The QS World ranking trajectory keeps University of Memphis inside the 1201-1400 band across recent cycles, comparable with regional US public research universities that draw large Indian student cohorts. Its US News National position moved from 266 in the 2025 edition to 273 in the 2026 edition, a shift reflecting cohort competition rather than a change in institutional strength. Applicants weighing options may want to compare with University of Mississippi for a same-region peer read.
Tennessee’s out-of-state tuition remains among the more affordable American public research options. The Graduate Non-Resident Merit Scholarship offers a USD 4,200 annual waiver on out-of-state fees for qualifying international graduate students. Indian students eyeing wider business options in the US can also review top MBA programs in the USA before finalising the shortlist, and should factor F-1 visa processing timelines plus Memphis’s low cost-of-living into the total investment calculation.

University of Memphis Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants must meet minimum academic thresholds, submit English proficiency scores, and provide a certificate of finance demonstrating funding.
For postgraduate applicants:
- Academic: Four-year Indian bachelor’s degree with minimum 2.75/4.0 CGPA for Master’s admission (approximately 55 percent) and 3.0/4.0 for Doctoral admission (approximately 60 percent); Fogelman and STEM departments may set higher benchmarks
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 80 (0-120 legacy scale, applicable to tests taken before January 2026; verify updated 1-6 band minimum at official site), IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, PTE Academic 59, or Duolingo English Test 110
- Credential evaluation: WES or ECE course-by-course evaluation of Indian transcripts required for most departments
- Standardised tests: GRE (typically 310 combined with 150+ verbal and quantitative) or GMAT required for many Fogelman and engineering programmes; individual departments confirm current test policy
For undergraduate applicants:
- Academic: Class 12 (CBSE, ISC, or state board) with minimum 60 percent aggregate; specific subject prerequisites for Nursing, Engineering, and Business majors
- English proficiency: IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 79 for most undergraduate programmes; Nursing may require IELTS 6.5
Key insight: The 2.75 CGPA minimum for Master’s admission is lower than most US mid-tier publics, but Fogelman College’s MBA and MS Business Analytics programmes push the threshold to 3.0/4.0 and typically expect a GMAT score above 550 for a competitive review.
University of Memphis Acceptance Rate 2027
The overall undergraduate acceptance rate at University of Memphis sits at around 72 percent, placing it in the moderately selective band for US publics. This rate is widely reported across independent education databases and reflects the university’s mission as an accessible urban research institution.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2025-2026 | Around 72 percent (estimated figure) | Stable |
| 2024-2025 | Around 72 percent (estimated figure) | Stable |
Graduate programme acceptance rates vary widely by department. Fogelman MBA and MS Business Analytics screen more selectively based on GMAT and prior work experience, while MS Information Systems and MS Computer Science offer larger admitted cohorts for qualifying Indian applicants.
Reality check: A 72 percent institutional rate does not translate to easy admission for competitive graduate programmes. Indian applicants to Fogelman or engineering departments should treat department-level scrutiny as the binding constraint rather than the university-wide figure.

