IIT Goa's B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is a 4-year, full-time undergraduate programme offered at the institute's transit campus in Farmagudi, Ponda, Goa. Established in 2016 and mentored by IIT Bombay, IIT Goa is ranked #31 in NIRF Engineering 2025. The CSE programme covers core areas including algorithms, data structures, operating systems, computer networks, machine learning, and software engineering, with electives spanning AI, data science, and systems. Total seat intake for B.Tech CSE is 45 seats (including supernumerary seats for female candidates). The total programme fees for a General category student (family income above Rs. 5 LPA) is approximately Rs. 10.91 lakh over 4 years (excluding mess charges), making it one of the most affordable premier engineering programmes in India. Admission is strictly through JEE Advanced followed by JoSAA counselling, and the programme is popular for its strong CSE placement record, IIT brand value, and unique Goa campus experience.

Admissions for the 2026 batch are upcoming. JEE Advanced 2026 is scheduled for May 17, 2026, and the JoSAA 2026 counselling process is tentatively set to begin on June 2, 2026. Registration for JoSAA is expected to open around June 10-12, 2026, with seat allotment rounds running through July 2026. Classes for the new batch typically commence in the last week of July 2026.

IIT Goa B.Tech CSE FAQs

Ques. IIT Goa CSE vs. a lower branch at an older IIT – which should I choose?

Ans. This is one of the most debated questions among JEE Advanced qualifiers. If your rank allows you to get CSE at IIT Goa, it is generally considered a strong choice over a non-CS branch at an older IIT, given the strong placement demand for CSE graduates. However, if you can get a core branch (CSE/EE) at IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, or IIT Delhi, those institutes have a more established placement ecosystem and alumni network. The decision ultimately depends on your rank, branch preference, and career goals.

Ques. Is IIT Goa's temporary campus a concern for students?

Ans. IIT Goa currently operates from a transit campus at Farmagudi, Ponda, which is a functional campus with hostels, labs, a library, sports facilities, and a health centre. While the permanent 250-acre campus is under construction, the transit campus is well-equipped and students report a positive campus experience. The location in Goa also offers a unique lifestyle advantage. However, students should be aware that infrastructure may not be at par with older, more established IITs.

Ques. What is the branch change policy at IIT Goa for CSE?

Ans. Branch change to CSE is possible after the first two semesters, but it is highly competitive. Students from other branches (EE, ME, MnC) can apply for a branch change to CSE if they have no backlogs, have completed all prescribed credits, and have an SPI of at least 8.00 (for General/OBC/EWS) or 7.00 (for SC/ST/PwD) in the second semester. The number of seats available for branch change is limited (up to 10% additional seats plus any vacant seats). Merely meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee a branch change.

Ques. How are internships at IIT Goa for CSE students?

Ans. Internship opportunities at IIT Goa for CSE students have been growing steadily. Companies like Texas Instruments, MathWorks, ARM, Google, Adobe, and several startups have offered summer internships. Many students also secure research internships at IITs, IISc, and international universities. Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs) from internships have become an increasingly important placement channel. Students are advised to start building their coding portfolio and applying for internships from the second year itself.

Ques. What is the JEE Advanced closing rank for IIT Goa CSE in 2025?

Ans. The JoSAA 2025 Round 6 closing rank for IIT Goa B.Tech CSE (General category, Gender-Neutral pool) was approximately 6,600. For OBC-NCL, the closing rank was approximately 2,376; for SC, approximately 1,202; and for ST, approximately 603. These ranks are indicative and may vary in 2026 depending on the number of qualified candidates and seat matrix changes.

Ques. Does IIT Goa offer any loan or EMI facility for fee payment?

Ans. IIT Goa does not officially offer an EMI facility. However, fees are collected semester-wise (twice a year), which naturally spreads the payment over 8 instalments across 4 years. Students can also avail of education loans from nationalised banks under the Vidya Lakshmi portal or other bank schemes, which typically cover tuition fees, hostel charges, and other academic expenses. SC/ST/PwD students and economically weaker students are largely covered by fee waivers and scholarships, significantly reducing the financial burden.

IIT Goa: 1 Answered Question

Should I go for IIT Goa Electrical or NIT Kurukshetra CSE even though I have interest in CSE?

Akriti Banerjeelives in New Delhi

My uncle is a professor of Mathematics at IIT Delhi. According to him, one should prioritize the subject/ branch instead of the college while making such decisions.

You have an interest in CSE, as mentioned by you. In that case, you should go for the best college that is offering you CSE. An ‘IIT’ tag is definitely worthy and IITs have their own advantages. However, it will boil down to nothing if you have no interest in your branch.

But, I also wish to make it clear that NIT Kurukshetra does not offer CSE (Computer Science Engineering). Instead, it offers Computer Engineering (CE). The former revolves around Software, while the latter pays more attention to Hardware.

Try to find out more about CE, and then make your final decision. If you decide that CE is a better choice for you, go for NIT Kurukshetra. Otherwise, choose the other option.

You can also look for some other good colleges that offer CSE.

About cost, as we know each Iit has the same fees i.e. 12 to 15 lakh for four years but those who have a family income of less than 5 lakh benefited with remission where the fees are reduced almost to half the total amount. And being a government college if you compare it with private colleges you will feel that you are studying for literally no cost. Various private and government scholarships are provided to students wherein the remaining fees also get waived. And if you have exceptionally well cpi then keep in mind every funding organisation has an eye on you. The same means for companies as well, just give your best rest to them. Since I am in the first year I don't have much information about stipends but I have heard that you get around 30 to 40k stipends from seniors
