University of Calcutta M.Sc Genetics And Plant Breeding: Fees 2026, Course Duration, Dates, Eligibility

Ans. Candidates must hold B.Sc. (Agriculture) with at least 55 percent marks, or B.Sc. Honours in Botany or Chemistry with at least 50 percent marks from the University of Calcutta or an equivalent university. CU B.Sc. (Agriculture) graduates are admitted on merit without an entrance test.

Ans. CU B.Sc. (Agriculture) graduates are admitted directly on merit. Non-CU Agriculture graduates must clear a 100-mark MCQ test conducted by the Institute of Agricultural Science with 40 percent qualifying marks. Counselling follows to assign seats.

The two-year programme covers plant genetics, cytogenetics, population genetics, hybridisation, mutation breeding, molecular markers, marker-assisted selection, plant biotechnology, biometrics, and seed science. A research dissertation at the Institute of Agricultural Science completes the programme.

Ans. Graduates can apply for Junior Research Fellow posts at ICAR institutes, state agricultural universities, and the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources. Other paths include plant breeding roles in seed companies and state research stations. The degree qualifies students for ICAR JRF and NET examinations.
