TNAU M.Sc Forest Products FAQs

Ques. Is the M.Sc. (Forestry) in Forest Products and Utilization at TNAU offered at the main Coimbatore campus or at a different location?

Ans. This programme is offered exclusively at the Forest College and Research Institute (FC&RI), Mettupalayam, which is a constituent college of TNAU located approximately 40 km north of Coimbatore, near the foothills of the Nilgiris. FC&RI is situated within the Jakanari Reserved Forest, providing students with direct access to forest ecosystems for field-based learning and research. Students admitted to this programme will study and reside at the Mettupalayam campus, not the main TNAU Coimbatore campus. The campus has separate hostel facilities for boys and girls with a combined capacity of 500 students.

Ques. Can a B.Sc. Agriculture graduate apply for M.Sc. (Forestry) in Forest Products and Utilization at TNAU?

Ans. No. As per both TNAU and ICAR eligibility norms, only candidates holding a B.Sc. (Forestry) or B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry degree of 4 years duration are eligible to apply for this programme. B.Sc. Agriculture graduates are not eligible for this specific specialisation. This is because the programme requires foundational knowledge of forest science, dendrology, and silviculture that is covered in the B.Sc. Forestry curriculum. Candidates with B.Sc. Agriculture degrees may explore other M.Sc. programmes at TNAU such as Environmental Science, Agronomy, or Soil Science for which they are eligible.

Ques. What is the difference between the TNAU entrance exam route and the ICAR AIEEA (PG) route for admission?

Ans. TNAU conducts its own PG Entrance Examination for 70% of the seats (State quota), which is a physical mode test held at TNAU Coimbatore. The remaining 30% of seats are filled through the ICAR AIEEA (PG) national entrance exam conducted by NTA, followed by centralised online counselling by ICAR. The key advantage of the ICAR route is that meritorious candidates are eligible for the ICAR PG Scholarship of Rs. 12,640/month, which is not available through the TNAU direct route. Both routes lead to the same degree and the same campus (FC&RI, Mettupalayam). Candidates can apply through both routes simultaneously to maximise their chances of admission.

Ques. What are the career prospects after completing M.Sc. (Forestry) in Forest Products and Utilization from TNAU?

Ans. Graduates of this programme are well-positioned for careers in multiple sectors. In the government sector, they can appear for Forest Range Officer and Assistant Conservator of Forest exams conducted by state PSCs and UPSC. In the private sector, opportunities exist in wood-based industries, plywood and panel board manufacturing, paper and pulp companies, furniture design firms, and essential oil and resin extraction industries. Research and academic careers are available at ICAR institutes, state forest research institutes, and universities. Graduates can also pursue Ph.D. in Forestry at TNAU (Mettupalayam campus) or other agricultural universities. The growing focus on sustainable forest management and non-timber forest products (NTFPs) has increased demand for specialists in this field.

Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for students admitted to M.Sc. (Forestry) at FC&RI, Mettupalayam?

Ans. Hostel accommodation is available at FC&RI, Mettupalayam, with separate hostels for boys (capacity: 200) and girls (capacity: 300). However, the university does not guarantee hostel accommodation as a matter of right. As per the TNAU PG Admission Brochure, the university will provide accommodation to the extent possible, and students cannot claim it automatically upon admission. Students admitted through ICAR quota are given preference for hostel accommodation as per ICAR guidelines, particularly female candidates. Students are advised to contact the FC&RI administration well in advance of joining to confirm hostel availability. Hostel mess charges are separate from the academic fee structure and are paid directly to the hostel mess committee.

Ques. What is the ICAR PG Scholarship amount and how is it different from the NTS (PG) scholarship?

Ans. The ICAR PG Scholarship (formerly known as JRF) is awarded to meritorious candidates admitted through ICAR AIEEA (PG) and provides Rs. 12,640 per month along with a contingency grant of Rs. 6,000 per year for books, chemicals, and research-related travel. This scholarship is awarded for a maximum of 2 years and is available only to a limited number of top-ranked candidates in each subject group. The National Talent Scholarship (NTS-PG), on the other hand, is available to non-PG Scholarship candidates who join a Master's programme in a state different from their domicile state, and provides Rs. 5,000 per month for 2 years. Both scholarships are disbursed only after completion of the ICAR online counselling and admission process. Candidates who have already received the ICAR PG Scholarship in a previous year are not eligible to receive it again even if they re-appear and qualify in merit.
