KU BHM FAQs

Ques. Is the BHM at Kerala University offered at the main university campus or at affiliated colleges?

Ans. The BHM programme under Kerala University is offered at affiliated catering and hotel management colleges across Kerala, not at the main university campus in Thiruvananthapuram. Colleges such as Sree Narayana Guru Memorial Catering College (Alappuzha), Lourdes Matha Institute of Hotel Management (Thiruvananthapuram), and others are affiliated to Kerala University and offer this programme. Students should check the specific college they are applying to, as infrastructure, faculty quality, and placement support can vary significantly between affiliated colleges.

Ques. What is the actual fee I will pay per semester for BHM at Kerala University-affiliated colleges?

Ans. The most commonly reported fee is Rs. 30,000 per semester, which amounts to Rs. 60,000 per year and Rs. 2,40,000 for the full 4-year course. This figure has been consistently reported by students across multiple affiliated colleges. However, private unaided affiliated colleges may charge higher fees. It is advisable to confirm the exact fee structure directly with the specific college at the time of admission, as fees can vary between government-aided and private affiliated institutions.

Ques. Is industrial training/internship mandatory in the BHM programme, and do students get paid during internships?

Ans. Yes, industrial training is a mandatory component of the BHM curriculum at Kerala University-affiliated colleges. Students typically undergo internships at reputed hotel chains such as Taj Hotels, CGH Earth, Marriott, and other premium properties. Many hotels offer a stipend during the training period, which can be particularly helpful for students from lower-income backgrounds. The internship duration and stipend amount vary by hotel and batch, but students have reported receiving stipends from leading properties.

Ques. What is the difference between BHM and BHMCT at Kerala University? Which should I apply for?

Ans. BHM (Bachelor of Hotel Management) and BHMCT (Bachelor of Hotel Management and Catering Technology) are both 4-year undergraduate programmes affiliated to Kerala University, but they differ in their curriculum emphasis. BHMCT has a stronger focus on catering technology and food production, while BHM has a broader hospitality management orientation. Both programmes use the same BHMCT Entrance Examination for admission. The choice depends on whether you want to specialise more in food production/catering (BHMCT) or broader hotel operations and management (BHM). Both have similar career prospects in the hospitality industry.

Ques. What are the career options after completing BHM from a Kerala University-affiliated college?

Ans. BHM graduates from Kerala University-affiliated colleges find employment primarily in the hospitality sector - in hotels, resorts, cruise lines, airlines, event management companies, and tourism firms. Entry-level roles include Front Office Executive, Food and Beverage Associate, Housekeeping Supervisor, and Guest Relations Officer. With Kerala being a major tourist destination, there are strong local opportunities in addition to national and international placements. The average starting salary ranges from Rs. 2.5 to 4 LPA, with premium hotel chains offering higher packages. Many graduates also pursue higher studies such as MBA in Hospitality Management or MHM.

Ques. Can I apply for BHM at Kerala University if I am from a Science or Commerce background in Class 12?

Ans. Yes, the BHM programme at Kerala University is open to students from all streams - Science, Commerce, and Arts. There is no stream restriction for eligibility. The minimum requirement is passing 10+2 or equivalent from a recognised board with at least 45% aggregate marks. This makes BHM a popular choice for students from non-science backgrounds who are interested in the hospitality industry. Students with a background in Home Science or Tourism may find the transition particularly smooth, but it is not a prerequisite.
