The Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) at Kerala University is a 3-year full-time undergraduate programme offered through affiliated colleges under the University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. The programme is designed to equip students with a strong foundation in computer science, programming, software development, database management, networking, and emerging technologies. Under the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) framework introduced by Kerala University, students can also opt for a 4-year Honours or Honours with Research degree. The total tuition fee for the programme at Government/Aided affiliated colleges is approximately Rs. 1.04 lakhs for 6 semesters (3 years), making it one of the most affordable BCA programmes in the country. Admission is merit-based, through the University's centralised online allotment process (FYUGP CSS), with no separate entrance examination required. The BCA is a popular choice among students seeking a career in IT, software development, and data analytics, and serves as a strong foundation for pursuing MCA, M.Sc. Computer Science, or MBA in IT.

As of April 2026, the FYUGP 2026-27 admission process is underway. The notification was released on 16 March 2026, and the last date for online application is 30 April 2026. Candidates are advised to apply promptly through the official admissions portal at admissions.keralauniversity.ac.in.

Kerala University: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 5 Reviews

Admission to this college is determined by a merit list from Kerala University, with applications submitted through the university's official website. The college boasts seven faculty members, including teachers for English and Maths, and a lab assistant, who are selected based on qualifications and interviews. Faculty members are known for their supportive nature, boosting student confidence and encouraging questions. The fee structure, set by Kerala University, includes a tuition fee of approximately 13,500 rupees per semester for non-SC/ST students, payable via SBI demand draft, while SC/ST students are exempt due to scholarships.

An additional examination fee of around 750 rupees is required per semester. Though the college lacks its own placement program, it facilitates internships and placements at nearby institutions, with technology-oriented companies offering placements from the 5th semester onwards. Two senior students recently secured IT positions with competitive salaries. Eligible students must have no backlogs and pass a three-stage recruitment process, with the highest average package being 35,000 rupees. Internships, leading to potential placements, require strong academic performance.

Projects, often conducted externally, involve creating apps or servers and assess students' skills. The government-operated college offers various scholarships, including the egrantz for OEC students and separate concessions for SC/ST students. Semester-wise fees include a tuition fee of 13,010 rupees and an exam fee of 730 rupees, alongside refundable initial charges like a caution deposit. Financial aid is available, though some stipends may be limited by caste criteria.

KU BCA FAQs

Ques. Is there an entrance exam for BCA admission at Kerala University affiliated colleges?

Ans. No, there is no separate entrance examination for BCA admission at Kerala University affiliated colleges. Admission is purely merit-based, calculated using index marks derived from the Higher Secondary (10+2) examination. The index mark is calculated as: Total marks in Higher Secondary + Highest marks scored in Computer Science / Computer Applications / Mathematics / Informatics Practices / Information Technology. Candidates are ranked based on these index marks, and allotment is done through the University's centralised online process. This makes the admission process straightforward for students who have performed well in their 10+2 examinations.

Ques. Can I pursue BCA at Kerala University if I studied Arts or Commerce stream in Class 12?

Ans. Yes, you can, provided you have studied Computer Science, Computer Applications, Mathematics, Informatics Practices (IP), or Information Technology as one of your optional subjects in Class 12, regardless of your stream (Science, Commerce, or Arts). The key requirement is that one of these subjects must be part of your Higher Secondary curriculum. If you have not studied any of these subjects, you may not be eligible for BCA admission under Kerala University's norms.

Ques. What is the difference between the 3-year BCA and the 4-year BCA (Honours) at Kerala University?

Ans. Under the FYUGP framework, students can exit after 3 years (6 semesters) with 133 credits and receive a Bachelor's degree (BCA). If they continue for a 4th year and complete 177 credits, they receive a Bachelor's (Honours) degree. Students who score 75% or above in all six semesters of the first three years are eligible for the Honours with Research pathway, which involves a research project in the 4th year. The 4-year Honours degree is generally considered more valuable for higher studies and competitive employment, as it aligns with the NEP 2020 framework.

Ques. What are the career options after completing BCA from a Kerala University affiliated college?

Ans. After completing BCA from a Kerala University affiliated college, students can pursue higher education such as MCA (Master of Computer Applications), M.Sc. Computer Science (for which BCA is an eligible qualification at Kerala University's own teaching departments), MBA in IT/Systems, or B.Ed. in Computer Science. Career options include software developer, web developer, database administrator, system analyst, IT support specialist, and data analyst roles in IT companies. Kerala's IT sector, particularly in Thiruvananthapuram's Technopark, offers significant employment opportunities for BCA graduates.

Ques. How does the centralised allotment process work for BCA at Kerala University?

Ans. The centralised allotment process (FYUGP CSS) is conducted online by Kerala University. After registering and submitting college/programme preferences, the University prepares a rank list based on index marks. Allotment is done in multiple rounds - candidates are allotted seats based on their rank, reservation category, and the preferences submitted. Candidates who receive an allotment must report to the allotted college within the stipulated time for document verification and fee payment. If a candidate does not report, the seat is forfeited. Subsequent allotment rounds are conducted to fill vacant seats. The entire process is transparent and merit-based.

Ques. Are there BCA seats available at Government colleges under Kerala University, and how competitive is the admission?

Ans. Yes, BCA is offered at Government, Aided, and Self-Financing colleges affiliated to Kerala University. Government and Aided colleges have limited seats (typically 30-40 per college) and are highly competitive due to lower fees and better infrastructure. Self-Financing colleges have more seats but charge higher fees. Competition is particularly intense for Government college seats in Thiruvananthapuram district. Students with strong marks in Mathematics or Computer Science in their 10+2 examination have a significant advantage. NCC/NSS/SPC/Scout & Guides certificate holders receive a weightage of 15 bonus marks, which can make a difference in competitive allotments.
