Placement: It is not as good as the likes of IITB or IITD. Some good companies do not visit us especially in non tech roles

Placement were pretty good. If you have a good profile then you wont struggle to find a job. Though the number of recruiters and avg package is lower than that of other IITs, but still you can expect a 20 to 30lk job on Day 1 of Placement season with is at par with other IITs. Though the number if such recruiters is not massive but is good enough for almost everyone. The campus location in Guwahati with the city fairly developed with respect to other cities in India with remote facilities for recreation and opportunities for upskilling or internship and other opportunities is disappointing.

Students normally appear for placements in fourth year with two placement seasons namely from december to january and february to march. Companies include quant companies and tech giants like JPMC, Reliance Industries, WellsFargo,Piramal, Standard Chartered,Texas Instrumentation, walmart, Microsoft, Amazon, Deloitte,Oracle, HCL, Barclays, Tata steel, uber, legato, Mastercard, Nutanix, BPCL, BEL,PWC, Socgen, etc. Almost 80% students get placed every year with the average package ?1,60,000. The highest package was 1.68 crore per annum from the branch of Computer Science.

The Mechanical Department is one of the departments at IIT Guwahati that is actively involved in research, competitions (robotics, automobile development, etc.), academics, and so on. It is also one of the largest departments in terms of faculty, Ph.D. scholarships, and available equipment. Almost all of the professors are friendly and eager to assist students.

Placements in IIT Guwahati's mechanical engineering department are very good for B.tech students, with 87% of students placed in PSUs and core companies this year. One of my relatives has done his PhD from IIT Guwahati and he shared his experience of the same. PhD and placements don’t go hand in hand as the goal of most PhD students is to research work and not get employed. IITs and IISc especially have very few job opportunities for Ph.D. students. Very few students around 3-4 from every department complete their Ph.D. every year.

My uncle told me he had 3 offers before submission. In IIT, it usually takes 4–6 months to get thesis review after submission, and an additional month for final defense. A few students get PostDoc and even job offers from foreign universities and companies.

All in all, it takes 5-7 years to get a Ph.D. degree but mostly the placements are satisfactory. My uncle too has become an assistant professor at IIT Guwahati.

The placement scenario of only a few IITs is considered good. Some of these include IIT Delhi, Kanpur, Bombay, Kgp, and Madras.

Although these IITs witness intense competition in placements, the fact that some tech giants only visit these IITs makes their placement scenario better than other IITs. A few of the top companies include Google, Apple, Uber, Facebook, etc. Many consulting giants such as Mckinsey, BCG, Bain, AT Kearney, etc. offer roles in finance, software, banking, investment banking, etc. These roles are offered in plenty around 30-60 at these IITs. Other companies do visit other IITs and the salary offered is also similar.

Some major recruiters included Larsen & Toubro, Schlumberger, Piramal, TVS R&D, GAIL, etc.

Specifically talking about Chemical engineering, the average package of a chemical graduate from IIT Guwahati is around INR 15 LPA.

The average salary and median salary as well as the number of students placed were the highest for the B.Tech & B.Des students. The placement percentage was also the highest for the B.Tech & B.Des batch.

Both the private and public sector companies are expected to recruit more candidates.

Why do so few companies from Consulting, Banks and FMCGs visit campus for placements and internships in IIT-Guwahati?

Very few positions for UG students are opened by top consulting firms like McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, and Bain and Company. Most of these openings are filled by the crème students of top IITs like IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi. These companies have long-standing associations with these institutes and trust their credibility better than other IITs. They don’t feel the need to expand their non-openings to other IITs as they aren’t sure of the quality of students there.

Also, companies tend to hire high rankers which are in plenty at these top IITs. IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee, and IIT KGP rarely have exceptionally high rankers like IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay.

As far as banks and companies that hire for Quant Analyst positions are concerned, the MnC program is slowly attracting good offers. Recently even Goldman Sachs visited and other companies like WorldQuant, and Deutsche Bank are expected to follow.

The active Alumni Cell of IIT Guwahati has been helping form good relationships between companies and the institutes because of which many companies have started visiting because of our alumni working in them.
