IMU Ph.D. FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between Full Time and Part Time Ph.D. at IMU, and who should opt for which mode?
Ans. The Full Time Ph.D. at IMU requires scholars to be physically present at the campus and dedicate themselves entirely to research. It has a minimum duration of 3 years and a maximum of 6 years. The Part Time mode is designed for working professionals, including seafarers and shore-based maritime industry employees, who wish to pursue doctoral research alongside their careers. Part Time Ph.D. has a minimum duration of 4 years and a maximum of 6 years. The annual fee for Part Time is higher (Rs. 60,000 per year for the first 4 years) compared to Full Time (Rs. 30,000 per year for the first 3 years). Full Time scholars are also eligible for IMU University Fellowships (Rs. 31,000-35,000 per month), which are not available for Part Time scholars. Fresh graduates and those seeking an academic or research career should opt for Full Time, while working professionals should consider Part Time.
Ques. Are UGC-NET or GATE qualified candidates exempted from the IMU Ph.D. written entrance test?
Ans. Yes, candidates who have qualified UGC-NET (both JRF and Lectureship categories), CSIR-NET (both JRF and Lectureship categories), GATE, CEED, or CAT are fully exempted from the IMU Ph.D. written entrance test. Their selection is based entirely on the Interview/Viva-Voce, which carries 100% weightage. However, it is important to note that the validity of the qualifying certificate must be within the stipulated period; expired certificates are not accepted. This exemption makes it significantly easier for NET/GATE qualified candidates to secure admission to the IMU Ph.D. programme.
Ques. Can a serving seafarer pursue a Part Time Ph.D. at IMU, and what documents are required?
Ans. Yes, actively serving seafarers are specifically accommodated in the Part Time Ph.D. programme at IMU. Seafarers holding a Master or MEO Class I Certificate of Competency are eligible to apply. A key advantage for seafarers is that they are exempted from submitting a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer, which is otherwise mandatory for shore-based part-time candidates. Seafarers must submit proof of active seagoing service, specifically a copy of their Certificate of Competency (COC) and Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC) showing at least six months of sailing prior to the last date of admission. This makes IMU's Ph.D. programme particularly attractive for experienced maritime professionals who wish to contribute to research in their field.
Ques. What are the research areas available for Ph.D. at IMU Chennai, and how does one find a supervisor?
Ans. IMU offers research across a wide range of maritime-related areas including Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, Naval Architecture and Ship Building, Dredging and Harbour Engineering, Port and Shipping Management, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Maritime Security and Piracy, Maritime Law and Insurance, Blue Economy, Autonomous Shipping, Cyber Security for Seaports, Seafarer Mental Health, and Green Technology including tidal and renewable energy. To find a supervisor, candidates can refer to the List of Empaneled Guides published on the IMU admissions page (available for download from the official website). It is advisable to contact potential supervisors before applying to discuss research interests and availability. The doctoral committee at IMU assigns supervisors based on research area alignment and faculty availability.
Ques. What is the IMU University Fellowship, and how competitive is it to get one?
Ans. The IMU University Fellowship is a financial support scheme offered by Indian Maritime University to full-time Ph.D. scholars. IMU offers only 6 fellowships per year across all its campuses and all research areas, making it highly competitive. Fellows receive Rs. 31,000 per month as Junior Research Fellow (JRF) for the first two years, and Rs. 35,000 per month as Senior Research Fellow (SRF) from the third to fifth year. The fellowship tenure is 5 years. Selection for the fellowship is based on merit in the entrance test and interview. Given the limited number of fellowships, candidates are strongly advised to also apply for external fellowships such as UGC-JRF, CSIR-JRF, or project-based fellowships from national research institutions.
Ques. When is the IMU Ph.D. admission notification typically released, and what is the programme commencement date?
Ans. Based on the 2026-27 admission cycle, the IMU Ph.D. admission notification was released in November 2026, with online registration open from 23rd November to 20th December 2026. The written entrance test was held in January 2027 (20th and 31st January), interviews were conducted in February 2027, and the programme commenced on 1st March 2027.
