Montana State University admissions run on rolling review across three international intakes each year, and Indian applicants clear the base academic bar with a Class XII score of about 65 percent for undergraduate entry or a Bachelor’s degree at 3.0/4.0 (roughly 70 percent) for graduate entry.

  • Fall 2027 primary intake: international undergraduate deadline 1 July 2027, graduate deadline 15 May 2027.
  • Base tuition: USD 31,214 (around INR 29.51 Lakhs) per year for undergraduates and USD 32,594 (around INR 30.82 Lakhs) for a 12-credit graduate load, with application fees of USD 38 (around INR 3,593) online for UG and USD 60 (around INR 5,673) for graduate.
  • Eligibility floor: Freshman entry needs Class XII at 2.5/4.0 GPA (about 65 percent) with IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 71, graduate entry needs a Bachelor’s at 3.0/4.0 with IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80.
  • Acceptance rate sits at around 73 percent, an access-focused profile that admits most applicants meeting the stated cutoffs.

Popular Indian-student picks include the Computer Science M.S., the Mechanical Engineering B.S., and the professional MArch, and reviews on the Montana State University Bozeman overview page point to strong faculty access, hands-on research from the first year, and a Bozeman location that keeps living costs below most US coastal peers.

Status: Open. Montana State University’s primary intake is Fall 2027 (late-August start), with the international undergraduate deadline on 1 July 2027 and the graduate deadline on 15 May 2027. Application fees are USD 38 (around INR 3,593) for the online undergraduate form and USD 60 (around INR 5,673) for graduate. Montana State University Eligibility for Indian Students

Montana State University uses one academic floor for each level and a separate English proficiency floor. Both must be met before the file moves to departmental review. Figures below come from the Quick Facts and English Proficiency pages.

  • UG freshman entry: Class XII at a 2.5/4.0 GPA (about 65 percent aggregate on the Indian scale).
  • UG transfer entry: post-secondary coursework at a 2.0/4.0 GPA (about 55 to 60 percent).
  • Graduate entry: Bachelor’s from a recognised university with a 3.0/4.0 GPA (roughly a first-class 70 percent, or 7.0/10 CGPA).
  • Test-optional undergraduate: SAT and ACT are not required. Submit them only if they help your file.

Accepted English tests and MSU’s institutional minimums are listed together below. Some graduate departments post higher scores, so verify with the department before you register for the test.

Montana State University IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

India is not on Montana State University’s country-level English exemption list, but Indian applicants can still be exempted from IELTS or TOEFL through one of these pathways:

  • IB diploma from an IB World School counts as a full exemption.
  • IGCSE O-Level English with a grade of C or above, or GCSE English at a score of 4 or higher, qualifies.
  • Two years at a US high school with a grade of B or better in English coursework qualifies.
  • Two full semesters or 24 semester credits at a US regionally accredited institution, including two college-level English courses with a C or better, qualifies.
  • A completed bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate from a listed English-medium country (UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and others) qualifies for the graduate track.

The Office of International Programs reserves the right to still request a test score even after an exemption, so keep an IELTS or Duolingo slot booked as backup.

Montana State University PhD Programs and Funding

Montana State University offers doctoral study across 35 fields, with heavy Indian-student presence in Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Ecology and Environmental Sciences, and Materials Science. Admission is department-driven and depends on faculty match, not just marks.

Montana State University PhD Entry Requirements

All doctoral applicants need a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with a B average (3.0/4.0 GPA) or better, IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80, three letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. Most programs also expect a research proposal or statement of research interests aligned to a named faculty member. GRE is required by some departments and waived by others.

Montana State University PhD Assistantships and Stipends

Most PhD students at MSU are funded through Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) or Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs), which cover a tuition waiver plus a monthly stipend. Departments also nominate students for internal awards, including the PhD Dissertation Completion Award for final-term students. Assistantship availability varies by department, so raise funding in your first email to the faculty you want to work with.

Insider note: Reach out to two or three potential advisors at least six months before the department deadline. A confirmed research fit is worth more than a marginally higher GRE score at MSU.

Montana State University Application Process

The application flow is short: create an account on the portal, pay the fee, submit your transcripts and English test, and upload the supplementary documents. Undergraduate and graduate files go through different portals and different offices.

  1. Create your account. Undergraduate applicants use the MSU UG Admissions Portal. Graduate applicants use the MSU Graduate ApplyWeb portal and pick the department at signup.
  2. Pay the application fee. Pay the application fee of USD 38 (around INR 3,593) online for undergraduate (USD 30 by paper) or USD 60 (around INR 5,673) for graduate, in US currency. The fee is non-refundable and cannot be waived.
  3. Submit proof of English. Send scores directly from ETS (TOEFL), IELTS, or Duolingo using the MSU institution code 4488 for score routing.
  4. Submit transcripts. Send Class XII marksheets and passing certificate for freshman entry, or Bachelor’s transcripts for graduate entry. Non-English transcripts need a certified English translation alongside the original.
  5. Complete department-specific items. Graduate applicants add three letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and any writing samples, portfolios, or research proposals the department requires.
  6. Financial certification and I-20 issuance. Once admitted, submit a signed International Financial Certificate and a bank statement showing at least USD 54,220 for UG or USD 46,838 for graduate. These are required before MSU issues the I-20.

