TNAU M.Tech Renewable Energy FAQs
Ques. Is B.Tech EEE (Electrical and Electronics Engineering) eligible for M.Tech Renewable Energy Engineering at TNAU?
Ans. Yes, but with an important clarification. The eligible degree for M.Tech Renewable Energy Engineering at TNAU is B.Tech (EEE) which here refers to B.Tech in Energy and Environmental Engineering (offered by TNAU itself), not the conventional B.Tech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The official TNAU PG Information Brochure 2026-27 lists B.Tech (Ag.Engg.), B.Tech (EEE - Energy and Environmental Engineering), and B.E. (Ag.) as the qualifying degrees. Candidates with conventional Electrical and Electronics Engineering degrees from non-agricultural universities should verify their eligibility directly with TNAU before applying.
Ques. What is the difference between the Coimbatore and Kumulur campuses for this programme?
Ans. M.Tech Renewable Energy Engineering is offered at both AEC&RI, Coimbatore (main campus) and AEC&RI, Kumulur, Trichy. Both campuses are constituent colleges of TNAU. The allotment of campus is done by the university based on merit and availability of seats; candidates cannot choose their preferred campus. The Coimbatore campus is the main campus with more research facilities, while Kumulur is a newer campus. The degree awarded is the same from both campuses.
Ques. Does TNAU conduct its own entrance exam for M.Tech admission, or is ICAR AIEEA (PG) the only route?
Ans. TNAU conducts its own PG entrance examination for Tamil Nadu domicile candidates. This is a physical, offline exam held at TNAU, Coimbatore, consisting of 100 MCQs (75 marks from the subject, 15 marks General Agriculture, 10 marks Aptitude) for one hour. This route fills the state quota seats (70% of total seats). ICAR AIEEA (PG) conducted by NTA is the route for out-of-state candidates and fills the ICAR quota seats (30% of total seats). Both routes lead to the same degree programme.
Ques. What research areas are available for thesis work in M.Tech Renewable Energy Engineering at TNAU?
Ans. The Department of Renewable Energy Engineering at TNAU offers a wide range of thesis topics. Key research areas include biohydrogen production from agricultural residues, solar photovoltaic systems for agricultural applications, biogas reactor design and optimisation, biofuel production from agricultural and forest crop feedstocks, wind energy utilisation in rural areas, and energy auditing of agro-industries. Students are also encouraged to collaborate with other research departments or companies and can undertake internships at national or international institutes. The department has sophisticated instruments to support experimental research work.
Ques. What are the career prospects after M.Tech Renewable Energy Engineering from TNAU?
Ans. Graduates have strong career prospects in India's rapidly growing renewable energy sector. They can work with solar energy companies (NTPC Solar, Adani Green, Tata Power Solar), wind energy firms, bioenergy and biogas companies, and government agencies like MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable Energy), TANGEDCO, and IREDA. ICAR institutes such as CIAE Bhopal and CIPHET also recruit graduates for research positions. Many graduates pursue PhD programmes with ICAR JRF/SRF fellowships. Faculty positions in agricultural engineering colleges are another popular career path.
Ques. Can I apply for both M.Tech Farm Machinery and Power Engineering and M.Tech Renewable Energy Engineering at TNAU simultaneously?
Ans. Yes. TNAU allows candidates to apply for up to two subjects in Masters programmes. A separate application fee must be paid for each subject. If applying for two subjects, the total application fee is Rs. 3,100 (OC/BC/BCM/MBC/DNC) or Rs. 3,050 (SC/SCA/ST). Candidates who apply for two subjects must appear in the entrance examination for all subjects continuously on the same day. However, if selected for both, the candidate must choose one programme for admission. This flexibility allows candidates to maximise their chances of securing a seat at TNAU.