Health insurance is a mandatory add-on estimated at USD 2,000 to 2,500 per year and is not included in tuition.
University of Memphis Campus, Facilities and Student Life
The main campus occupies 1,160 acres in the University District of Memphis, a mid-sized Southern city known for music heritage and a growing logistics economy anchored by FedEx headquarters.
- Location and transport: Six kilometres east of downtown Memphis; served by MATA campus shuttle and public bus routes connecting to the city centre and Memphis International Airport
- Housing: On-campus rooms cost USD 6,500 to 9,000 per academic year; housing is guaranteed for first-year undergraduates but not for graduate students, who typically live off-campus
- Research and academic facilities: FedEx Institute of Technology anchors interdisciplinary research; the University Libraries system holds 1.5 million volumes across four branches
- Indian student community: Active Indian Student Association organising Diwali, Holi, and Independence Day events; several vegetarian and Indian grocery options within a five-kilometre radius of campus
What Indian students say: The campus feels safe within its official boundaries, and the international student services office proactively supports F-1 status and OPT documentation. Off-campus rent is a genuine advantage over comparable US cities, though students without a car find local transit limited beyond the campus corridor.
University of Memphis Scholarships 2027
University of Memphis funds a small number of institution-wide scholarships open to international students, plus department-level graduate assistantships that combine tuition waivers with a stipend.
| Scholarship | Type | Award Value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate Non-Resident Merit Scholarship | Merit | USD 4,200 per academic year (INR 4.01 lakh) | Newly admitted F-1/J-1 graduate students, 3.25/4.0 GPA or 310 GRE (150 plus verbal and quantitative), non-Tennessee resident | Rolling with admission |
| International Undergraduate Merit Scholarship | Merit | Waives difference between out-of-state and international tuition rate | Newly admitted F-1/J-1 undergraduate students on campus | 1 December (for admitted students) |
Departmental Teaching Assistantships and Graduate Assistantships offer a full tuition waiver plus a monthly stipend for qualifying graduate students; award decisions are made by academic departments and are separate from the scholarships above. External Indian applicants may also apply to Inlaks Scholarships and JN Tata Endowment for supplementary funding. [Source: University of Memphis Office of Scholarships]
Planning note: The Graduate Non-Resident Merit Scholarship is awarded automatically to eligible admitted students, but graduate assistantships require a separate departmental application, typically submitted at the same time as the programme application. Indian applicants who miss the assistantship window often forfeit the strongest funding pathway.

Subject-level performance in THE World University Rankings 2026 places Psychology at 301-400 and Education Studies at 401-500, marking these as the strongest departments for Indian applicants targeting research-oriented programmes.
Key insight: For Indian applicants, the US News National ranking carries more weight than QS World for domestic US employer recognition. F-1 to H-1B conversion outcomes in Memphis correlate more with programme reputation (MS Information Systems, MPH) than with the university’s global rank.

