KU MVA FAQs
Ques. Is the MVA (History of Art) programme offered at the main Kariavattom campus of Kerala University or at a different location?
Ans. The MVA (History of Art) programme is NOT offered at the main Kariavattom campus in Thiruvananthapuram. It is exclusively offered at the Raja Ravi Varma Centre of Excellence for Visual Arts, Mavelikara, which is located in Alappuzha district, approximately 100 km from Thiruvananthapuram. Students should plan their accommodation and travel accordingly, as the centre is a separate campus. The centre is named after the legendary painter Raja Ravi Varma and is a prestigious institution for visual arts in Kerala.
Ques. What is the difference between MVA (History of Art) and MVA (Painting) at Kerala University?
Ans. The MVA (History of Art) focuses on the academic and critical study of art - covering art history, aesthetics, iconography, museum studies, and visual culture - and is suited for students interested in research, teaching, curation, and art criticism. The MVA (Painting), on the other hand, is a studio-based programme focused on practical skills in painting, artistic expression, and creative practice. Both are 2-year full-time programmes offered at the same centre in Mavelikara, but they cater to different career paths.
Ques. What career options are available after completing MVA (History of Art) from Kerala University?
Ans. Graduates of MVA (History of Art) can pursue careers as art historians, art critics, museum curators, gallery managers, heritage conservation officers, and art educators. They can also work with cultural organizations, government bodies like the Archaeological Survey of India, and NGOs involved in heritage preservation. Many graduates also pursue doctoral research (Ph.D.) in art history or related disciplines. The programme's affiliation with Kerala University, which has a strong research culture, provides a good foundation for academic careers.
Ques. Is there a separate entrance exam for MVA admission, or is it the same CSS PG entrance exam?
Ans. The MVA (History of Art) admission at Kerala University follows the CSS PG admission process, which involves a university-conducted entrance examination (100 MCQs, 2 hours), along with an interview and consideration of qualifying examination marks. The entrance exam is conducted at multiple centres across Kerala (Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Kannur). There is no separate national-level exam required for this programme.
Ques. Can students from non-arts backgrounds apply for MVA (History of Art)?
Ans. Yes, the eligibility for MVA (History of Art) at Kerala University requires only a Bachelor's Degree from a recognized university - there is no restriction on the discipline of the undergraduate degree. Students from humanities, social sciences, or even science backgrounds can apply, provided they meet the minimum marks requirement (50% or equivalent CGPA). However, students with a background in fine arts, history, or humanities may have an advantage in the entrance examination, which tests subject knowledge at the qualifying examination level.
Ques. What is the fee structure and are there any hidden charges for MVA (History of Art)?
Ans. The total fees for the MVA (History of Art) programme are very affordable, approximately Rs. 5,410 for the entire 2-year course. This includes tuition fees of Rs. 840 per semester (Rs. 3,360 total for 4 semesters) and one-time fees collected at admission (admission fee, library fee, union fees, etc.). There is also a non-refundable online registration fee of Rs. 1,500 (General) or Rs. 750 (SC/ST). A caution deposit is payable separately and is refundable at the end of the programme. SC/ST and OEC students are fully exempt from fee payment at the time of admission.
