KU Ph.D. (Biotechnology) FAQs
Ques. Is DBT-JRF accepted for Ph.D. Biotechnology admission at Kerala University, and does it exempt me from the entrance test?
Ans. Yes, DBT-JRF (Department of Biotechnology Junior Research Fellowship) is specifically accepted for Ph.D. registration in Biotechnology at Kerala University. DBT-JRF awardees are fully exempt from the Kerala University Ph.D. Entrance Examination and can apply directly during the registration window (January or July session). This is a specific provision for Biotechnology - the official notification explicitly states that "Candidates awarded with DBT/JRF are permitted to register for research leading to Ph.D. degree in Biotechnology." You still need to appear for an interview before the Doctoral Committee for final selection.
Ques. How many seats are available for Ph.D. Biotechnology at Kerala University, and what are the research areas?
Ans. As per the official vacancy list for the January 2026 session, there were 15 vacancies available in Biotechnology - one of the higher vacancy counts among science subjects at Kerala University. Research areas in the Department of Biotechnology include plant tissue culture, in vitro secondary metabolite production, medicinal plant conservation, microbial enzymes, therapeutic compounds and proteins, molecular biology, and biodiversity conservation. The number of seats varies each session depending on the availability of approved Research Supervisors and their current scholar load.
Ques. Can I pursue Ph.D. Biotechnology at Kerala University while working in a biotech company in part-time mode?
Ans. Yes, Kerala University allows part-time Ph.D. registration for employed candidates including those working in biotech companies. You must submit a No Objection Certificate from your employer stating that you are permitted to pursue studies part-time, will be relieved for course work if required, and your official duties allow sufficient time for research. However, part-time scholars are NOT eligible for any fellowship or scholarship. Also, note that Scientists working in approved research laboratories of Central/State Government with 7 years of experience as Grade Scientists and two published research papers are exempt from the entrance test entirely.
Ques. What is the difference between applying in the January session vs. the July session for Ph.D. Biotechnology at Kerala University?
Ans. Both sessions follow the same admission process and eligibility criteria. The key practical difference is in vacancy availability - the number of seats may vary between sessions depending on how many supervisors have capacity. The January 2026 session had 15 vacancies in Biotechnology. For the July session, a separate vacancy list is published. If you miss the January session deadline, you can apply in the July session. The Ph.D. Entrance Examination is typically conducted once a year (in October/November), and its results are valid for both the subsequent January and July sessions.
Ques. What course work is required for Ph.D. Biotechnology at Kerala University, and how is it evaluated?
Ans. Course work is mandatory for all Ph.D. scholars at Kerala University, irrespective of full-time or part-time mode. Scholars must complete a minimum of one semester (6 months) of course work with 14 credits within the first year of registration. The course work includes Paper I - Research Methodology (candidates with M.Phil. having Research Methodology in their curriculum are exempted) and Paper II - Research and Publication Ethics (compulsory for all scholars). Scholars must score at least 50% in each paper of the course work examination to proceed with their research. Ethical Committee Clearance is mandatory for research work involving human subjects.
Ques. How does the Research Supervisor allocation work for Ph.D. Biotechnology, and can I contact potential supervisors before applying?
Ans. The formal allocation of Research Supervisors is done by the Department Doctoral Committee after your selection, based on the current number of scholars under each supervisor, the specialization areas of available supervisors, and your stated research interests at the time of interview. While you cannot officially choose your supervisor, it is strongly advisable to identify potential supervisors and their research areas before applying - the list of approved research guides is available on the Research Portal under "List of Research Guides." Contacting potential supervisors informally before applying is a common practice and can help you align your research proposal with available expertise. Supervisors with less than 3 years of service remaining before superannuation are not eligible to take new scholars.
