TNAU M.Tech FAQs
Ques. Is the TNAU M.Tech in Processing and Food Engineering the same as M.Tech in Post Harvest Processing and Food Engineering?
Ans. Yes, these refer to the same programme. TNAU officially calls it M.Tech in Processing and Food Engineering under the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering. The programme covers post-harvest handling, food processing, preservation, packaging, and value-addition of agricultural commodities. The course is offered at the Department of Food Process Engineering, AEC and RI, Coimbatore campus only.
Ques. Do I need to appear for GATE to get admission to this M.Tech programme at TNAU?
Ans. GATE is not mandatory for admission to TNAU's M.Tech programme through the university's own quota. TNAU conducts its own PG Entrance Examination for Tamil Nadu state candidates. However, if you wish to apply through the ICAR-AIEEA (PG) national quota, a valid GATE score in the relevant paper (AG - Agricultural Engineering) is required. ICAR quota seats are separate from the state quota seats at TNAU.
Ques. What is the seat intake for M.Tech Processing and Food Engineering at TNAU, and how competitive is the admission?
Ans. The seat intake for this programme is limited (approximately 10-12 seats per batch), making it quite competitive. Seats are distributed across various reservation categories as per Tamil Nadu government norms (OC: 31%, BC: 26.5%, MBC/DNC: 20%, SC: 15%, SCA: 3%, ST: 1%). Additionally, up to 20% of seats can be filled under the self-financing (supernumerary) mode. Given the limited seats and the reputation of TNAU, candidates are advised to prepare thoroughly for the entrance examination.
Ques. Can students from non-agricultural engineering backgrounds (e.g., B.Tech Food Technology from a private university) apply for this programme?
Ans. Eligibility is restricted to candidates who have studied at State Agricultural Universities, ICAR Institutes, Central Agricultural Universities, or Government-Aided Agricultural Colleges. Graduates from private universities or deemed universities offering B.Tech Food Technology are generally not eligible unless their institution is specifically recognized. The qualifying degree must be B.Tech (Ag.Engg.), B.Tech (FPE), B.Tech (Food Technology), or B.E. (Ag.) from an eligible institution. Candidates are advised to verify their institution's eligibility with TNAU's School of Post Graduate Studies before applying.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing M.Tech Processing and Food Engineering from TNAU?
Ans. Graduates from this programme find opportunities in leading FMCG companies (Nestle, ITC, Britannia, Amul, etc.) in R&D, QA/QC, production management, and logistics roles. Government sector opportunities include FSSAI (Food Safety Officer), Aavin (Technical Officer), nationalized banks (Project Manager for agri-loans), and teaching positions in agricultural universities. The degree also opens doors to PhD programmes at TNAU and other agricultural universities, which is a common path for students interested in academic and research careers. Entrepreneurship in food processing and value-addition is another avenue actively encouraged by TNAU.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for M.Tech students at TNAU, and what are the living expenses?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at TNAU is available but limited, and students cannot claim it as a matter of right. The university provides accommodation to the extent possible, and allocation is based on availability. The hostel infrastructure charge of Rs. 1,815 per semester is included in the regular fee structure for all students (whether or not they stay in the hostel). The actual hostel accommodation fee (cheapest option) is approximately Rs. 16,060 per year, and meal plan charges are separate. Students who do not get hostel accommodation will need to arrange private accommodation near the Coimbatore campus, where rental costs typically range from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 8,000 per month depending on the type of accommodation.
