KU Ph.D. Biochemistry FAQs
Ques. Is the Kerala University Ph.D. Entrance Exam mandatory for Biochemistry, or can I apply directly with CSIR-NET/UGC-NET?
Ans. Candidates who have qualified CSIR-UGC NET/JRF, UGC-NET (all three categories including Category 3 - PhD admission only), GATE, KSCSTE, DST-INSPIRE, SLET, or similar national/state fellowships are fully exempt from the Kerala University Ph.D. Entrance Examination. They can apply directly during the Ph.D. registration window (January or July session) through the Research Portal. However, they still need to appear for an interview before the Doctoral Committee for final selection. Only candidates without any of these qualifications need to appear for the university entrance test.
Ques. How many seats are available for Ph.D. Biochemistry at Kerala University, and how competitive is the admission?
Ans. As per the official vacancy list for the January 2026 session, there were 7 vacancies available in Biochemistry. The number of seats varies each session depending on the availability of approved Research Supervisors and their current scholar load (a Professor can guide up to 8 scholars, Associate Professor up to 6, and Assistant Professor up to 4 at any given time). Given the limited seats and the strong research reputation of the department, competition is moderate to high, especially for candidates without fellowship exemptions.
Ques. Can I pursue Ph.D. Biochemistry at Kerala University in part-time mode while working?
Ans. Yes, Kerala University allows part-time Ph.D. registration for employed candidates. However, you must submit a No Objection Certificate from your employer stating that you are permitted to pursue studies part-time, will be relieved for course work if required, and your official duties allow sufficient time for research. Importantly, part-time scholars are NOT eligible for any fellowship or scholarship. Also, conversion from full-time to part-time is only permitted after completing a minimum of 3 years of valid research period (or after 6 months of course work if you get regular employment during full-time research).
Ques. What is the course work requirement for Ph.D. Biochemistry at Kerala University, and is it mandatory?
Ans. Course work is mandatory for all Ph.D. scholars at Kerala University, irrespective of full-time or part-time mode. Scholars must complete a minimum of one semester (6 months) of course work with 14 credits within the first year of registration. The course work includes two papers: Paper I - Research Methodology (candidates with M.Phil. having Research Methodology in their curriculum are exempted from this paper) and Paper II - Research and Publication Ethics (compulsory for all scholars registered from January 2021 onwards). Scholars must score at least 50% in the course work examination to proceed with their research.
Ques. What fellowships are available for Ph.D. Biochemistry students at Kerala University, and how do I avail them?
Ans. Full-time Ph.D. scholars at Kerala University can avail fellowships from CSIR (Rs. 37,000/month JRF), UGC (Rs. 37,000/month JRF), KSCSTE (Rs. 31,000/month JRF for first 2 years, Rs. 35,000/month SRF in 3rd year), and DST-INSPIRE (Rs. 31,000/month). To avail these, you must first obtain your Ph.D. registration order from the university, then submit the required documents (registration order, fellowship certificate, joining report, work progress report, and bank details) to the University Research Section. The university then forwards the acceptance to the respective funding agency for release of fellowship amounts. Note that part-time scholars are not eligible for any fellowship.
Ques. How does the Research Supervisor allocation work for Ph.D. Biochemistry at Kerala University?
Ans. The allocation of Research Supervisors is done by the Department Doctoral Committee after your selection, based on three factors: the current number of scholars under each supervisor (including co-supervision), the specialization areas of available supervisors, and your stated research interests at the time of interview. You cannot directly choose your supervisor; the committee decides based on availability and fit. It is advisable to identify potential supervisors and their research areas before applying (the list of approved research guides is available on the Research Portal under 'List of Research Guides') and mention your preferred research area clearly in your application and interview. Supervisors with less than 3 years of service remaining before superannuation are not eligible to take new scholars.
