KU MAHRM FAQs
Ques. Is the MAHRM at Kerala University offered at the main Kariavattom campus or only at affiliated colleges?
Ans. The MA in Human Resource Management under Kerala University is primarily offered through affiliated colleges, with Loyola College of Social Sciences, Thiruvananthapuram being the main recognised centre. It is not offered as a direct teaching department programme at the Kariavattom campus. Students admitted through the CSS system are allotted to affiliated colleges based on their rank and preference. So if you are specifically looking for a campus-based experience at Kariavattom, this programme may not be the right fit.
Ques. What is the difference between MAHRM and MBA (HR) at Kerala University? Which is better?
Ans. The MAHRM is a 2-year MA programme focused exclusively on Human Resource Management, offered through affiliated colleges at a very low fee (around Rs. 6,210 total). The MBA at IMK (Institute of Management in Kerala) is a broader management programme with HR as a specialisation, requires KMAT/CAT scores, and has significantly higher fees. MAHRM is ideal for students who want a specialised HR qualification at minimal cost, while MBA is better for those seeking a broader management education with stronger placement infrastructure. Career outcomes differ too - MAHRM graduates typically enter HR roles in mid-sized organisations or pursue further studies, while MBA graduates have access to campus placements at IMK.
Ques. Is the entrance exam for MAHRM the same as KMAT Kerala?
Ans. No. The MAHRM entrance examination is conducted by the University of Kerala as part of its CSS (Centralised Seat Selection) system. It is a separate university-level entrance test, not KMAT Kerala. KMAT Kerala scores are required for MBA admissions at IMK and affiliated management colleges. For MAHRM, you only need to register through the Kerala University admissions portal and appear for the CSS entrance exam scheduled between May 18-24, 2026.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing MAHRM from Kerala University?
Ans. Graduates of the MAHRM programme can pursue careers as HR executives, recruitment specialists, training and development officers, labour relations officers, and HR consultants in corporate, government, and NGO sectors. Many graduates also appear for Kerala PSC and UPSC exams for administrative and HR-related government positions. Some students pursue further studies such as MBA, LLB (Labour Law), or PhD in Management. Given the low fees and the university's reputation, the programme offers good value for money, especially for students targeting Kerala-based organisations and government jobs.
Ques. How competitive is the MAHRM entrance exam at Kerala University? What is the typical seat intake?
Ans. The MAHRM programme has a limited seat intake - historically around 20 seats per affiliated college (as per Kerala University Syndicate records). The entrance exam is moderately competitive, with questions typically covering general management concepts, HR fundamentals, English comprehension, and logical reasoning. Since the programme is offered only at select affiliated colleges in Thiruvananthapuram, competition can be significant among local applicants. Candidates with a strong academic background in social sciences, commerce, or management tend to perform well.
Ques. Can students from outside Kerala apply for MAHRM at Kerala University?
Ans. Yes, students from outside Kerala can apply for the MAHRM programme. However, they must produce an Eligibility Certificate from the University of Kerala at the time of admission, confirming that their qualifying degree is equivalent to a Kerala University degree. The minimum eligibility is a Bachelor's degree with 50% marks in aggregate. There is no domicile restriction for admission, but since the programme is offered in Thiruvananthapuram, students should be prepared for relocation. Hostel facilities are available for female students.
