TNAU M.Sc Fruit Science FAQs
Ques. Can students from states other than Tamil Nadu apply for M.Sc. Fruit Science at TNAU?
Ans. Yes, students from other states can apply for M.Sc. Fruit Science at TNAU. However, TNAU follows Tamil Nadu Government reservation norms, and not more than 40% of candidates from any one state can be admitted in a particular subject and category. Other state candidates can also apply through the ICAR AIEEA (PG) route, which fills 30% of seats. It is important to note that candidates must have studied in a State Agricultural University, ICAR Institute, Central Agricultural University, or Government-Aided Agricultural College to be eligible. Private college graduates should verify ICAR accreditation of their institution before applying, as non-ICAR-accredited college graduates may face issues with eligibility.
Ques. Is it possible to do both UG and PG from TNAU itself? Has this rule changed recently?
Ans. Yes, as per a recent guideline change applicable from 2023, students can now pursue all three degrees (UG, PG, and PhD) from the same university. Previously, ICAR guidelines did not permit a student to complete UG, PG, and PhD from the same university. This change is a significant relief for TNAU graduates who wish to continue their postgraduate studies at TNAU itself without having to move to another agricultural university.
Ques. What is the difference between TNAU's own entrance exam and the ICAR AIEEA (PG) route for M.Sc. Fruit Science admission?
Ans. TNAU conducts its own Common PG Entrance Examination (physical/OMR mode) for 70% of seats. This exam is held at TNAU Coimbatore and consists of 100 marks covering the respective subject (75 marks), General Agriculture (15 marks), and Aptitude (10 marks). The ICAR AIEEA (PG), conducted by NTA, fills the remaining 30% of seats and also awards the prestigious ICAR PG Scholarship (Rs. 12,640/month). Students who qualify ICAR AIEEA (PG) and get allotted to TNAU through ICAR counselling are admitted separately and do not need to appear for TNAU's own entrance exam. The ICAR route is more competitive but comes with the added benefit of a monthly fellowship.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for M.Sc. Fruit Science students at TNAU?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at TNAU is limited and is not guaranteed as a matter of right upon admission. The university provides accommodation to the extent possible, and students cannot claim hostel accommodation automatically. There are separate hostels for boys and girls on the main campus at Coimbatore, as well as at the HC&RI Periyakulam campus. Students are advised to apply for hostel accommodation early after receiving their admission offer. The hostel infrastructure charge of Rs. 1,815 per semester is included in the regular fee structure for all students, but actual room and mess charges are separate and payable only by hostel residents.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing M.Sc. Fruit Science from TNAU?
Ans. Graduates of M.Sc. Fruit Science from TNAU have diverse career opportunities. They can pursue PhD programmes at TNAU or other agricultural universities through ICAR AICE-JRF/SRF (PhD) examination. Government job opportunities include positions as Horticulture Officers in state agriculture/horticulture departments, scientists at ICAR institutes, and faculty positions at agricultural colleges. In the private sector, graduates find roles in agri-input companies, fruit processing industries, export houses, and agri-startups. Many alumni also pursue entrepreneurship in fruit nursery production, orchard management, and post-harvest technology. The TNAU brand and ICAR accreditation significantly enhance employability across India.
Ques. What is the self-financing (supernumerary) quota in M.Sc. Fruit Science at TNAU, and how does it work?
Ans. Up to 20% of the sanctioned strength in M.Sc. Fruit Science is available as supernumerary seats under the self-financing mode, open to both Tamil Nadu and other state candidates based on merit. These seats are filled after the regular merit list is exhausted. Students admitted under this quota pay an additional Rs. 25,000 per semester (Rs. 1,00,000 for the full 2-year programme) over and above the regular fee structure. The academic programme, faculty, and facilities are identical to regular seats. This quota provides an additional opportunity for meritorious candidates who may not secure a seat in the regular quota due to reservation or competition.
