Ques. Is TNAU's M.Sc. in Nano Science and Technology the same as a regular M.Sc. in Nanotechnology offered by science colleges?
Ans. No, TNAU's M.Sc. (Ag.) in Nano Science and Technology is distinctly different from a conventional M.Sc. in Nanotechnology. While regular nanotechnology programmes focus on physics, chemistry, and materials science, TNAU's programme is specifically designed with an agricultural orientation. The curriculum covers agricultural nanotechnology (nano-fertilizers, nano-pesticides, nano-sensors for crop monitoring), environmental nanotechnology (nano-remediation of soil and water), and food nanotechnology (nano-encapsulation, food safety). This makes it one of the very few programmes of its kind among the 77 State Agricultural Universities in India, and graduates are well-positioned for research roles in agricultural R&D institutions, ICAR institutes, and agri-biotech companies.
Ques. Can students from non-agricultural backgrounds (e.g., B.Sc. Chemistry, B.Sc. Physics) apply for this programme?
Ans. No. TNAU strictly requires that applicants must have completed a 4-year undergraduate degree from a State Agricultural University (SAU), ICAR Institute, Central Agricultural University, or Government-aided Agricultural College. Candidates with B.Sc. Chemistry, B.Sc. Physics, or B.Sc. Nanotechnology from regular science colleges are not eligible. Only farm science degrees such as B.Sc. (Ag.), B.Tech. (Biotech.), B.Tech. (Bioinformatics), B.Tech. (Food Technology), B.Sc. (Hort.), B.Sc. (Forestry), etc., from the specified institutions are accepted. This is a key eligibility condition that many applicants overlook.
Ques. What is the difference between the regular (government) mode and the self-financing (SF) mode of admission?
Ans. TNAU offers up to 20% of seats in each programme under the self-financing (SF) mode, which is open to both Tamil Nadu and other state candidates. SF mode students pay an additional Rs. 25,000 per semester (Rs. 1,00,000 extra over 2 years) on top of the regular fee structure. The academic curriculum, faculty, and facilities are identical for both modes. The key difference is that SF mode students are not eligible for TNAU Merit Scholarship, though they may still apply for government scholarships if otherwise eligible. SF mode seats are filled based on merit from the same entrance examination.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for M.Sc. students at TNAU?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at TNAU is not guaranteed and is subject to availability. The university has separate hostels for male and female students with facilities like Wi-Fi, reading rooms, TV halls, and mess. However, given the limited hostel capacity relative to the student strength, not all students may get accommodation, especially in the first year. Students who do not get hostel accommodation typically arrange for private PG accommodations near the campus in Coimbatore. The hostel infrastructure charge of Rs. 1,815 per semester is applicable only to students who are allotted hostel rooms. Mess charges (food) are approximately Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 5,000 per month and are paid separately.

Ans. The TNAU PG Entrance Examination is a 100-mark objective (MCQ) test conducted in physical mode at TNAU Coimbatore. For Nano Science and Technology, 75 marks are from the subject (covering nanomaterial synthesis, characterization, agricultural applications, environmental nanotechnology, and food nanotechnology), 15 marks from General Agriculture, and 10 marks from Aptitude. The number of seats is limited (typically around 10-15 seats in the government quota), making it competitive.
