KU B.Tech ME FAQs
Ques. Is B.Tech Mechanical Engineering at Kerala University offered at the main university campus or at affiliated colleges?
Ans. The B.Tech Mechanical Engineering program under Kerala University is primarily offered at the University College of Engineering, Kariavattom (UCK), which is a constituent college located on the Kariavattom campus of the University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. UCK is a government-aided institution and is one of the few engineering colleges directly under the University of Kerala. The curriculum and examinations are governed by APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU), to which UCK is affiliated for engineering programs. Students attend regular on-campus classes, labs, and workshops at the Kariavattom campus.
Ques. What is the difference between Merit seats and Management seats in terms of fees and admission process?
Ans. Merit seats (also called Government Cost-Sharing seats) are allotted through the KEAM centralized counselling by CEE based on KEAM rank and category. The tuition fee for Merit seats is Rs. 36,750 per year. Management seats are also allotted through KEAM counselling but at a higher fee of Rs. 68,250 per year. The key difference is that Merit seat holders may be eligible for government fee concessions and scholarships, while Management quota students are generally not eligible for such concessions. Both categories follow the same academic curriculum and examinations.
Ques. Is KEAM the only entrance exam accepted for B.Tech Mechanical Engineering at Kerala University (UCK)?
Ans. Yes, for regular (Merit and Management quota) admissions to B.Tech programs at UCK, KEAM is the mandatory entrance examination conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE), Kerala. There is no provision to use JEE Main or any other national-level exam score for admission to government or government-aided engineering colleges in Kerala under the KEAM process. However, for NRI quota seats at UCK, no entrance test is required; admission is based on qualifying examination marks (45% aggregate in Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry).
Ques. What is the placement scenario for B.Tech Mechanical Engineering graduates from UCK Kariavattom?
Ans. UCK Kariavattom has a placement cell, but as a government-aided university constituent college, the placement activity is not as structured as in private engineering colleges. Students have reported that the placement cell is not very active, and most mechanical engineering graduates either pursue higher studies (M.Tech/GATE), government jobs (PSUs via GATE), or seek placements independently. The starting salary for placed students has been reported around 3.5 LPA. Students aiming for core mechanical engineering roles or PSU jobs are advised to prepare for GATE alongside their B.Tech program, as GATE scores open doors to M.Tech admissions and PSU recruitment.
Ques. Can students from outside Kerala apply for B.Tech Mechanical Engineering at Kerala University through KEAM?
Ans. Yes, students from outside Kerala can apply under the Non-Keralite Category I (NK I) or Non-Keralite Category II (NK II) categories. NK I candidates (children of defence/government employees posted in Kerala, or those who have studied in Kerala for a specified period) are considered against State Merit seats. NK II candidates (all others from outside Kerala) are eligible for admission to Government Cost-Sharing engineering colleges only after the second phase allotment, when Keralite and NK I candidates are not available. NK II candidates are also eligible for Management quota seats in private self-financing colleges. Neither NK I nor NK II candidates are eligible for communal/special reservations or fee concessions.
Ques. What are the hostel facilities available for B.Tech Mechanical Engineering students at UCK Kariavattom?
Ans. The University of Kerala campus at Kariavattom has hostel facilities. The hostel fee for female students is approximately Rs. 6,115 per year. Hostel accommodation is not mandatory and is subject to availability. Students are advised to apply for hostel accommodation early, as seats are limited. Male students may need to arrange private accommodation near the campus if hostel seats are unavailable. The Kariavattom campus is well-connected by public transport from Thiruvananthapuram city, making it feasible for day scholars as well.
