KU Ph.D. (LIS) FAQs
Ques. Is it mandatory to appear for the Kerala University PhD Entrance Test, or can I apply directly with my UGC-NET score?
Ans. Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET (in any of the three categories - JRF, Assistant Professor, or PhD admission only), CSIR-NET/JRF, GATE, SLET, DST-INSPIRE, KSCSTE, or hold a Teacher Fellowship are exempt from the university-level entrance test. However, it is important to note that your UGC-NET certificate must be valid and not expired at the time of application. If your NET certificate has expired, you will need to requalify or appear for the university entrance test. Candidates with M.Phil degrees seeking registration in a different discipline than their M.Phil specialisation are also required to appear for the entrance test.
Ques. How competitive is it to get a Research Supervisor at Kerala University for Library & Information Science?
Ans. This is one of the most commonly raised concerns by prospective PhD scholars at Kerala University. The number of vacancies with approved Research Supervisors is limited, and seats are allocated strictly based on availability. Each Professor can guide a maximum of 8 scholars, Associate Professor up to 6, and Assistant Professor up to 4 at any given time. It is strongly recommended to check the vacancy list published on the Research Portal (research.keralauniversity.ac.in under 'Other Info') before applying, as admission is not permitted in subjects where no vacancies are reported. Candidates are also advised to identify potential supervisors and their research areas in advance.
Ques. Can I pursue the PhD in Library & Information Science on a Part Time basis while continuing my job?
Ans. Yes, Kerala University allows Part Time PhD registration for employed candidates, subject to availability of permissible vacancies. You will need to submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your employer clearly stating that you are permitted to pursue studies on a part time basis, will be relieved for course work if required, and that your official duties permit sufficient time for research. However, Part Time scholars are not eligible for any fellowship or scholarship. Also note that employed candidates cannot pursue Full Time research unless they obtain Leave Without Allowance (LWA) from their employer.
Ques. What is the mandatory course work requirement for PhD scholars at Kerala University?
Ans. All PhD scholars, irrespective of Full Time or Part Time mode, must complete a mandatory course work of a minimum of one semester (6 months) with 14 credits within the first year of registration. The course work includes two papers: Paper I on Research Methodology (candidates with M.Phil degrees that included Research Methodology in their curriculum are exempted from this paper) and Paper II on Research and Publication Ethics (compulsory for all scholars without exception). Ethical Committee Clearance is also mandatory for research involving human subjects.
Ques. What are the research areas available in Library & Information Science at Kerala University?
Ans. The Department of Library and Information Science at Kerala University supports research across a wide range of contemporary and traditional areas including Digital Library Architecture and Management, Information Retrieval and Big Data Analytics, Knowledge Organisation and Semantic Web, Library Automation and Management Systems, Preservation and Conservation of Digital Media, Information Policy and Intellectual Property, User Behaviour and Service Design in Libraries, Open Access and Scholarly Communication, and Information Literacy. The specific research areas available in a given session depend on the specialisation of the approved Research Supervisors who have vacancies; candidates should check the vacancy list and supervisor profiles on the Research Portal before finalising their research proposal.
Ques. What happens if I miss the application deadline for a particular PhD session at Kerala University?
Ans. Kerala University conducts PhD admissions twice a year - January session and July session. If you miss the deadline for one session, you will need to wait for the next session. The university has clearly stated that the last date for submission of applications is a statutory date and will not be extended under any circumstances. Candidates who faced technical difficulties during online submission are advised to contact researchhelp@keralauniversity.ac.in well before the deadline. Additionally, UGC-JRF/DST-INSPIRE/KSCSTE awardees who were permitted to join provisionally after the previous session's deadline must mandatorily apply in the current session without fail, as per the January 2026 notification.
