TNAU Ph.D. (Environmental Science) FAQs
Ques. Is there an entrance exam for Ph.D. admission at TNAU, and what is the exam pattern?
Ans. Yes, TNAU conducts a physical-mode entrance examination for Ph.D. admissions. The exam is for 100 marks and consists of three components: subject-specific questions (75 marks), General Agriculture (15 marks), and Aptitude (10 marks). The exam is conducted at TNAU Coimbatore, and candidates must be present in person. There is no provision for online or remote examination. Candidates from outside Tamil Nadu can alternatively qualify through the ICAR AICE-JRF/SRF (Ph.D.) exam and seek admission through ICAR counselling, bypassing the TNAU entrance exam.
Ques. Can a student with an M.Sc. in Environmental Science from a regular (non-agricultural) university apply for the Ph.D. programme at TNAU?
Ans. This is a common query. TNAU's eligibility criteria specify that only candidates who have studied at State Agricultural Universities (SAUs), ICAR Institutes, Central Agricultural Universities, or Government-Aided Agricultural Colleges are eligible to apply. Candidates with M.Sc. Environmental Science from general universities (e.g., Anna University, Madras University) are typically not eligible unless their institution is specifically recognized by TNAU. It is strongly advised to verify eligibility directly with the TNAU PG School (pgadmission@tnau.ac.in) before applying.
Ques. What is the research focus of the Ph.D. in Environmental Science at TNAU, and are there funded research projects available?
Ans. The department is actively engaged in research on pollution monitoring and remediation, carbon sequestration in agroecosystems, greenhouse gas emission management, bioremediation of industrial effluent-contaminated soils, phytoremediation of polluted water bodies, and coastal disaster management. The department runs several funded projects from agencies like DST, DBT, ICAR, and TNSCST. Ph.D. scholars admitted through ICAR JRF/SRF receive a monthly fellowship, and many scholars also get associated with ongoing funded projects, which provides additional research support and exposure.
Ques. How many seats are available for Ph.D. in Environmental Science at TNAU, and what is the competition like?
Ans. The seat intake for Ph.D. in Environmental Science at TNAU is limited, typically around 5-8 seats per year (subject to availability of faculty guides and funded positions). The competition is significant, as TNAU is one of the top agricultural universities in India (NIRF Rank 6 in 2025 in Agriculture category). Seats are distributed across Tamil Nadu state quota (merit-based through TNAU entrance exam) and ICAR quota (30% of seats filled through ICAR counselling). SC/ST/OBC reservations apply as per Tamil Nadu Government norms.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing Ph.D. in Environmental Science from TNAU?
Ans. Graduates of this programme have secured diverse and prestigious positions. Career paths include: Scientist positions at DRDO, DST, and ICAR through the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) exam; Environmental Scientist roles at Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and State Pollution Control Boards; Assistant Professor/Associate Professor positions at agricultural universities and colleges; Senior Research Fellow and Project Associate roles at national research institutes; and international academic positions (alumni have been placed at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman; Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia; and Newcastle University, Australia). UGC-NET qualified graduates can directly apply for Assistant Professor positions.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for Ph.D. students at TNAU, and what are the living expenses?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at TNAU is available but is not guaranteed and is subject to availability. The university has separate hostels for boys and girls on the main campus in Coimbatore. Hostel infrastructure charges of Rs. 1,815 per semester are included in the semester fee. Mess/food charges are additional, ranging from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 5,000 per month, payable separately. Ph.D. scholars receiving ICAR JRF/SRF fellowship (Rs. 37,000/month) or UGC-NET JRF fellowship find the living expenses quite manageable. Students who do not get hostel accommodation may need to arrange private PG accommodation near the campus.
