KU Ph.D. (History) FAQs
Ques. What makes the Department of History at Kerala University distinctive for PhD research?
Ans. The Department of History at Kerala University is one of the oldest and most reputed history departments in South India. It publishes the Journal of Indian History, one of India's oldest peer-reviewed history journals, which reflects the department's strong research culture. The department has faculty specialising in ancient, medieval, modern, colonial, and Kerala history, with a particular strength in archival and primary source-based research. The proximity to the Kerala State Archives and the Oriental Research Institute and Manuscripts Library in Thiruvananthapuram provides PhD scholars with exceptional access to rare primary sources.
Ques. Is the PhD History entrance exam at Kerala University subject-specific, or is it a general aptitude test?
Ans. The Kerala University PhD Entrance Examination is a General Aptitude Test consisting of two parts: Part A covers Research Methodology (50 marks) and Part B covers the chosen subject - in this case, History (50 marks). The test is of 3 hours duration and is descriptive in nature. Candidates must secure a minimum of 50% marks each in both Part A and Part B to be eligible for the interview. A relaxation of 10% is given to SC/ST candidates and 5% to OBC/differently-abled/EWS candidates in the entrance examination.
Ques. What is the difference between full-time and part-time PhD in History at Kerala University, and can I switch between the two modes?
Ans. Full-time PhD scholars are required to be present at the research centre on all working days and are eligible for fellowships and scholarships. Part-time scholars must be employed and submit a No Objection Certificate from their employer; they are not eligible for any fellowship. The minimum duration for full-time research is 3 years and for part-time it is 4 years. Conversion from full-time to part-time is permitted only after completing the mandatory 6-month course work period and only upon getting permanent employment; however, conversion is generally allowed after a minimum of 3 years of valid research period. A conversion fee of Rs. 1,320 is applicable.
Ques. What is the course work requirement for PhD History at Kerala University, and is there any exemption?
Ans. All PhD scholars, irrespective of full-time or part-time mode, must complete a mandatory course work of minimum one semester (6 months) with 14 credits within the first year of registration. The course work consists of two papers: Paper I (Research Methodology) and Paper II (Research and Publication Ethics). Candidates who hold an M.Phil. degree with Research Methodology in their curriculum are exempted from Paper I. Paper II (Research and Publication Ethics) is compulsory for all scholars without exception.
Ques. With 67 vacancies in History, does that mean admission is easy at Kerala University?
Ans. The 67 vacancies in History for the January 2026 session represent the total number of slots available across all approved supervisors in the Department of History and affiliated research centres. However, the actual number of candidates who can be admitted depends on the number of supervisors available and their individual capacity limits (a Professor can guide up to 8 scholars, Associate Professor up to 6, and Assistant Professor up to 4). The high vacancy count reflects the large number of approved research centres and supervisors in History across affiliated colleges in Kerala. Competition can still be significant, especially for specific research areas or supervisors.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing PhD History from Kerala University?
Ans. A PhD in History from Kerala University opens doors to academic careers as Assistant Professor in colleges and universities (UGC-NET qualification is typically required alongside the PhD for teaching positions). Graduates also find opportunities in archival research, heritage management, museum curation, civil services (UPSC/KPSC), journalism, and policy research. The ICSSR and KCHR regularly fund post-doctoral fellowships for History PhD holders. Many alumni of the department have gone on to hold faculty positions in universities across Kerala and other states, and some have contributed to significant historical research on Kerala's colonial and social history.
