KU Ph.D. (Commerce) FAQs
Ques. Is it mandatory to clear the Kerala University Ph.D. Entrance Test to get admission to the Ph.D. in Commerce programme?
Ans. No, it is not mandatory for all candidates. If you have qualified UGC-NET (any category - JRF, Assistant Professor eligibility, or Ph.D. admission only), CSIR-NET/JRF, GATE, SLET (Kerala), DST-INSPIRE, or similar fellowships recognised by the University, you are exempted from the University's own Ph.D. Entrance Test. In such cases, you are directly called for an interview by the Doctoral Committee of the Commerce Department. However, if you do not hold any of these qualifications, you must appear for and clear the University's Ph.D. Entrance Examination (General Aptitude Test) to be eligible for registration.
Ques. How difficult is it to get a supervisor (guide) for Ph.D. in Commerce at Kerala University?
Ans. This is one of the most common concerns raised by aspirants. Supervisor vacancies at Kerala University are limited because each faculty member can guide only a fixed number of scholars (Professor: max 8, Associate Professor: max 6, Assistant Professor: max 4). In practice, many supervisors already have their quota filled, which means even if you clear the entrance test or hold a NET/JRF, you may not get a supervisor immediately. It is strongly advisable to check the vacancy list on the Research Portal (research.keralauniversity.ac.in under 'Other Info') before applying, and to identify potential supervisors in advance based on your research interest.
Ques. Can I pursue Ph.D. in Commerce at Kerala University while working full-time in a job?
Ans. Yes, Kerala University offers Part-Time Ph.D. registration for employed candidates. To apply for part-time mode, you must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your employer clearly stating that you are permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis and will be relieved for course work if required. However, part-time scholars are not eligible for any fellowship or scholarship. Also, employed candidates cannot opt for full-time research unless they obtain Leave Without Allowance (LWA) from their employer. Conversion from full-time to part-time is permitted only after completing a minimum of 3 years of valid research period.
Ques. What is the course work requirement for Ph.D. in Commerce at Kerala University, and can it be waived?
Ans. All Ph.D. scholars, whether full-time or part-time, must complete mandatory course work of 14 credits within the first year of registration. The course work spans a minimum of one semester (6 months) and includes Paper-I (Research Methodology) and Paper-II (Research and Publication Ethics). Paper-I can be waived for candidates who have completed an M.Phil degree with a Research Methodology course in the curriculum, provided the M.Phil is recognised by Kerala University. However, Paper-II (Research and Publication Ethics) is compulsory for all scholars registered from January 2021 onwards and cannot be waived under any circumstances.
Ques. How many sessions does Kerala University conduct for Ph.D. registration in Commerce, and when should I apply?
Ans. Kerala University conducts Ph.D. registrations twice a year - the January Session and the July Session. Notifications are typically issued in December (for January session) and June-July (for July session). The application window is usually open for about 2-3 weeks and the deadline is strictly enforced - it is not extended under any circumstances. Candidates who qualify NET/JRF or similar fellowships after the deadline of one session must mandatorily apply in the next session. It is important to monitor the official Research Portal (research.keralauniversity.ac.in) regularly as notifications are published there first.
Ques. What research areas are available under Ph.D. in Commerce at Kerala University, and how is the research topic finalised?
Ans. The Department of Commerce at Kerala University covers a wide range of research areas including financial management, accounting, marketing management, human resource management, international business, entrepreneurship, consumer behaviour, and banking and finance. The research topic is not pre-assigned; instead, you indicate your research interest at the time of application. The Doctoral Committee, after reviewing your synopsis presentation and interview, finalises the topic in consultation with the allocated supervisor. It is advisable to prepare a preliminary research proposal or synopsis before appearing for the Doctoral Committee presentation, as this significantly strengthens your case for supervisor allocation.
