GGU Ph.D. Forestry FAQs
Ques. What is the research focus of the Ph.D. program in Forestry and Environmental Science?
Ans. The Ph.D. program in Forestry and Environmental Science focuses on advanced research in forest ecology, sustainable forest management, wildlife conservation, biodiversity assessment, climate change adaptation in forests, and environmental impact assessment. The program emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical applications relevant to India's forest conservation and environmental sustainability goals. Research scholars work under the guidance of experienced faculty members who are actively engaged in field-based research projects. The program encourages research in areas such as agroforestry, forest regeneration, wildlife habitat management, ecosystem services valuation, and carbon sequestration. Scholars are expected to contribute original research through their dissertation and publications in peer-reviewed journals. The program also provides opportunities for research collaborations with Forest Research Institute (FRI) Dehradun and other premier research institutions.
Ques. What field work and research opportunities are available during the Ph.D. program?
Ans. The Ph.D. program includes extensive field-based research opportunities with access to diverse forest ecosystems in Chhattisgarh and across India. Scholars conduct mandatory field visits to forest areas, wildlife sanctuaries, and environmental sites as part of their coursework and research. The university collaborates with Forest Research Institute (FRI) Dehradun to provide advanced field training and research internship opportunities. Scholars undertake practical training in forest inventory, biodiversity assessment, wildlife monitoring, and environmental impact assessment. The dissertation project involves original field research often conducted in real forest ecosystems. The department provides financial support through departmental funds for field visits and research activities. These field-based components ensure that scholars gain hands-on experience essential for professional forestry and environmental science work.
Ques. How does the program prepare scholars for careers in forest conservation and environmental management?
Ans. The Ph.D. program prepares scholars for diverse career opportunities in government forestry departments, environmental consulting firms, NGOs focused on conservation, research institutions, and international organizations. The curriculum combines rigorous coursework in research methodology, forest ecology, and environmental science with practical field training. Scholars develop expertise in forest management planning, biodiversity conservation, environmental impact assessment, and sustainable development. The program emphasizes both research skills and practical applications relevant to India's forest conservation challenges. Faculty members are actively engaged in industry and government-relevant research projects, providing scholars with exposure to real-world conservation issues. Scholars are encouraged to pursue competitive examinations like the Indian Forest Service (IFS) after completing their Ph.D. The alumni network and faculty connections often facilitate job placements and research opportunities in conservation organizations.
Ques. What is the pre-Ph.D. coursework and how long does it take?
Ans. All Ph.D. scholars, regardless of admission category, must complete pre-Ph.D. coursework for a minimum of one semester (six months). The coursework consists of three papers worth 12 credits total. The first paper is a compulsory course on research methodology, quantitative methods, computer applications, and research and publication ethics. The second and third papers are subject-specific courses in forestry and environmental science proposed by the Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Environmental Science. Scholars must obtain a minimum of 55% marks in coursework to continue in the program. If a scholar fails in the first attempt, they get one additional attempt after paying due fees. Successful completion of coursework is mandatory for all Ph.D. students before proceeding to research work. The coursework provides foundational knowledge and research skills essential for conducting original research in forestry and environmental science.
Ques. Can working professionals pursue Ph.D. on a part-time basis?
Ans. Yes, the Ph.D. program can be pursued on a part-time basis by working professionals. Such candidates must apply under the VRET-Exempted category and submit a No-Objection Certificate from their employer in the prescribed format. The NOC must clearly state that the candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis, that official duties permit sufficient time for research, and that the candidate will be relieved from duty if required to complete coursework. Part-time scholars must fulfill all conditions stipulated in the Ph.D. Regulations 2023. The duration of the program may be extended for part-time scholars as per university norms. However, all coursework requirements and research standards remain the same as for full-time scholars. Part-time scholars can also avail Non-NET fellowship after qualifying the VRET test conducted after admission.
Ques. What happens if a scholar fails to complete coursework or meet academic requirements?
Ans. If a Ph.D. scholar fails to qualify the pre-Ph.D. coursework examination in the first attempt, they are given one additional attempt to clear the examination after paying the required fees. However, if the scholar fails to pass the coursework examination in both attempts, their admission to the Ph.D. program will be automatically cancelled. Additionally, the residency period for scholars who fail in the first attempt is not extended in continuity; only one semester (six months) is reckoned for successful completion of coursework. Scholars must maintain a minimum of 55% marks in coursework to be eligible to continue in the program and proceed to research work. The university reserves the right to cancel admission at any point if it is found that minimum eligibility requirements are not fulfilled or if false documentation has been submitted. Scholars are expected to maintain academic integrity and adhere to the university's code of conduct throughout their Ph.D. program.
