Hunter College admissions route Indian applicants through the centralised CUNY undergraduate application and a separate Hunter graduate application. The academic floor is Class XII at around 65 percent for freshman entry, and a Bachelor’s with 60 percent or higher for most Master’s programmes.

  • Next live deadline: International freshman applications close 1 December 2026 for Fall 2027.
  • Base tuition USD 17,295 (INR 16.34 Lakhs) UG, USD 25,650 (INR 24.24 Lakhs) PG. App fee USD 65 UG (INR 6,143), USD 75 PG (INR 7,088).
  • UG floor: Class XII 65 percent and IELTS 6.0. PG floor: Bachelor’s 60 percent and IELTS 6.5.
  • Acceptance rate estimated at 45 to 55 percent, on the selective end for CUNY campuses.

Popular Indian-student picks include the BS in Computer Science, the MS in Computer Science, the MSW at the Silberman School of Social Work, and the MFA in Creative Writing. Applicants on the Hunter College overview page describe the campus as academically demanding but rare value for Manhattan-based US education.

Admission Status: Open. Hunter’s primary intake is Fall 2027 (August start). International freshman applications through the CUNY application close 1 December 2026 with an application fee of USD 65 (INR 6,143). The Hunter graduate application for Fall 2027 closes 1 February 2027 with a fee of USD 75 (INR 7,088). Spring 2027 international deadlines (1 September 2026) have closed.

Hunter College Application Deadlines for Indian Students

Hunter College runs two intakes each academic year, Fall (August) and Spring (January), but international applicants face earlier cut-offs than domestic students because of visa and credential-evaluation timing. Fall is the primary intake, with almost every programme available. Dates below follow the Hunter International Students Office prospective page and the graduate deadlines page.

Hunter’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall (August) — most Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes open here.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use USD 1 = INR 94.50, the most recent published rate on 8 September 2026. Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

Hunter uses rolling review after the international deadline only if seats remain — treat 1 December (UG) and 1 February (PG) as firm. Spring 2028 international dates have not yet been published on the Hunter site.

Planning note: Indian applicants requesting an I-20 must submit financial documents at least 8 weeks before intended visa interview, so aim to apply 4 to 6 weeks ahead of the stated deadline.

Hunter College Eligibility for Indian Students

Eligibility at Hunter College splits by degree level. The floors below are institution-wide minimums drawn from the Hunter international admissions page and the graduate application procedure page. Individual programmes, especially Nursing, Physical Therapy, and Social Work, layer additional prerequisites on top.

Hunter College UG Eligibility

  • Academic: Class XII (CBSE, ICSE, or state board) with a strong overall percentage, typically 65 percent or higher.
  • Testing: SAT or ACT accepted but not required for Fall 2027.
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 61, IELTS 6.0, PTE Academic 44, or paper TOEFL 500.
  • Curriculum rigour: Coursework in Mathematics and English through Class XII, with sciences where the intended major requires it.

Hunter College PG Eligibility

  • Academic: Recognised Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 60 percent, roughly equal to a US 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 90 (Writing 22, Speaking 23) or IELTS 6.5 overall.
  • Programme prerequisites: Prior coursework aligned to the field, e.g. CS bridge modules for the MS in Computer Science.
  • References and SOP: Two to three letters of recommendation plus a Statement of Purpose.

Hunter College IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Applicants whose post-secondary education was completed in a country where English is the native language are exempt from TOEFL or IELTS. Indian applicants whose Bachelor’s medium of instruction was English can request a waiver by submitting a signed medium-of-instruction letter on university letterhead, along with degree transcripts naming English as the language of instruction. Waivers are decided case by case and are not automatic.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Hunter College international admissions page for your chosen program before applying.

Hunter College PG Programs and English Requirements

Hunter offers roughly 75 Master’s programmes across the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, the Silberman School of Social Work, the Hunter Bellevue School of Nursing, and the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health hosted at Hunter. Base tuition sits at USD 25,650 (INR 24.24 Lakhs) per year for international Master’s students. Living costs, insurance, and per-credit variation for professional programmes sit on the detailed MS-in-USA cost pages.

