KU Ph.D. (Philosophy) FAQs
Ques. Can I pursue Ph.D. in Philosophy at Kerala University if my Master's degree is in a subject other than Philosophy, such as Political Science or Sociology?
Ans. Kerala University generally requires the Master's degree to be in the discipline concerned or a closely related field for PhD registration. For Philosophy specifically, the Doctoral Committee evaluates the candidate's academic background and research proposal during the interview. While the university's regulations allow for interdisciplinary research, candidates with a Master's in a different subject may face scrutiny during the interview stage. It is advisable to contact the Department of Philosophy directly or check the vacancy list on the research portal to understand if supervisors are available for interdisciplinary research areas.
Ques. Is it possible to do a Ph.D. in Philosophy at Kerala University while working a full-time job?
Ans. Yes, Kerala University offers a part-time PhD mode specifically for employed candidates. However, you must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your employer stating that you are permitted to pursue studies part-time, will be relieved for course work if required, and that your official duties allow sufficient time for research. Importantly, part-time scholars are not eligible for any fellowship or scholarship. Also, employed candidates cannot register for full-time research unless they obtain Leave Without Allowance (LWA) from their employer.
Ques. How many seats are available in the Philosophy department and how competitive is the admission process?
Ans. As per the July 2025 session vacancy list published on the Kerala University Research Portal, there are 18 vacancies in the Philosophy department. These vacancies are distributed across multiple supervisors, and each supervisor can guide a maximum of 4 (Assistant Professor), 6 (Associate Professor), or 8 (Professor) scholars at a time. The competition depends on the number of applicants per session. Candidates with UGC-NET/JRF are given preference and are directly called for interview, while others must clear the entrance test (70% weightage) and interview (30% weightage).
Ques. What is the minimum and maximum duration of the Ph.D. programme at Kerala University, and what happens if I cannot submit my thesis on time?
Ans. The minimum duration for a full-time PhD at Kerala University is 3 years and the maximum is 6 years from the date of registration. If a scholar fails to submit the thesis within the stipulated period, they can apply for re-registration. The re-registration fee for full-time scholars is Rs. 1,320. Additionally, delayed thesis submission attracts a fine: no fine for up to 6 months delay, Rs. 1,000 fine for 6 months to 1 year, Rs. 2,000 for 1-2 years, Rs. 5,000 for 2-5 years, and Rs. 2,000 per year for delays beyond 5 years.
Ques. Is UGC-NET mandatory for Ph.D. admission at Kerala University, or can I appear for the university's own entrance test?
Ans. UGC-NET is not mandatory. Kerala University conducts its own PhD Entrance Test for candidates who do not hold UGC-NET/JRF, CSIR-NET, GATE, SLET, DST-INSPIRE, or equivalent qualifications. Candidates who clear the university entrance test are selected based on 70% weightage to the entrance test score and 30% to the interview. However, holding a UGC-NET qualification (even Category 3 - PhD admission only) exempts you from the entrance test and you are directly called for interview. Teachers with 7 or more years of regular teaching experience at university/government/aided colleges are also exempted from the entrance test.
Ques. What research areas are available in the Philosophy department at Kerala University, and how do I find a suitable supervisor?
Ans. The Department of Philosophy at Kerala University covers a wide range of research areas including Indian Philosophy, Western Philosophy, Ethics, Logic, Philosophy of Religion, Philosophy of Mind, Social and Political Philosophy, and Environmental Philosophy. To find a suitable supervisor, candidates should visit the Kerala University Research Portal (research.keralauniversity.ac.in), check the vacancy list for the current session, and review the research profiles of available supervisors. It is strongly recommended to contact potential supervisors before applying to discuss your research proposal and confirm their availability, as supervisor allocation is done by the Doctoral Committee based on research interest alignment and current scholar count.