University of Memphis vs Peer Universities
The peer set below compares University of Memphis with two regional Tennessee publics and one Southern regional peer, on the metrics Indian applicants weigh most: ranking, admit rate, tuition, and career outcomes.
| University | QS World Rank 2027 | Acceptance Rate | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD/INR) | Median Salary (USD/INR) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Memphis | 1201-1400 | Around 72 percent | USD 16,452 / INR 15.71 lakh | Regional US public market median (NA) | Affordable Tennessee R1 public; strong MS Information Systems and MPH |
| University of Tennessee Knoxville | NA (verify at QS) | NA (verify at official) | NA (verify at official) | NA | Tennessee state flagship with stronger research footprint and higher out-of-state tuition |
| University of Mississippi | NA (verify at QS) | NA (verify at official) | NA (verify at official) | NA | Southern regional public with a liberal arts emphasis and larger UG cohort |
| Middle Tennessee State University | Not ranked in QS | NA (verify at official) | NA (verify at official) | NA | Nashville-region regional public focused on teaching and applied programmes |
University of Memphis stands out among these Tennessee and Southern regional publics for its R1 research classification combined with the lowest published out-of-state tuition among the peer set. Its FedEx Institute of Technology and MS Information Systems track give it a defensible niche for Indian graduate applicants targeting analytics roles in the US logistics and healthcare sectors.
University of Memphis suits the Indian applicant who wants US public-university credentials with an affordable total investment, strong department-level scholarships, and an OPT-friendly city with low cost of living. The total two-year graduate investment of INR 60 to 65 lakh (tuition plus living) is offset by median post-graduation salaries of USD 55,000 to 65,000 (INR 52.53 to 62.08 lakh), delivering payback within two to three post-degree years for successful OPT and H-1B pathways.
For Indian graduate applicants, the university’s F-1 to OPT and STEM extension pipeline supported by the study in USA guide gateway, alongside proactive International Student Services and an active Indian Student Association, materially eases the transition into a US career. The Graduate Non-Resident Merit Scholarship and departmental assistantships further compress the effective cost for admitted candidates.
University of Memphis is not the strongest fit for applicants prioritising global brand recognition, coastal-city networks, or MBA outcomes at the top of the US market. Candidates optimising for global rankings and elite MBA salaries should consider higher-ranked Tennessee or Southeastern flagships such as University of Tennessee Knoxville as a realistic alternative peer.
University of Memphis FAQs
Ques. Does University of Memphis waive the GRE for Indian graduate applicants?
Ans. GRE waivers at University of Memphis are decided at the departmental level rather than centrally. Fogelman College of Business commonly waives the GMAT or GRE for applicants with strong undergraduate CGPA above 3.3/4.0 or five plus years of work experience. Engineering and Computer Science departments may waive GRE for applicants from accredited Indian institutions with distinction, but the request must be filed directly with the department during application. There is no automatic waiver policy university-wide.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time on campus during their degree?
Ans. Indian students on F-1 visa can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during regular semesters and up to 40 hours per week during official breaks, per US federal regulations. On-campus roles include library assistantships, dining services, research assistantships, and administrative positions in academic offices. Off-campus employment is restricted to Curricular Practical Training tied to programme requirements or Optional Practical Training after 12 months of full-time enrolment.
Ques. What is the application fee for University of Memphis for Indian students?
Ans. The undergraduate application fee is USD 50 (approximately INR 4,775) and the graduate application fee is USD 60 (approximately INR 5,730) for 2026-2027 applications. The fee is non-refundable and payable by international credit or debit card during online submission. Fee waivers are limited and typically available only to applicants participating in specific US-based recruitment programmes, so Indian applicants applying from India should plan to pay the standard fee.
Ques. Are Indian education loans accepted by University of Memphis for I-20 issuance?
Ans. University of Memphis accepts sanctioned Indian education loans as proof of funding for I-20 issuance, provided the loan sanction letter clearly states the applicant’s name, total sanctioned amount in USD equivalent, tenure, and disbursement schedule. Major Indian lenders including SBI, HDFC Credila, Avanse, ICICI, and Auxilo have historically been recognised. The sanctioned amount must cover at least the first-year cost of attendance shown on the Certificate of Finance.
Ques. Which English test does University of Memphis prefer for Indian applicants?
Ans. University of Memphis accepts TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, Duolingo English Test, and iTEP for international admissions with equivalent minimum thresholds. IELTS is the most commonly submitted test by Indian applicants due to widespread test-centre availability across metros. Duolingo is accepted at a minimum of 110 and offers the fastest turnaround, making it a practical fallback for applicants running short on time before deadlines.
Ques. How long does OPT last for graduates from University of Memphis?
Ans. Optional Practical Training grants up to 12 months of US work authorisation after completing a degree at University of Memphis for all F-1 graduates. Graduates from designated STEM programmes, including MS Information Systems, MS Computer Science, and most engineering degrees, qualify for an additional 24-month STEM OPT extension, bringing total post-degree work authorisation to 36 months. The STEM extension requires an E-Verify enrolled employer and formal reapplication before the initial OPT ends.
Ques. Does University of Memphis offer conditional admission for Indian applicants below English minimums?
Ans. Yes, University of Memphis offers conditional admission for applicants who meet academic requirements but fall short of English proficiency minimums. Conditional admits complete Intensive English for Internationals coursework at the campus English as a Second Language centre before matriculating into their degree programme. This pathway requires a separate I-20 for the language component and extends the overall US stay by one to two semesters, so budgeting and visa planning must account for it.
Ques. Which credential evaluation service does University of Memphis recognise for Indian transcripts?
Ans. University of Memphis accepts WES, ECE, and other NACES member evaluations for Indian academic transcripts. WES course-by-course evaluation is the most widely accepted format for graduate admissions and is required by Fogelman College and most engineering departments. Indian applicants should start the WES process at least ten weeks before the application deadline, as document verification from Indian universities and boards typically takes six to eight weeks.

The fee was standard and has changed this year. The last online fees were 1000$ more than regular on-campus classes starting fall 2019 the fees will b the same. But the cost is still too much. Fees are about 5-7k per semester. Not much scholarship is offered nor financial aid.
Overview
The large campus, but small class sizes. The ratio of students to the professor was comfortable for being able to network and make connections. The class times were easily manageable. Most importantly the tuition was cheaper than my home state.
Fees
It does mention online course fees which no longer exists and the calculator also factors in transportation and other needs.
