The US Student and Exchange Visitor Program has issued a clarification that internships tied to elective courses no longer qualify for Curricular Practical Training. The change directly hits Indian F-1 students planning CPT-based summer or semester internships. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign relayed the guidance to enrolled students on August 25, 2026. It replaces a widely used reading that let electives anchor a CPT authorisation.

UIUC’s International Student and Scholar Services flagged the shift in a notice sent to affected students. The office said Designated School Officials will no longer authorise CPT tied to an optional course. Students must instead register for a required course whose learning outcomes match the internship.
