KU M.Sc Biotechnology FAQs
Ques. Is the M.Sc. Biotechnology at Kerala University a DBT-supported programme, and is GAT-B required for admission?
Ans. No, the M.Sc. Biotechnology at Kerala University (University of Kerala, Kariavattom) is NOT a DBT-supported programme. Admission is entirely through the Kerala University CSS PG Entrance Examination conducted by the university itself. GAT-B scores are not required or accepted for this programme. Students who wish to apply to DBT-supported M.Sc. Biotechnology programmes at other institutions can appear for GAT-B separately, but it has no bearing on Kerala University admissions.
Ques. What is the actual competition level for the 14 seats in M.Sc. Biotechnology at Kerala University?
Ans. With only 14 sanctioned seats (further divided into merit and reservation categories), the programme is extremely competitive. Typically, hundreds of candidates appear for the entrance examination for these limited seats. Of the 14 seats, 50% (7 seats) are open merit, 20% (approximately 3 seats) are for SEBC, 15% (approximately 2 seats) for SC, and 5% (1 seat) for ST, with 10% for EWS. Students from outside Kerala can apply under the non-Keralite supernumerary seat (1 additional seat).
Ques. Can students from B.Sc. Biotechnology (Multimajor) programmes apply for M.Sc. Biotechnology at Kerala University?
Ans. Yes. Candidates who have completed B.Sc. Biotechnology (Multimajor) are eligible to apply. As per the Academic Council decision, marks obtained in Biotechnology as the main subject are considered for eligibility. Students from dual/triple major programmes with Biotechnology as a core course are also eligible. The entrance examination rank determines final admission.
Ques. What research opportunities are available for M.Sc. Biotechnology students at Kerala University?
Ans. The Department of Biotechnology at Kerala University has active research in areas including Cancer Therapeutics, Marine Bioproducts, Molecular Diagnostics, PharmaBiologics, and Functional Foods. Students also have access to the Inter-University Centre for Genomics and Gene Technology (IUCGGT) on the Kariavattom campus.
