TNAU M.Sc Sericulture FAQs
Ques. Is B.Sc. Sericulture the only eligible degree for M.Sc. Sericulture at TNAU, or can B.Sc. Agriculture graduates also apply?
Ans. As per the TNAU PG Admission Information Brochure 2025-26, only candidates holding B.Sc. (Sericulture) or B.Sc. (Hons.) Sericulture from a recognised SAU/ICAR/Central Agricultural University/Government-Aided Agricultural College are eligible for M.Sc. (Ag.) in Sericulture at TNAU. B.Sc. Agriculture graduates are NOT eligible for this specific programme. This is a strict eligibility criterion and is verified during document scrutiny before the hall ticket is issued. Candidates with a B.Sc. Agriculture background who are interested in sericulture-related research may explore other M.Sc. programmes at TNAU such as Entomology or Plant Pathology, where B.Sc. Sericulture is also an eligible qualification.
Ques. Where exactly is the M.Sc. Sericulture programme conducted? Is it at the main TNAU campus in Coimbatore?
Ans. The M.Sc. (Ag.) in Sericulture is exclusively offered at the Department of Sericulture, Forest College and Research Institute (FC&RI), Mettupalayam - 641 301, which is approximately 40 km from Coimbatore city. FC&RI is a constituent college of TNAU situated in the sylvan surroundings of Jakanari Reserved Forest. It is NOT offered at the main TNAU campus in Coimbatore. Students should be prepared to relocate to Mettupalayam for the duration of the programme. Limited hostel facilities are available at the campus, though accommodation is not guaranteed and is subject to availability.
Ques. How many seats are available for M.Sc. Sericulture at TNAU, and what is the competition like?
Ans. The M.Sc. (Ag.) in Sericulture at TNAU has a very small intake, typically around 5-10 seats per year (exact sanctioned strength may vary). Of these, 30% of seats are reserved for candidates admitted through ICAR AIEEA (PG) quota, while the remaining 70% are filled through the TNAU Common PG Entrance Examination. Additionally, up to 20% of the sanctioned strength may be filled as supernumerary seats under self-financing mode. Given the niche nature of the programme and the limited number of B.Sc. Sericulture graduates in the country, competition is moderate but the pool of eligible candidates is also small. Candidates with a strong academic record in B.Sc. Sericulture and a good score in the TNAU entrance exam have a reasonable chance of securing admission.
Ques. What are the career opportunities after completing M.Sc. Sericulture from TNAU?
Ans. Graduates of M.Sc. (Ag.) in Sericulture from TNAU have secured positions in various sectors. In the government sector, common roles include Assistant Inspector of Sericulture and Assistant Director of Sericulture in state sericulture departments (Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, etc.), as well as Scientist positions at ICAR-Central Silk Board and CSRTI (Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute). In the private sector, opportunities exist in the silk textile industry, cosmetics companies using silk proteins, biomedical firms, and food industries. Graduates can also pursue Ph.D. in Sericulture at TNAU (offered at FC&RI, Mettupalayam) or other SAUs, and subsequently enter academia or research. The course also equips students with entrepreneurial skills for starting sericulture-based enterprises.
Ques. Can I apply for both TNAU entrance exam and ICAR AIEEA (PG) simultaneously for M.Sc. Sericulture?
Ans. Yes, candidates can apply for both the TNAU Common PG Entrance Examination and ICAR AIEEA (PG) simultaneously. These are two separate admission routes. The TNAU entrance exam fills 70% of the sanctioned seats, while ICAR AIEEA (PG) fills 30% of seats. Applying through both routes increases your chances of securing admission. However, note that ICAR AIEEA (PG) requires candidates to have a 4-year bachelor's degree (10+2+4 pattern); those with a 3-year B.Sc. are not eligible for the ICAR quota. If selected through ICAR, you must participate in ICAR online counselling and get a seat allotment letter before completing the TNAU admission process.
Ques. Is the ICAR PG Scholarship automatically awarded to all students admitted through ICAR quota, and can TNAU state quota students also get financial support?
Ans. The ICAR PG Scholarship (Rs. 12,640/month + Rs. 6,000/year contingency) is awarded to candidates admitted through the ICAR AIEEA (PG) quota, but it is not automatic - students must submit the fellowship award letter, monthly attendance, and report cards to the Dean (SPGS) office each semester. Students admitted through the TNAU state quota are not eligible for ICAR PG Scholarship, but they can avail the TNAU Merit Scholarship (Rs. 3,000/month for Tamil Nadu state students, awarded on merit basis), as well as state government scholarships for BC/MBC/SC/ST categories. It is important to note that students cannot simultaneously avail two scholarships/fellowships as per university rules.