MS Computer Science accepts three intakes (1 April, 1 November, 1 February for prior cycles) — international applicants should still target the 1 February deadline for Fall to allow visa lead time. MFA Creative Writing is Fall-only with a hard 1 February deadline and a required writing sample.

Insider note: Silberman School of Social Work admits the largest cohort of Indian MSW applicants at Hunter. Field-placement geography is set by the school, so applicants cannot pick their internship borough in advance.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Hunter graduate admissions page for international applicants for your chosen program before applying.

Hunter College UG Programs and English Requirements

Hunter College Application Process

Undergraduate and graduate applicants use different portals at Hunter. Steps below cover both paths. Freshmen apply through the CUNY-wide system that also feeds Queens, Baruch, and City College — you can list Hunter as one of up to six CUNY choices in a single fee.

  1. Create an applicant profile on the CUNY Application (undergraduate) at apply.cuny.edu, or the Hunter Graduate Application hosted on ApplyYourself for Master’s programmes.
  2. Select Hunter College and your intended major, then complete the personal and academic sections.
  3. Upload scanned academic transcripts, English test scores, and any programme-specific supplements such as writing samples or portfolios.
  4. Request two to three letters of recommendation for PG applications through the online recommender module.
  5. Pay the application fee of USD 65 (INR 6,143) for freshmen or USD 75 (INR 7,088) for graduate on the Hunter application portal before the deadline.
  6. Submit before 1 December 2026 (freshman) or 1 February 2027 (graduate) for Fall 2027 entry.
  7. Once admitted, accept your offer, pay the commitment deposit, and submit financial documents to the International Students Office for I-20 issuance.

Programme-specific supplements — a portfolio for MFA Studio Art, a writing sample for MFA Creative Writing, a video statement for MSW — are submitted inside the same graduate application, not separately.

Hunter College Admission Decisions and Offer Timeline

Hunter releases freshman decisions on a rolling basis from late January through mid-May for Fall intake. Graduate programmes typically release Fall decisions between March and May, though MFA and Social Work often decide by April.

  • Offer letter: Emailed by Hunter Admissions with instructions to log in to the applicant portal.
  • Acceptance deadline: National reply date of 1 May for freshmen, programme-set for graduates.
  • Conditional offers: Issued if English scores are pending — final admission subject to a valid TOEFL or IELTS by a set date.
  • Deferral: Admitted students may request a one-term deferral for documented reasons like visa denial or medical need.

Waitlisted freshmen are usually informed by mid-April, with movement continuing through June depending on melt.

Hunter College Documents Required for Indian Applicants

The paperwork list below sits alongside the online application itself and must be uploaded before your deadline. Academic and English score thresholds live in the Eligibility section; this list is paperwork only.

  • Passport bio-page scan valid at least six months past intended entry.
  • Certified academic transcripts and mark sheets from Class X, Class XII, and Bachelor’s (for PG).
  • Degree certificate or provisional certificate for graduate applicants.
  • Official English test score report (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or Duolingo where accepted).
  • Statement of Purpose for graduate programmes, typically 500 to 1,000 words.
  • Two to three Letters of Recommendation on institutional letterhead.
  • Curriculum Vitae or resume for graduate and mature-entry applicants.
  • Programme-specific portfolio, writing sample, or audition file where required.
  • Bank statement or sponsor bank letter showing at least USD 22,500 (INR 21.26 Lakhs) for I-20 issuance.
  • Signed Affidavit of Support if a family member is your financial sponsor.
  • Medical records and proof of health insurance covering one academic year.

Word-for-word translations on institutional letterhead are required for any non-English documents. Bank statements must be dated within three months of submission.

Hunter College Acceptance Rate for Indian Applicants

Hunter College is estimated at 45 to 55 percent acceptance rate for freshman applicants, based on third-party admissions data and self-reported CUNY figures. The university does not publish an official acceptance rate specifically for Indian applicants, and international selectivity often runs tighter than the overall figure because of visa-linked screening on financials.

Hunter College Freshman Selectivity

Freshman admission weighs Class XII overall percentage, individual subject performance, curriculum rigour, and the personal essay. SAT and ACT are considered but not required. Indian applicants typically strengthen offers by submitting SAT scores of 1200+ or ACT 25+ where available. Compare peer USA universities for reach and match choices.

