The United States-India Educational Foundation set July 1, 2026 as the deadline for its Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship. The award is open only to Indian scholars registered for a PhD in India. USIEF has run the Fulbright Program in India since 1950. The deadline covers the 2027-28 cycle, not the closed Master's degree route.
- The fellowship funds six to nine months of research in the US for Indian PhD scholars. It is open to those registered for a PhD by November 1, 2025.
- Applications target six priority fields, from artificial intelligence and semiconductors to defence and space.
- USIEF will reject any application filed after the July 1 cutoff or left incomplete.
The Fulbright-Nehru fellowships are among the most competitive funded routes to US campuses. They cover airfare, a monthly stipend, and health cover. This cycle rewards applicants who match the new India-US priority research areas.

USIEF Sets July 1 Deadline for 2027-28 Doctoral Award
The application window shuts at 11:59:59 pm IST on July 1, 2026. USIEF will not consider any form filed after that moment. Applications submitted before February 18, 2026 also do not count. The grant runs six to nine months at one US host institution. Each applicant may enter only one Fulbright-Nehru category per cycle. USIEF takes queries at the email ffsp@usief.org.in.
Note: USIEF asks for proposals that are futuristic and technology focused. A research plan tied to the named priority areas reads stronger.
Six Priority Research Areas Drive the 2027-28 Cycle
USIEF built this cycle on strategic India-US research priorities. The fellowship lists six fields and their sample subfields below.
| Priority field | Sample subfields |
|---|---|
| Critical Minerals and Supply Chains | Geology, Materials Science, Mining Engineering |
| Defense and Security | Cybersecurity, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics |
| Energy Security | Energy Engineering, Petroleum Engineering |
| Science and Research Collaboration | Bioengineering, Artificial Intelligence, Semiconductor Engineering |
| Space Cooperation | Astrophysics, Planetary Science, Satellite Communications |
| Technology and Innovation | Data Science, Quantum Computing, Electronics |
The grant covers J-1 visa support and a monthly stipend. It also funds round-trip economy airfare and sickness cover. USIEF provides no allowance for dependents.
Who Can Apply for the Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Fellowship?
You must be an Indian citizen registered for a PhD in India. That registration must date on or before November 1, 2025. The grant suits scholars who still need to finish their thesis. Your thesis submission must fall at least three months after the grant ends. You also upload a published paper or thesis extract, capped at 20 pages. Master's Applicants Must Wait for the Next Cycle
This deadline does not cover the Master's degree route. The last Fulbright-Nehru Master's deadline was May 14, 2025, which has passed. USIEF has not yet opened the 2027-28 Master's competition. The Master's track suits graduates with three years of work experience. Its fields differ and include public health, economics, and journalism. Degree-seekers should track the USIEF Master's page for the next call.
What it means for Indian Students: If you want a funded US master's, you cannot apply now. The live July 1 deadline is for PhD researchers, not degree applicants.

The deadline leaves a short, fixed runway. Late or incomplete forms get no exception. A clean submission needs every document ready in advance.
