KU MA (Music) FAQs

Ques. Is the MA Music programme at Kerala University focused on Carnatic music only, or does it cover Hindustani music as well?

Ans. The Department of Music at Kerala University primarily focuses on Carnatic classical music, which is the dominant tradition in Kerala. However, the curriculum also includes elements of Indian musicology, music theory, and comparative study of different Indian classical traditions. Students interested in Hindustani music may find the theoretical components useful, but the practical training and performance focus is largely on Carnatic music. Prospective students with a Hindustani background should confirm the specific specialization options available with the department before applying.

Ques. With only 10 seats available, how competitive is the MA Music entrance exam at Kerala University?

Ans. The MA Music programme at Kerala University is indeed highly competitive given the limited intake of just 10 seats. The entrance examination consists of 100 MCQs covering subject knowledge at the graduation level, and the rank list is prepared based on percentile scores. Typically, students with strong theoretical knowledge of Carnatic music, music history, and ragas/talas perform well. It is advisable to thoroughly revise the BA Music syllabus of Kerala University and practice previous years' question papers. The 50% reservation policy also applies, so candidates from reserved categories have a better chance of securing admission.

Ques. Can students from other universities or states apply for MA Music at Kerala University?

Ans. Yes, students from other universities and states can apply for MA Music at Kerala University. However, candidates who have completed their qualifying examination from universities other than Kerala University must produce an Eligibility/Equivalency Certificate from the University of Kerala at the time of admission. This certificate confirms that their qualifying degree is recognized for admission to the relevant PG programme. It is advisable to apply for this certificate well in advance to avoid delays during the admission process.

Ques. What career options are available after completing MA Music from Kerala University?

Ans. Graduates of MA Music from Kerala University can pursue a wide range of careers. They can become music teachers or lecturers in schools, colleges, and music academies. Many graduates go on to pursue M.Phil. or Ph.D. in Music from Kerala University itself or other institutions, leading to academic and research careers. Performance-based careers as concert artists, accompanists, or music directors in the film and television industry are also popular. Additionally, graduates can work as music therapists, cultural programme coordinators, or in government cultural departments. The university's strong alumni network in Kerala's cultural ecosystem is a significant advantage.

Ques. Is there any practical/performance component in the MA Music entrance exam, or is it entirely written?

Ans. The CSS PG Entrance Examination for MA Music at Kerala University is entirely written, consisting of 100 Multiple Choice Questions for 100 marks to be completed in 2 hours. There is no separate practical or audition component in the entrance examination. However, the programme itself has a significant practical component once admitted, where students are evaluated on their performance skills throughout the course. Candidates should note that the written exam tests theoretical knowledge of music, including ragas, talas, compositions, music history, and musicology.

Ques. What is the last date to apply for MA Music 2026-27, and where can I apply?

Ans. The last date to submit the online application for MA Music 2026-27 at Kerala University is 30 April 2026.