Hunter College Graduate Selectivity

Graduate selectivity swings widely by department. MFA Creative Writing runs single-digit acceptance, MSW admits a large cohort, and MS Computer Science sits in the middle. Programme fit, prior coursework alignment, and a targeted SOP move offers more than raw GPA above the 60 percent floor.

Insider note: Hunter Honors College freshman applicants face a much lower acceptance rate than general Hunter freshman admits. Submit a separate Honors supplement by 1 December if you are targeting that route.

USA F-1 Student Visa Process for Hunter College Applicants

Indian students admitted to Hunter College need an F-1 student visa to enter the United States. Hunter’s International Students Office issues the SEVIS Form I-20 after admission and after your financial documents clear. Book your F-1 interview at a US consulate in India as soon as the I-20 arrives, since consulate wait times swing seasonally.

The core steps are — submit financial proof showing at least USD 22,500 (INR 21.26 Lakhs) in liquid funds, receive your I-20 from Hunter, pay the SEVIS I-901 fee, complete Form DS-160, book the visa appointment and biometrics, attend the interview with your I-20, admission letter, financial documents, and academic records. Full US visa document flow is covered on the US student visa guide for Indian applicants.

2026 update: Consular processing times for F-1 in India remain long — expect 6 to 10 weeks from I-20 issuance to visa stamping, longer during May and June peak.

Tips and Checklist for Hunter College Admissions

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Hunter College, mixing sequencing calls with strategy notes that show up repeatedly in accepted-applicant threads.

  • Start 6 to 8 months out: Book IELTS or TOEFL by June for a Fall 2027 cycle to leave retake room.
  • Order sealed transcripts early: Indian universities take 4 to 6 weeks to issue attested Class XII and degree transcripts.
  • Prepare the MOI letter parallely: Even if you plan to take IELTS, having a valid MOI letter as backup unlocks a waiver route.
  • Front-load the SOP: Draft, get faculty review, and edit at least twice — Hunter admissions weighs the essay heavily.
  • Stack recommenders 8 weeks out: Give referees enough runway and send the online recommender link before the deadline month.
  • Confirm sponsor funds early: The USD 22,500 bank balance requirement blocks I-20 issuance more than academics do.
  • Apply to two CUNY choices: Undergraduate applicants can list Hunter plus a second CUNY campus in one CUNY fee — a low-cost hedge.
  • Book the F-1 interview slot: Grab a consulate appointment the same week your I-20 arrives, especially for June to August intake.

Budgeting note — Manhattan living costs sit well above the tuition line. Review the full USA cost-of-living breakdown for Indian students before you commit a deposit.

Hunter College is one of the few US public universities where an Indian applicant can access a Manhattan address, a genuine research faculty, and CUNY-tier tuition in a single package — but every intake is deadline-tight and paperwork-heavy. Lock the 1 December (UG) or 1 February (PG) date on your calendar, keep the financial documents and IELTS ready by October, and treat the I-20 turnaround as the real long pole.

Overview

I applied to hunter college when I was a senior in high school because it had a good reputation for a CUNY school. CUNY schools in NYC are located in the city and cheaper than your traditional private college and it was the main reason I applied. the admission process was easy. I also applied to 4 other CUNY schools because you could apply to them under the same application with no additional application fee. I also applied to private schools and SUNY. I was accepted to 11/12 schools; denied for Columbia and waitlisted for NYU. when I applied I had a 1480 SAT 31 ACT and 93 GPA.

Overview

This college had the least amount of yearly tuition and is known for having a good pre-med program. I also wanted to go to a school that was within close proximity to where I live. I did not want to travel too far and the commute to this school is just right.

Scholarship

When I got into the school they offered me a position as a science research scholars. I had to fill out a form except that I agree with the terms of the scholarship and then I will maintain the necessary grade point average.

Good English programs as well as teaching programs which I was at a time considering pursuing and it offered affordable tuition that my financial aid covered. It was an easily accessible and beautiful location in the city.

Scholarship

Yes, I filled out the FAFSA to receive financial aid and have also received both need-based and merit-based scholarships through both the school directly and CUNY.
