Ques. Is it mandatory to have studied Malayalam as a main subject in graduation to apply for MA Malayalam at Kerala University?
Ans. It is not mandatory to have Malayalam as the main subject in graduation. However, candidates must have studied at least 4 Malayalam Language courses at the undergraduate level. This means students who had Malayalam as a language paper (Part II or complementary) in their BA/B.Sc./B.Com. programmes are also eligible, provided they have completed 4 such courses. Students who have not studied Malayalam at all at the undergraduate level are not eligible for this programme.
Ques. What is the syllabus for the CSS PG Entrance Examination for MA Malayalam?
Ans. The entrance examination for MA Malayalam consists of 100 MCQs covering subject knowledge at the qualifying (undergraduate) examination level, along with logical and numerical reasoning. The questions are based on topics typically covered in BA Malayalam programmes, including classical and modern Malayalam literature, grammar, literary criticism, folklore, and the history of Malayalam language. The exam is of 2 hours duration with negative marking of 0.25 marks per wrong answer. Candidates are advised to refer to the official CSS syllabus available on the university admissions portal.

Ans. MA Malayalam graduates from Kerala University have diverse career options. The most common career path is teaching Malayalam at school and college levels, for which UGC-NET qualification is required. Other options include journalism and media (Malayalam newspapers, TV channels, and digital media), translation and interpretation, content writing, publishing, and government jobs where Malayalam proficiency is required. Many graduates also pursue doctoral research in Malayalam literature, linguistics, and cultural studies. Kerala PSC also recruits Malayalam language teachers and officers through competitive examinations.

Ans. UGC-NET in Malayalam (Paper Code 14) is moderately competitive. Qualified candidates are eligible for Assistant Professor positions in Malayalam departments in colleges and universities across India, particularly in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and other states with significant Malayalam-speaking populations. JRF-qualified candidates receive a monthly fellowship of Rs. 37,000 (for the first two years) for doctoral research. Given the large number of Malayalam-medium schools and colleges in Kerala, there is consistent demand for qualified Malayalam teachers and lecturers.
Ques. Does Kerala University's MA Malayalam programme have a specialization in any particular area of Malayalam literature?
Ans. The MA Malayalam programme at Kerala University covers a broad range of topics including classical Sangam literature, medieval Malayalam literature, modern Malayalam fiction, poetry and drama, literary theory and criticism, folklore, and the history of Malayalam language. While there is no formal specialization track, students can focus their dissertation and research on areas of their interest. The department has faculty with expertise in various areas including classical literature, modern fiction, feminist literary criticism, and Dalit literature in Malayalam.
Ques. Can students from Tamil Nadu or other states who have studied Malayalam apply for MA Malayalam at Kerala University?
Ans. Yes, students from Tamil Nadu and other states who have studied at least 4 Malayalam Language courses at the undergraduate level are eligible to apply. One supernumerary seat is reserved for a non-Keralite candidate from the rank list. However, all other seats are filled based on the rank list with reservations applicable only to Keralite candidates. Non-Keralite candidates must provide an Equivalency/Eligibility Certificate if their qualifying degree is from a university outside Kerala. Students from Tamil Nadu who have studied Malayalam as a language subject in their BA programmes are commonly found in this programme.