Montana State University Admission Decisions and Timeline

MSU reviews files as soon as they are complete. International decisions and admissions packets, including the I-20, are sent electronically. Undergraduate applicants typically hear within four to six weeks of the file being complete, and graduate applicants hear once the department has finished its review round.

Montana State University Bozeman Documents Required

Keep every document ready as a colour PDF scan before you open the portal. MSU accepts unofficial scanned copies for the admission decision, but official documents must reach the university before you register for courses.

  • Colour scan of passport name and photo page, and dependent passports if applicable.
  • Class XII marksheet and passing certificate for freshman entry, plus Class X for verification.
  • Bachelor’s transcripts and degree certificate for graduate entry, sent front and back.
  • Certified English translation of any transcript not originally in English.
  • English test score report (IELTS, TOEFL iBT, Duolingo, or PTE Academic for UG).
  • Statement of Purpose tailored to the department for graduate applicants.
  • Three letters of recommendation from professors or supervisors for graduate applicants.
  • CV or resume covering academic history, projects, publications, and work experience.
  • International Financial Certificate signed by sponsor plus a bank statement on official letterhead dated within one year of the intake start.
  • Portfolio for MArch or design applicants, submitted through the department’s specified route.

Before you apply: Fraudulent documents lead to automatic denial and a two-year ban on reapplication. Get your Bachelor’s mark conversion done by a WES-style evaluator only if the department asks for it.

Montana State University Acceptance Rate

Montana State University does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Third-party estimates based on Common Data Set filings and competitive-intake program patterns place it at around 73 percent for the incoming Fall 2026 class, an access-focused profile compared with US flagship publics that admit under 30 percent.

What the Acceptance Rate Means for Indian Applicants at Montana State University

The high headline rate does not mean automatic admission. Indian freshmen still need a 2.5/4.0 GPA and IELTS 6.0, and graduate applicants still need a 3.0/4.0 GPA. Files below the floor are denied even in a high-admit environment.

Montana State University Program-Level Selectivity

Selectivity is tighter inside popular Master’s programs, especially Computer Science, Data Science, and MArch, where faculty capacity is limited. Doctoral admissions are the most selective route because they hinge on a faculty advisor confirming funding before the department issues an offer.

Insider note: An access-focused acceptance rate makes MSU a strong second-choice safety school for Indian applicants targeting mid-band US publics. Pair it with two more selective picks to spread your options.

USA F-1 Student Visa for Montana State University

Indian students admitted to Montana State University enter the US on the F-1 non-immigrant student visa. MSU issues the I-20 (a US government form confirming your admission and financial capacity) after your Financial Certificate and passport copy are on file. You then book the visa interview at a US Consulate in India.

The F-1 process runs in four steps: pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around INR 33,093), complete the DS-160 online form (fee USD 185, around INR 17,492), book the visa interview slot at Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad, and attend the interview with your I-20, admission letter, financial proof, academic documents, and passport. Ties-to-home evidence matters. Bring proof of intent to return, such as family assets, job offers, or a parental business.

Planning note: Once in the US, report in person to MSU’s International Student Orientation before classes start. Skipping orientation invalidates your I-20 and creates SEVIS compliance issues that are painful to reverse.

Tips and Application Checklist for Montana State University

The steps and tips below are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Montana State University and the university’s own timing guidance for international files.

  • Start eight to nine months before the deadline. IELTS bookings, transcript attestation, and consulate slots each take four to six weeks in metro India.
  • Target Fall over Spring or Summer. The primary Fall intake carries the widest program menu, the largest assistantship pool, and the best housing options.
  • Email two or three faculty for PhD entry. Do this before you touch the ApplyWeb portal. Funded PhD offers hinge on advisor commitment.
  • Book the SEVIS fee payment in advance of your DS-160 form. The receipt is a hard requirement at the consulate interview.
  • Request transcripts eight weeks before the deadline. Indian university offices routinely need repeat visits for sealed, attested copies.
  • Prepare a bank statement that lists the account in your sponsor’s name, dated within one year of your program start, on official letterhead with a manager’s signature.
  • Register for the English test twice if your first score sits within one band of the floor. Retake windows can shift your Fall plans by a full year.
  • Complete the Confirmation and Housing forms within two weeks of receiving the admission packet. On-campus housing at MSU fills quickly for Fall.

Montana State University rewards early filers, faculty-matched PhD candidates, and applicants who read the department page before the university-wide one. Meet the 2.5 or 3.0 GPA floor, pick the Fall intake, and file at least four months ahead.

Overview

Tuition costs & proximity. The tuition for in-state students is relatively at a low price. It was a no brainer to opt for an option that was less expensive than the competing schools. All while being just as established academically. The proximity to my hometown is relatively close as I enjoy going home every now and again.
