure - UH has space or room for everything related to studies, recreational activities, sports, cultural activities, coaching, laboratories, dining, transportation, etc which helped me to balance work-life.
- Resources - UH Library is one of the biggest library in Houston with huge volume of books and systems to do research which helped me to do academic projects.
Dislikes
- Time Management: I did not like the time it takes to process documents related to CPT / I-20.
- Shuttle Facilities: I wish there is free shuttle provided for students staying in the nearby community though we have paid metro.
- On Campus Jobs: Competition for on-campus job is high so getting a part-time job immediately after joining is a concern.
Course Curriculum
- It is a mix of both. I would give 7 on a scale of 10.
- Positive: case study and mentors during project work.
- Negative: tight deadlines for assignments.
- 1 class per day. 3 hours, either in the noon or evening.
- 25-30 is the average number of students in my class.
- 10-15 Indian students are enrolled in my course.
Admission Experience
- I applied to 5-6 colleges.
- I got admission to UH & CSU. Waitlisted: GSU and the University of Michigan rejected my application.
- UH & CSU confirmed admission.
- Maybe my GRE score did not meet their eligibility.
- Three main reasons made me choose UH. I wanted to study at a good public university that can provide scholarships followed by a course plan, proper infrastructure, resources, and faculties. Beyond the confines of the classroom, I have actively participated in various extracurricular activities and events, including badminton tournaments, seminars, and cultural festivities. These experiences fostered meaningful connections with peers and faculty members. As a member of the GISO, Bridges International group, and through volunteer engagements, I have embraced opportunities to celebrate diversity, promote cultural exchange, and contribute to the global community.
- I had to take up TOEFL and GRE exams, then I had to pay 75 dollars for submitting an application along with SOP and LORs. I waited a couple of months to receive a confirmation. I have been asked to check the tuition fee and accept the offer. I received I-20 within 3-4 weeks for me to start my immigration process.
- GRE: 300+, IELTS: 7+; & TOEFL: 85-90
- It was not challenging for me. I was able to refer to the UH website for the admission process and I received an update regarding the application status and I-20 process within the timeline that I expected.
Faculty
- There are 10-12 faculties for my course and around 50-70 students. They have multiple platforms to guide students, such as face-to-face, hybrid, and online.
- Faculty was good. I would give 8 out of 10. They explain terms and helped me understand confusing topics with examples.
- I have to search on my own; however, there's a career portal where I can find jobs and apply.
- I like Hopkins, Ronald. He explained concepts based on real-world cases. It was easier to understand and apply in academic projects.
Campus Life
- UH has 3 campuses. One in Downtown, the second one in Sugarland, and the main campus is on Martin Luther King Road.
- UH has recreational center, library, sports facilities, hospital, medical services, conference halls, etc.
- Maithri, Glow Party, Fresher's Welcome Week Events, Cultural Explosion, etc. are the major campus festivals, clubs, or any popular events that take place at my college.
- UH has football and soccer stadiums. They have dedicated areas for other sports like basketball, volleyball, swimming pool, etc. They have a huge auditorium at the student centre for facilitating cultural activities.
Part Time Jobs
- 1 or 2 per department students typically secure Teaching Assistant (TA), Research Assistant (RA), or Departmental Assistant (DA) positions
- $1500 is the pay range for TA/RA/DA positions.
- Student assistant jobs in labs, libraries, and recreation centres. Somewhere around 800 to 1000 dollars are the other on-campus jobs available for students along with their usual hourly wages.
- 20 is the maximum hours of work allowed per week.
- It is manageable to secure on-campus part-time jobs.
- $10-$15 per hour. It is not easy to get part-time and UH has a job portal to apply for on-campus jobs. Recruiters will shortlist profiles based on their backgrounds. There's a standard template that we need to use. It is available on the Cougar career page. Access will be provided after admission. It is not easy to get part-time and UH has a job portal to apply for on-campus jobs. Students can apply on the career page of the UH website. Recruiters will shortlist profiles based on their background.
Placement
- 80% of my graduating batch secures employment within 6 months of completing their course.
- 70K to 100K, depending on their experience, is the average salary range that most students in my program can expect to earn upon graduation.
- LinkedIn, Glassdoor, referrals, etc. help students usually find jobs after graduation.
- Tesla, Biogen, Lucid, Dell, Shell, Apple, Samsung, AMD, Amazon, Walmart, etc. These companies come for recruitment.
- DHL, Shell, and Aramco hire SCM students; Dell hires data science students; and there are a lot more oil and gas companies visiting UH.
Accommodation
- Online platforms like Furnished Finder, WhatsApp groups, etc. helped me find accommodation.
- 680$, including utilities, was the monthly rent for my accommodation.
- I wish I had a vehicle to shift things, as it would have been easier.
- Upcoming students can use the Furnished Finder app or search the GISO UH page on Facebook.
- 6-7 miles away from the college. Most of the Indian students stay near NRG Stadium.
Exams
- GRE, TOEFL, IELTS if it's a graduate programme; SAT score is required for UG.
- SOP, LOR, and CV were the documents that were asked for.
Fees
- $50,000 is the tuition fee (it differs for every course) and hostel fee is between $600 and $700 per month. Meal plan is available for 6 months and 1 year which comes around $2600
- There are three types of methods one can opt. Full-payment in the beginning, or we can split into 4 and pay monthly, or opt deferment plan with interest after 90 days.
- Rent - $650 to $750 per room per month
- Transportation - $100 per month if we use public transport often and cab rarely.
- Food & Groceries - $300-$400 if we cook at home.
Scholarship
- Texas State Fund. Eligibility: Academic score and professional achievements are the scholarship during my course.
- $2500 was the award amount for the scholarship I received.
- My batchmates also received scholarships.
- It depends on the course and department. Students with consistent scores throughout their educational career along with impressive GRE and TOEFL scores will get 3500 to 4000 dollars per semester.
