Merrimack College is a private Catholic Augustinian university in North Andover, Massachusetts, ranked #38 among Regional Universities North by US News Best Colleges 2027. Founded in 1947 and set on a 220-acre campus about 25 miles north of Boston, it enrols roughly 4,191 students across five schools.

Indian students choose Merrimack College for STEM master’s programmes across the School of Science and Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Data Science, Applied Artificial Intelligence) and the MBA universities in USA pathway through the Girard School of Business. The college runs Fall and Spring intakes, offers automatic merit review for international applicants, and charges no application fee. Its US STEM-designated master’s degrees qualify graduates for a 24-month OPT extension.

Merrimack College Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Merrimack College admission requirements for Indian students combine an academic threshold, an English test and a financial declaration for the I-20.

Merrimack College Postgraduate Requirements for Indian Applicants

  • Academic: Recognised bachelor’s degree with minimum 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (equivalent to 3.0 GPA, official floor). STEM master’s programmes look for 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 in a related discipline (recommended).
  • English: TOEFL iBT 79 (no section below 18), IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0), Duolingo 110 or PTE Academic 53.
  • Credentials: Course-by-course WES evaluation of Indian transcripts; two letters of recommendation and a statement of purpose.
  • Standardised tests: GRE and GMAT are optional across all Merrimack College graduate programmes.

Merrimack College Undergraduate Requirements for Indian Applicants

  • Academic: Class 12 completion with 70% to 85% (recommended). Engineering and nursing tracks expect a science stream with strong maths.
  • English: TOEFL iBT 79 (no section below 18), IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0), Duolingo 110 or PTE Academic 53; SAT Evidence-Based Reading/Writing 510 or IGCSE O-level English Grade C also accepted.
  • Application: Common Application or Merrimack College Application, one teacher or counsellor recommendation, and a 650-word personal essay.

Key insight: Merrimack College does not require SAT or ACT scores in undergraduate review, and it charges no application fee, which lets Indian students apply without the $75 to $90 fee that most US universities levy.

Merrimack College Acceptance Rate 2027

The Merrimack College acceptance rate is 70% as per US News Best Colleges admissions data, with an early-action acceptance rate of 83.8%. The college is classified as a moderately selective institution, and admission decisions rest on academic record, essay and recommendations rather than test scores.

For Indian applicants, the practical selectivity is closer to that headline number because there is no separate international admissions quota; every file is compared against the same rubric. Early Action I (15 November 2026) continues to show the highest admit rate of the four Fall 2027 rounds.

Reality check: A 70% acceptance rate makes Merrimack College a target school for Indian applicants with a Class 12 above 75% or a bachelor’s above 65%, but the merit-scholarship award (which decides affordability) tightens sharply after February 2027, so timing matters more than rank ordering.

Merrimack College Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Merrimack College does not publish a single placement rate, but its Career Development Center reports that 94% of the most recent graduating class was employed, in graduate school or in service work within six months of graduation.

  • Employment within 6 months: 94% (as per Merrimack College Career Development Center, most recent graduating class)
  • Median early-career salary: Not disclosed by the college; US market medians for MS Engineering graduates run around $75,000 to $95,000 per year (₹71.12 to ₹90.09 Lakh, market estimate)
  • Top employer sectors: Healthcare, financial services, engineering consulting, government (representative sectors, not a disclosed recruiter list)
  • OPT and STEM OPT: All F-1 graduates qualify for 12 months of OPT; STEM-designated MS programmes qualify for the 24-month extension
  • Career support: Career Development Center runs employer visits, alumni mentoring, and a dedicated STEM OPT paperwork desk for international graduates

Insider note: Indian STEM graduates from Merrimack College typically anchor OPT jobs in the Boston metro (25 miles south) rather than in North Andover itself; healthcare and engineering employers along the I-93 and I-495 corridors are the most common first-job destinations.

Merrimack College vs Peer Universities

The peer set below compares Merrimack College with other Regional Universities North and STEM-friendly private institutions Indian applicants commonly shortlist.

Merrimack College stands out among Regional Universities North for combining a lower per-credit graduate tuition with an automatic international merit review, and it is one of the few peers offering a STEM-designated MS Applied Artificial Intelligence at under $17,000 total tuition. Fairfield and Quinnipiac carry stronger regional brands, but both charge 40% to 55% more per credit and require a separate scholarship application.

