Washington University in St. Louis has opened a new AI Engineering Master’s program for Fall 2027. The McKelvey School programme targets Indian computing graduates who want to build AI systems. Applications go live on September 1, 2026, per the university’s July 28, 2026 announcement. The 30-credit degree splits into 18 core credits and 12 electives, with a 2.7 GPA floor.
- The launch adds an AI engineering track alongside McKelvey’s existing MS Computer Science, which currently runs around ₹60 lakh in first-year tuition for Indian students.
- Entry demands a "sufficient computing background", plus 30 credit hours split as 18 in AI system engineering and 12 electives.
- Programme director Jonathan Shidal says the goal is graduates who can "customise" AI to specific goals, not just deploy off-the-shelf tools.
The launch lands as top US engineering schools race to move AI teaching out of computer science departments and into standalone, systems-first degrees. WashU’s angle is production engineering: designing, deploying, and optimising AI pipelines end to end.

What the WashU AI Engineering Master’s Covers
The programme sits inside the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at McKelvey. It is a coursework-based Master’s, not a thesis degree. Students take 18 credits of core AI engineering courses and 12 credits of electives.
Teaching centres on the operational side of AI: computational techniques, data pipeline dependencies, algorithm selection, and the compute infrastructure needed to run AI in production. That is a deliberate shift from the research-heavy path of most US MS AI degrees.
Note: A typical US MS in AI teaches you to train models. WashU’s new degree teaches you to run them at scale. That is the skill US employers now pay a premium for, because model-building is increasingly a solved problem while deployment is not.
Who Can Apply for the Fall 2027 Intake
McKelvey has not published a hard GPA cut-off for entry. The programme documentation only sets a maintenance floor: students must hold a B- (2.7 GPA) across all 30 credit hours once enrolled. The public criterion is a "sufficient computing background". In practice that means a Bachelor’s in computer science, engineering, mathematics or a closely related field with strong programming coursework.
International students, including Indian applicants, follow the standard McKelvey English tests: TOEFL iBT 90, IELTS 6.5, or Duolingo 125, as listed on the school’s admission pages.
What it means for Indian Students: A B.Tech in CSE, IT, ECE or Data Science should meet the computing-background test. Non-CS backgrounds like BSc Maths or BCA are eligible but should expect closer scrutiny of programming coursework and project evidence in the SOP.
Tuition and Living Costs for Indian Students
WashU has not released a separate tuition figure for the AI Engineering track. It will almost certainly track McKelvey’s standard Master’s tuition, which climbed to $69,190 for 2026-27, a rise of $2,340 on the previous year, per the WashU tuition notice.
At recent FX of about ₹87 per US dollar (August 2026), one year of tuition alone works out to roughly ₹60 lakh. Living costs in St. Louis add another $18,000-$22,000 a year, or ₹15-₹19 lakh.
| Cost head (Fall 2027 estimate) | USD | INR (₹87/USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition, per year | $69,190 | ₹60.2 lakh |
| Living and housing | $18,000-$22,000 | ₹15.6-19.1 lakh |
| Health insurance (mandatory) | $3,000-$3,500 | ₹2.6-3 lakh |
| Total, Year 1 | ≈ $92,000 | ≈ ₹80 lakh |
Master’s students at McKelvey are self-funded. The school confirms that full financial support is reserved for PhD students; MS applicants should plan around education loans, family funding, or partial merit aid.
Why This Matters for Indian AI Careers
The Indian pipeline into US AI Master’s degrees has surged since 2022, driven by hiring at Big Tech and AI-first startups. WashU is a top-tier private research university and its McKelvey School is a recognised feeder into engineering roles at Google, Meta, Microsoft and Amazon.
A dedicated AI engineering Master’s, as opposed to an MS CS with an AI specialisation, signals to US recruiters that the graduate has trained on production systems rather than only research pipelines. That distinction matters at the resume-screen stage for MLOps, AI infrastructure and platform engineering roles.
WashU has not yet confirmed the STEM designation for the new programme. Indian graduates should watch that box: STEM eligibility unlocks the 36-month OPT extension, which nearly triples the post-study work window from 12 to 36 months.
Key Caveat: Applications open September 1, 2026, but McKelvey has not yet published the round-by-round deadline calendar for the AI Engineering track. Indian applicants should aim for the December Round 1 window McKelvey uses for its other engineering Master’s, to keep visa timelines viable for a Fall 2027 arrival.
How Do Indian Students Apply for Fall 2027?
- Register on the McKelvey graduate admissions portal from September 1, 2026.
- Prepare transcripts, three recommendation letters, an SOP and a resume, per the standard McKelvey Master’s checklist.
- Book TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo well ahead. GRE is optional for most McKelvey Master’s programmes.
- Line up funding proof for the I-20: around $92,000 for Year 1, covering tuition, living and insurance.
- Book an F-1 visa slot at the earliest US consulate window once the I-20 arrives, typically March-May 2027 for a Fall intake.
Indian applicants targeting the Fall 2027 intake now have a fixed opening date. WashU’s application window unlocks on September 1, 2026, giving a two-week runway from the announcement to a live portal. The next inflection point is McKelvey’s Round 1 deadline, likely in early December 2026, and Indian applicants should treat that as the working target rather than the later cycles.
Next Key Date for Fall 2027 Applicants: The McKelvey AI Engineering Master’s portal opens on September 1, 2026. Round 1 deadlines for McKelvey engineering Master’s usually close in early December, so set that as your working target for a smooth F-1 visa run.
