KU Ph.D. (Engg & Tech) FAQs
Ques. How many sessions does Kerala University conduct for Ph.D. admissions in Engineering and Technology?
Ans. Kerala University conducts Ph.D. admissions twice a year - in January and July sessions. Each session begins with a notification on the University Research Portal (research.keralauniversity.ac.in), followed by online applications, entrance examination (for those not exempted), and interviews by the Doctoral Committee. Candidates with valid GATE/NET/JRF qualifications can apply in any session and are directly called for an interview without appearing for the entrance test.
Ques. Is GATE score mandatory for Ph.D. admission in Engineering at Kerala University?
Ans. GATE is not mandatory, but it is one of the qualifications that exempts a candidate from the University Ph.D. Entrance Test. Candidates without GATE/NET/JRF must appear for and qualify the University-conducted Ph.D. Entrance Examination. However, having a valid GATE score significantly strengthens the application and may also make the candidate eligible for GATE-based fellowships during the research period.
Ques. Can I pursue Ph.D. in Engineering at Kerala University while working full-time?
Ans. Yes, Kerala University allows part-time Ph.D. registration for employed candidates. However, the candidate must submit a No Objection Certificate from their employer stating that they are permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis, will be relieved for course work if required, and their official duties permit sufficient time for research. Part-time scholars are not eligible for any University fellowship or scholarship. Employed candidates cannot register for full-time research unless they obtain Leave Without Allowance.
Ques. What is the minimum duration to complete a Ph.D. in Engineering at Kerala University?
Ans. The minimum duration for a full-time Ph.D. at Kerala University is 3 years from the date of registration, which includes the mandatory course work period of at least 6 months (one semester). Part-time scholars have a minimum duration of 4 years. The maximum duration is typically 6 years for full-time and 8 years for part-time scholars, with extensions possible on payment of additional fees.
Ques. How are Research Supervisors allocated for Ph.D. in Engineering at Kerala University?
Ans. The allocation of Research Supervisors is done by the Department Doctoral Committee, taking into account the number of scholars already under each supervisor, the supervisor's area of specialization, and the research interests of the scholar as indicated at the time of interview. Candidates cannot directly choose their supervisor; the Doctoral Committee makes the final allocation. Vacancies with each supervisor can be checked on the Research Portal before applying.
Ques. Are there any fellowships available specifically for Ph.D. scholars in Engineering at Kerala University?
Ans. Yes, several fellowships are available. UGC-JRF and CSIR-JRF provide Rs. 37,000 per month for the first two years and Rs. 42,000 per month from the third year onwards for full-time scholars. DST-INSPIRE fellows receive Rs. 31,000 per month plus Rs. 20,000 annual contingency. GATE-qualified scholars may be eligible for GATE scholarships at AICTE-approved institutions. The University of Kerala also notifies its own research fellowships periodically. Part-time scholars are not eligible for any of these fellowships.