Merrimack College suits Indian applicants who want a suburban Boston-metro campus with STEM OPT eligibility, a per-credit tuition under $750 for most master’s programmes, and a guaranteed merit review that lands between ₹9 Lakh and ₹21 Lakh per year. Total investment for a two-year MS runs about ₹75 Lakh including living costs, against a US market median STEM salary of ₹71 to ₹90 Lakh, meaning the degree can pay back inside three years of OPT employment plus a US universities in USA H-1B pathway.

Merrimack College is not the right fit for applicants who want a Top-100 QS or THE global brand, a research-heavy PhD pipeline, or a metro-centre campus with dense internship density; Northeastern, Boston University or a UC campus better match those goals.

Merrimack College FAQs

Ques. What English tests does Merrimack College accept from Indian students?

Ans. Merrimack College accepts TOEFL iBT 79 with no section below 18, IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0, Duolingo English Test 110, PTE Academic 53, IGCSE O-level English at Grade C or SAT Evidence-Based Reading/Writing 510. Indian applicants who studied Class 12 or a bachelor’s degree entirely in English medium can request an English-proficiency waiver by submitting a school-issued medium-of-instruction certificate with the application.

Ques. Does Merrimack College charge an application fee for Indian applicants?

Ans. No. Merrimack College charges no application fee for undergraduate or graduate applicants, regardless of nationality. Indian applicants can submit through either the Common Application or the Merrimack College Application at no cost, which typically saves 75 to 90 USD (about 7,000 to 8,500 INR) compared with peer US universities. The application does still require a 650-word essay, one letter of recommendation and a notarised bank letter for the I-20.

Ques. How long can Indian graduates stay in the US after Merrimack College?

Ans. All Merrimack College F-1 graduates qualify for 12 months of Optional Practical Training. Graduates of STEM-designated master’s programmes such as MS Civil Engineering, MS Data Science, MS Applied Artificial Intelligence and MS Computer Science qualify for a further 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving up to 36 months of legal US work authorisation. Extensions require e-Verify employer registration and a training plan filed through the college’s International Student Support office.

Ques. Are GRE or GMAT scores required for Merrimack College graduate programmes?

Ans. No. GRE and GMAT scores are optional across every graduate programme at Merrimack College, including the MBA, MS Engineering and MS Data Science degrees. Admissions decisions rest on undergraduate GPA, transcripts, letters of recommendation, statement of purpose and relevant work experience. Indian applicants who already hold competitive GRE or GMAT scores can still submit them to strengthen a marginal file, but there is no penalty for omitting the tests.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at Merrimack College?

Ans. Yes. F-1 visa holders at Merrimack College may work on-campus up to 20 hours per week during term and 40 hours during official breaks. Off-campus employment is not permitted in the first two semesters; after that, students may apply for Curricular Practical Training tied to their programme’s internship requirement. On-campus roles include research assistantships, library and dining services, and typically pay 15 to 17 USD per hour (about 1,400 to 1,600 INR).

Ques. What financial documents do Indian applicants need for the Merrimack College I-20?

Ans. Merrimack College issues the I-20 after the admission deposit is paid and international students submit a declaration of finances and a notarised bank letter confirming liquid funds covering one full academic year of tuition plus living costs, roughly 80,000 USD (about 76 Lakh INR) for undergraduates. Approved sources include savings accounts, fixed deposits or education loans from Indian public-sector or NBFC lenders; sponsor letters from immediate family are also accepted with matching proof of funds.

Ques. Which Indian education loan providers finance Merrimack College degrees?

Ans. Public-sector banks including State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and Punjab National Bank fund Merrimack College degrees under their overseas education loan schemes, typically up to 1.5 Crore INR with collateral. NBFC lenders such as HDFC Credila, Avanse and Auxilo offer non-collateral loans up to 50 to 75 Lakh INR for STEM master’s programmes. Loan sanction letters are accepted by Merrimack as proof of funds for the I-20 in place of a bank balance certificate.

Ques. Does Merrimack College offer online or hybrid master’s programmes for Indian students?

Ans. Yes. Merrimack College runs several master’s programmes in fully online or hybrid mode through Merrimack Online, including MEd, MS Engineering Management, MS Product Management and MBA. Fully online degrees do not qualify for an F-1 visa or OPT and are pursued from India, while hybrid programmes require in-person residency at the North Andover campus and preserve F-1 eligibility. Indian applicants targeting OPT should choose the on-campus or hybrid variant, not the fully online track.

Overview

It was close to home, offered greek life and on-campus housing. They were able to accept my transfer credits and I had friends who also attended the college. I liked the idea of a smaller campus with catholic roots.
