Comprehensive Review of MSc Life Sciences in Presidency University, Kolkata.

Dislikes

Attendance above 75 percent is mandatory to appear for exams
The duration of practical can be of 4-5 hours at a strech sometimes apart from Theory classes

It is an excellent University, that provides Bachelor's to Masters to PhD and Post Doctoral Studeies in Kolkata. The Faculties and Infrastructure is excellent, The fees for each semester for MSc is less than ?4500 & Hostel seperate for Boys and Girls are available. Seniors are also very supportive, sports and co currilcular activities are also promoted, also labs are well equipped and frequently seminars (national and international) are taken. Large Campus, one in College Street, Kolkata and another one in New Town.

Why Presidency is still presidential: A look into the dream institution.

Expenses of studying is very less, in fact much lesser than several state-run and central-run institutions. The entire fees for the two-year master's course in life sciences amounts to less than 10,000 INR.

DLS includes demonstration based practical in its curriculum and not hands on practical classes. Being a student of life sciences, I feel this is something that should be modified.
Curriculum focuses a lot on reading from research papers. While this has its pros, it has its cons as well from examination point of view, as often this becomes challenging for students to remember all nitty-gritty details.

Fee is charged for every semester. The per semester fee amounts to Rs. 1335/- for the academic year 2023-24. Now this includes the tuition fee, laboratory fee as well as the examination fees. The initial admission fee charged in the year 2023 was Rs. 4300/-. This amount had to paid in two installments, namely the seat confirmation fee (paid during online counselling), an amount of Rupees 3,300/- and the final installment of Rs. 1000, which was paid after the physical reporting. The admission fee was inclusive of tuition fees for the first semester, laboratory fees, library charges, development fees, etc., but excepting the examination fees for the first semester. In the first semester, the examination fees, an amount of Rs. 375/- was charged separately, during the examination form fill up.

The syllabus is too enormous and it would be great if it's compartmentalised into two or more papers

The tuition fees is about INR 10,000 for the entire duration of the program i.e, two years including all examination and admisison fees. You need to pay a non-refundable INR 500 to appear for the PUMDET exam. Theese fees don't change as such and have been the same since the last few years. There will be an excursion during semester II as a part of the Ecology paper. It's uausally compulsory and carries weight age. One needs to pay the excurisik fees at that time if he/she/they choose(s) to go. During my time they have asked for INR 10,000 all inclusive. Hostel accommodation is Available for students who live far enough at a nominal rate of around INR 200/month. I, myself applied for the SVMCM scholarship. Anyone whose family income is below INR 2,50,000 is eligible to do so and is entitled to a scholarship of INR 30,000 annually for two years. The miminal academic requirements can be checked from the SVMCM portal. Girls can apply for the K3 Kanyashree scholarship by the WB Government.
